Review

"Reading Acquaintance is like discovering the journal of a long-lost relative. Filled with period detail, Carl's fictional memoir is a love story I devoutly wish were true."--Linda Anne Hoag, marriage and family therapist"Fiction makes the reality of the 1920s far more vivid than a historical text ever could. Eugenicists in Oregon were calling for sterilization of perverts along with other undesirables, and the Ku Klux Klan had infiltrated every level of the community, secretly ready to strike against anything that didn't seem 100% normal and American. It wasn't an auspicious time for two young Portland men to fall in love with each other."--Robin Will, president of the Gay & Lesbian Archive of the Pacific Northwest

The first book of Jeff Stookey’s trilogy, Medicine for the Blues, introduces Dr. Carl Holman, a World War I army surgeon who returns to practice medicine in Portland in the 1920s. The story unfolds as an intimate memoir, written in an unknown year, that focuses on Holman’s love affair with jazz musician Jimmy Harper. The reader is compelled forward from chapter to chapter from first moment Carl spots the handsome piano player and begins to court him. Stookey’s fluid writing creates memorable portraits and a study in contrasts. Carl Holman is a gay man in his thirties who experienced the sexual freedom and radical ideas circulating in Germany after the First World War. He wants to find a lover and companion to share his life. Stookey's writing captures the nuanced play of Holman's desire for Jimmy against his anxiety about public exposure and its consequences. The younger man, Jimmy Harper, is at a more formative stage in life. Having finished his musical education in college, he is a product of the Jazz Age, still very impressionable, less sure of himself and eager to experience the world. Carl Holman’s story is the struggle to live as a ‘whole man’ in an unforgiving milieu and time when elites in the Pacific Northwest were jumping on the bandwagon of homophobia, sterilization, religious bigotry and white nationalism. Parallels with the divisiveness and hatred of Trump-Pence politics in America today remind us that even supposedly respectable white men like Carl Holman still must fight for the human right to express their wholly natural desires. The fairies and switch-hitters, well-heeled lesbians and Chinese man servant who also people Stookey's book are as skillfully-drawn and memorable as the two main characters. I can't wait for Volume 2.

Fiction is one of the best ways to really view an historical time period and make it come alive. We think of flappers and bathtub gin when the 1920's are mentioned, but few today are aware of the extreme xenophobia of the period. Having the protagonists be homosexual adds to the layers of understanding. We see the roots of our current issues.I particularly enjoyed the wholesomeness of the protagonists. Too often, gay people are pathetic disasters who have such endlessly tragic lives. Can't wait for the next volumes!

Loved reading about a time in history I knew nothing about. It was eye-opening.

The story is engaging, the writing flows. Can't wait to read the next two books!

I just finished “Acquaintance”. I loved it.Dr. Carl Holman is a likable protagonist, navigating a hazardous journey to self knowledge and love. Professional integrity and reserve balance the sometimes humorous missteps he makes trying to be himself, a caring, meticulous gay man, in a repressive culture. He can’t hide his sensibility even though it’s seen as a threat to the conservative community. It’s hard to imagine the difficulties of gay life in the 20’s; here we see the guile required for camouflage, and the joy of freeing oneself, even while survival depends on remaining hidden.Music is an emotional language that bridges the distance between Carl, the rational thinker, and Jimmy the artist. Jimmy interprets life through his understanding of music. Carl is a surgeon who’s seen too much, he can’t help but view life quite viscerally, through contemplating the body and its functions. Despite devastating emotional damage from the war, his heart is still alive and responsive. I’ve read few depictions of gay men that emphasize the bonds between them as Acquaintance does, or conjure up the ordinary sweetness of gay intimacy. It’s great to watch Jimmy remove the moral strictures of his upbringing, one by one in his own time. But as their relationship develops, the growing threat of the Ku Klux Klan puts pressure on Dr. Holman personally and professionally. How is he going to get out of this bind? I was surprised to learn of the Klan’s historical influence in Oregon, and that racial intolerance was only one aspect of their agenda. No, if you were not Protestant, heterosexual, and white, if you were Irish or Italian or asian, you were not welcome in their upstanding “pure” society. This novel examines the spread of the KKK’s violent political coercion far beyond the South. Carl begins to see, with a growing sense of dread, that his neighbors, and key members of his professional network, are aligned with the Klan, and all are watching him.I’ve been telling the story of Acquaintance to a friend, and found it’s great in a serialized form, stopping at the cliff-hanging moments that so rack Dr. Holman’s nerves. Thanks, Jeff Stookey! We are looking forward to Book 2.

The writing in this book is stunning! I am a big fan of First Person point of view, and Jeff Stookey has proven he knows what he is doing. Scenery, settings, dialog and action are handled flawlessly. The characters, major and minor, all breath and live in their world. Jeff has really done his homework, I believe he has captured the milieu of 1920s Portland and other local communities in a realistic manner. The reading experience is so much richer for his hard work.If you are a fan of music, romance, period politics or historical fiction then you will love this book.I give Acquaintance a score of 4.9 stars, the score would have been higher except for the handful of spelling errors.

Having read much of history over a lifetime, I find Frye's offering a refreshing change. His thoughts and writing style force you think differently while enjoying every minute of it thanks to his writing skills. I hope to see more of his work being published.

David Frye’s book, Walls, offers a dispassionate account of societies’ motivations for building walls, and the impact walls have had on the civilizations that built them. Throughout the book, the reader may begins to extrapolate how walls shaped societies’ developmental outcomes, including the knowledge, beliefs and practices of those within them. The book is a fascinating and easy read, and provides a unique prospective on the history of human civilization as described through some of the most influential man-made barriers. I very much enjoyed it

I loved this book; I use it for research and intellectual stimulation to reflect on civilization; where we are now, where we were back at the dawn of this whole mess we call civilization and culture.

I enjoyed this original approach to history. The rigorously researched book is filled with interesting and not widely known anecdotes about the wall builders and their counterparts. It left me thinking about the correlation between building walls and building civilizations. It is also interesting to think about the ways in which our reasons for needing walls have changed.

Frye uses great story telling and thorough research to present ideas about the rise of modern society that makes us consider the way we view ourselves and our past. Not just a history about walls but about the people they divide throughout time.

Learned a lot. Highly recommended.

In Walls: A History of Civilization in Blood and Brick, David Frye takes an interestingly oblique look at history through the impact of, well, walls, dividing up the world into two population segments: those who live behind them (for protection) and those who live outside of them (the cause of needing protection). At times he perhaps takes a little license in terms of overstating or simplifying, but it is all mostly fascinating, informative, and engaging.Wall construction goes back to nearly the earliest of post-nomadic days, connected to the rise of agriculture and then of cities as populations were able to support themselves in one place for the first time. Walls rose step by step with civilization and in fact Frye makes the case that they helped create and form said civilization. First and most obviously by protecting the city inhabitants from the “barbarians outside the gates.” But less obviously he points to how walls allowed for greater security, which allowed for less need to have every person (usually men) able to function as a warrior, which allowed them to therefore specialize in skills beyond fighting so they could become smiths, poets, bakers, etc. Fortified cities became fortified regions became fortified empires and grand civilizations. And then even more nuanced is the way the walls “softened” those who hid behind them, forcing the inhabitants to hire “real” fighters from outside their walls (often from amidst those damn barbarians), leading to a cycle of empires rising and falling: as they rise they need security so they build walls, then they lose fighting skills so have to outsource soldiers, then those soldiers turn on them, the empire falls, rinse and repeat.Frye takes us through a host of such cities/empires, including China (one can’t very well have a book about walls and not include the Great Wall, now can one?), Greece, Ancient near east, Eurasia, Rome, Byzantium, Great Britain, Russia, Mesoamerica. Frye moves not just in space but time as well, bringing us walls from four thousand years ago to the Maginot Line (Frye uses a loose definition of “wall” in places) in World War II to the Berlin Wall to contemporary times. While “build that wall” has clearly entered our vocabulary lately, making a book about walls and their impact quite timely, readers may be surprised at just how much wall-building has been done around the world the last ten or twenty years. It’s truly shocking and Frye does an excellent job covering this modern day return to wall building efficiently and effectively. It’s a return because with the advent of heavy-duty cannon, walls lost their ability to protect, a transition made vividly clear in Frye’s chapter on the Turks’ siege and eventual conquering of Constantinople. The impact of walls construction and failures on world history, on which regions rose and fell in power, on the psychology of an entire people as well as the psychology of smaller groups is nicely conveyed throughout in often insightful and always engaging fashion (Frye is a smooth stylist and paces the book smartly). My only issue with the book is that his insights are so often so sharp, and so often so intriguing, that I wish he had broadened his definition or his focus even more with regard to modern day walls. We move through the massive construction around the world so fast that I would have liked to slow down a little to more deeply consider the causes and potential impact. As well, I would have liked to have seen him look at smaller-scale walls, the ones we see more and more of in modern-day life around “high interest targets” such as airports, chemical plants, the White House, etc. Or prison walls, in a time period when controversy wages over the inequality of the current justice system and how we “wall off” our poor and our minorities--the “barbarians at the gates of our homes (to be fair, he does deal briefly with gated communities). And even metaphorical walls—the bubbles we can put up thanks to modern technology and social media. Granted, that would have made for a much longer book, but Frye proved himself to be a good enough writer that I would have happily followed him for another one or two hundred pages on the topic. That said, asking for more is hardly a major criticism, so it should come as no surprise that I highly recommend walls for a different but important take on history and society.

The subject of walls is all the rage nowadays. With the balkanization and increased nationalism of the world…there is no more apt physical representation of it than an actual wall. But the idea isn’t new. Walls have been around since the early days of civilization, in fact an argument made in this book is that walls are very much responsible for civilization as we know it. Frye’s perspective on the matter is fairy binary and best represented in the Athens/Sparta duality…those who built walls, enjoys a relatively safe environment where sciences and arts would emerge and thrive, those who didn’t build walls relying instead on their sheer muscles for safety were uncivilized barbarians. So it’s the basic brain and brawn dichotomy. Some may dismiss it as an oversimplification. But Frye really puts forth a compelling argument and empirical evidence to support it. The walled in civilized society got soft and weak over time, making it easily conquerable. But the wallless brutes and the subsequent conquerors weren’t really leading enviable lives either, their lives essentially lacking any pleasure outside of rape, pillaging and murder. So who would you have been back in the day…a civilized arts appreciating science knowledgeable Athenian enjoying all the modern comforts of the time or a dirty brutal savage Spartan, toughened from childhood by the life of personal abnegation into something like a dirty malnourished possibly naked fighting machine? Soft as it might make you, life behind the walls sounds infinitely more enjoyable, doesn’t it. Of course, the walls didn’t always work as intended and even when they did work they required enormous effort to build and maintain, resulting in crazy high death tolls, but most of the time despite all the possible negatives it was still the best bet under the circumstances, much like democracy. And so it went on for centuries, empires came and went with their walls. And this book gives a terrific overview of all that straight down to the present day, wherein the rapidly increased migration and refugee crisis of the recent years resulted in modern wall building around the world, particularly Europe and Middle East. And now, of course, there’s a very real or at least much talked about (which seems to add up to the same thing these days) possibility of a wall between US and Mexico. Frye presents some very interesting statistics testifying to the effectiveness of walls protecting the country from the designated undesirables…in Europe it seems to just resituate the matter to the next country over, sort like passing the bucket, but on a grander scheme of things. It certainly puts things in a perspective and offers readers much food for thought in mulling over the situation. But aside from that, this book is such a terrific work of historical nonfiction. I love the concept of taking a subject and revolving the world around it and Frye’s done a really awesome job. The man is erudite, clever, knowledgeable on the subject and also surprisingly (since such books often tend to go for the neutral tone) opinionated and darkly humorous, it makes his narrative style all the more compelling and made this book all the more pleasure to read. It took a while to get through and in retrospect it might be best to dip into this one instead of plowing through most of it in one day to the sheer amount of information with which the mind is bombarded. But Frye is never pedantic and always entertaining, so it reads very well and easy as far as nonfiction goes. I finished it and felt accomplished and instantly smarter, like an instant brain boost. Which is just awesome. I know Tim Marshall also has a book about Walls coming out and sadly Netgalley didn’t have a Kindle friendly version of it, but now I’m thinking what more do I need to know about the walls. Then again in a while, it might be a great way to revisit the subject from another terrific intelligent author, but for now I consider myself adequately educated on the subject thanks to David Frye and this great book. Recommended. Thanks

Observing the Moon: The Modern Astronomer's Guide

From Booklist

Science writer North is full of useful information for backyard astronomers who would like to move to the next level in their observations of the earth's satellite. He opens with description (phases and eclipses, gravity and the tides) and history ("the pioneering selenographers"). Sections on telescopes, cameras, and CCD astrocameras follow, along with a chapter on "the desktop moon." The book's longest chapter is North's "`A to Z' of Selected Lunar Landscapes," which displays, with discussion, in detail 48 specific areas of the moon's surface. North closes with the controversial subject of "Lunar Transient Phenomena." Key advantages of North's volume include its practical focus--e.g., lots of advice on the strengths and weaknesses of various types of equipment--and its mix of vivid photographs (from, among others, NASA) and clarifying maps and charts. A useful addition to libraries' astronomy collections. Mary CarrollCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Booklist"The author has invested much time in preparing it [this book] and Cambridge University Press has done an excellent job of reproducing the many fine drawings and photographs included. The Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada"The latest in a long and venerable collection of astronomy titles from Cambridge University..." Bloomsbury Review"Observing the Moon is a 'must' for personal, professional, academic, and community library astronomy reference collections." The Bookwatch"Observing the Moon: The Modern Astronomer's Guide serves as a valuable introductory text and practical manual for the amateur astronomer...This book will help the beginner advance to become an experienced, lunar observer...easily readable and ejoyable book...Observing the Moon is highly recommended for the personal libraries of the beginning lunar observer or amateur astronomer. In addition, a public library or undergraduate institution with a program in astronomy or with a popular interest in the discipline would also benefit from owning this 'hands-on primer for the aspiring observer of the Moon.'" E-Streams"[In]Gerald North's Observing the Moon...He advises the novice observer based on his own experience, and he includes a brief review of lunar science from Apollo to Lunar Prospector. North richly illustrates his 48 crater descriptions with drawings, amateur and professional photographs, and spacecraft images....One thing that Westfall excelled at was imaging the lunar limbs at very favorable librations; thus, his images of the Humboldtianum(page 162) and Orientale (page 157) impact basins are more revealing than many professional photographs....I do recommend North's observing guide as visually pleasing, meaty, easy to read." Great moon observing book. Some Americans might be turned off that measurements of lunar features are presented in metric units. Don't let this deter you from purchasing this gem of a book. By the way, it doesn't take much practice to quickly and easily convert the metric numbers to English units.

North is a respected person in the amateur lunar community. Given that, I can't help but wish this book could have been somehow better.North starts out by giving a good account of the Moon itself, dealing with such concepts as gravity, tides, phases, libration, lunar coordinates, and occultations. He then goes forward to give a short account of pioneering lunar selenography. Then he goes onward with chapters dealing with drawing the Moon through a telescope and photographing the Moon with both cameras and CCDs. All of these chapters, while good, could have been more in depth, I think.A (very) short chapter on the Moon as it is studied from the desktop is included. This so barely scratches the surface the chapter is easy to miss. The largest portion of the book is a chapter (over 100 pages long) on selected lunar landscapes. This is a great part of the book and North does a great job with it. It seems the only part of the book that isn't cut short due to space considerations, but here more could possibly been done. Finally, there is a short, but good chapter on Transient Lunar Phenomena, the subject that North has been working on for some years. In the end, the most annoying part of the book for me was North saying again and again and AGAIN that "much more could be said about this, but I'm already over the page allotment that my publisher set." In the end, due to this, "Observing the Moon" is largely an average book...that has two GREAT books struggling to get out of it.Want a first book on the Moon? You can start with this, but it will only whet your appetite for more...which may not be a bad thing.Mr. North, I look forward to you working on the next version of this book. However, for the next version, if possible, split it into the two great books that are struggling to get out of the book you've written: one book that is just Chapter 8 ("Selected Lunar Landscapes") and another book that is all the other chapters.

North's very attractive book struck me less as a "good read" than as a useful reference for the amateur astronomer. The half of the book devoted to an "A-Z" of lunar landscapes in particular is quite good for this purpose -- if you've been out viewing the moon and are curious to know more about a particular feature, both the text and photographs are of value. I agree with a previous reviewer that this would have been better as two books. The overview chapters are well written but not of much value to the advanced astronomer; the information on CCDs, software etc. is likely to age pretty quickly. The info on transient lunar phenomena is interesting but not of much use unless you have a big 'scope. Still, as a reference book for lunar features I haven't seen much else that compares with it.

It is difficult to know what to say about this book. The author has invested much time in preparing it, and Cambridge has done an excellent job of reproducing the many fine drawings and photographs included. Yet it leaves me surprisingly flat; I suspect this is a book which will sit on my shelf rarely opened. The book is strangely lopsided. Its longest and best section, fully half the book, is a set of detailed descriptions of forty-eight selected regions of the Moon, selected for their topographic variety and interest. Each region is illustrated by photographs and drawings under various illuminations, and North provides descriptive text and an at-the-eyepiece tutorial. The drawings are typical of the British school of lunar drawing: meticulous pen and ink drawings which are striking to look at, but so stylized as to bear little resemblance to what one sees through the eyepiece. This massive descriptive section is preceded by seven short chapters to provide the reader, whom North typifies as an "interested amateur astronomer who is yet to become a lunar specialist," with the background necessary to begin observations of the Moon. After an introductory chapter, there are sections on the history of lunar observation, equipment and visual observation, photography, electronic imaging, the physical nature of the Moon, and reference sources. Following the large descriptive chapter, there is a chapter on transient lunar phenomena, obviously a subject dear to North's heart. Much of this material is superficial, but it is interlaced repeatedly with rather technical sections, almost as if the author wished to show off his scientific credentials. When I initially started to read the book, I gravitated to the chapter on reference sources. Clearly North's favourite source is Lunar Sourcebook-a User's Guide to the Moon. Unfortunately this is currently out-of-print. North lists seven books and maps taken from Sky Publishing's web site, which includes such standards as Antonin Rükl's Atlas of the Moon, and then makes an extraordinary statement: "I must admit that I have no personal experience of the adequacy, or otherwise, of any of these items." In other words, he has not bothered to consult a large part of the standard reference works for lunar observers! This was when I seriously began to doubt the quality of the research underlying the rest of the book. Finally, there is the question of North's writing style. This is what I call the "chatty British eccentric" style, typified by the writing of Patrick Moore and Gerald Durrell. While charming to some in small doses, it definitely becomes tiresome in a long book. Then there is his constant whining about the page limitations imposed on him by his publisher, which he repeatedly uses as an excuse to flog his other book and just about anything else published by Cambridge. It took a major effort of will for me to wade through all this.So what is an amateur astronomer interested in the Moon to do? My favourite book on the Moon, Rükl's Atlas mentioned above, is currently out-of-print, but due to be reprinted by Sky soon. It is what I always keep at hand while observing the Moon, and is well worth seeking out on the used market. I can't in all honesty recommend North's book to either a beginner or a more advanced student of the Moon.

I found the content most useful and practical. The writing style was different - most books dealing with astronomy tend to be dry and somewhat difficult to plaud through, I found the writing style to be engaging and an enjoyable learning experience.

A very useful book for moon observations.

Review

Alonzo Gaskill is one of my favorite authors, and this is one of the best books I have read on symbolism in religion. Those who are endowed would especially benefit from ancient temple symbolism and can draw correlations to how it relates to the symbolism used in LDS temples today. As is typical Gaskill, his footnotes are almost as extensive as the chapters and not something you want to skip over. Spend time reading his footnotes as you can learn as much from them as you can from the rest of his writings. If I could give more than 5 stars I would. --AmazonThis book is for my daughter and her husband, who loved the things I shared with her when I was reading my copy of this book before she went to the temple for the first time. It's very interesting how learning about other religion's practices can enhance my understanding of our (LDS) temple practices. We are taught symbolically in the temple, so understanding ancient practices and teachings is helpful in a world that does not typically understand or recognize symbolism. --AmazonThis book unfolds the 'mysteries' of heaven that are symbols here - the careful annotations (what fun to read the footnotes!) invite the spirit and the writing style never scares the spirit away while treating sacred topics. I'm grateful for the life experience of Brother Gaskill and his unique perspective to be able to bring all of us together with our ritual experiences by reverently discussing symbols. A must read for any temple goer seeking greater understanding. --Amazon

Great book, very insightful. I bought multiple copies of the CDs to also give to family members. The CDs are read by the author, but the publisher clearly speeded up his words to try to avoid having another CD in the book - I have heard the author speak in person, and it’s significantly faster than that (it’s so fast that I have a hard time understanding what is being said). My mom made the same comment when we discussed the book. One of the copies also came with a smashed case for the CDs. The book itself is five stars, but I am taking one off because of the ridiculous speaking speed and because one of the cases was broken. Highly recommend anything by this author.

truly an amazing book with deep research, information, and helpful descriptions. It's always good to be reminded of why these things are sacred, important, and need to be respected.

This book is a fantastic read! It is very insightful and I've found it difficult to put down. If you're wanting to learn more about symbols and symbolism in religion, this is your book. But it, you won't regret it.

Great and informative book about the symbols used in various religions. Documentation for sources is detailed and very helpful in order to understand the source of the symbolic meaning. A must read for anyone who has looked for symbolic meaning in the various religious symbols of their own religion, but has struggled to find an answer.

This book unfolds the 'mysteries' of heaven that are symbols here - the careful annotations (what fun to read the footnotes!) invite the spirit and the writing style never scares the spirit away while treating sacred topics. I have not read this yet because I have so much reading ahead of this book. Gaskill is a very good author so I am looking forward to it.

Very good was so glad to find it!
