I wish I read this FREAKING supplement to correspond with the readings assigned in my actual (and utterly horrendous) Constitutional Law textbook. Instead, I bought it to use as a study aid and didn't open it until 2/3rds of the way through the semester. Every test and principal that my professor tried (and failed) to explain in a simple way, was ACTUALLY successfully explained in a simple, easy to understand way in this supplement. My mind was blown over the numerous, seemingly confusing, topics I was able to cover and understand completely within a week. I say a week because It is a BIG supplement--over 1000 pages, but don't let that scare you! The book is organized beautifully-- it is very easy to find the topics that coordinate with the topics you actually went over in class, without being forced to read unnecessary material. Considering this is the law corresponding to the Constitution, there are only so many important principals and tests the class can discuss, and they are ALL discussed in this supplement. So lets say you are sitting in class, and your professor is ranting and cavorting in, out, and around the different types of judicial scrutiny a federal court uses to determine whether certain laws violate Equal Protection. Your professor speaks haphazardly and with utter abandon regarding every subject, making it much more complicated than it seems. Your head is spinning trying to remember when to apply what level of scrutiny and why and how and when... You begin to panic! Will you FAIL Con-Law?! Oh the humanity!....Then you go home, open this book to the chapter titled "Equal Protection" and right away, within the first 2 pages, it describes and lays out the different levels of scrutiny and when to apply them in an organized and rational fashion......"Why cant regular law school textbooks be written in such a way?!" you say as you angrily wave your fists in the air. Sadly, we will never know why law school textbooks are written like first drafts, but at least you have your supplement to save the day. Praise be to Chemerinsky and his amazing Constitutional Law supplement! Law students around the nation praise your name! If you are taking Constitutional Law, don't risk it, get this supplement. Also get the casenote legal briefs supplement--trust me--you will thank me later, especially when you attempt to read Marbury v Madison on your first day of class!

I cannot recommend this strongly enough. For me, this book made Chemerinsky's name synonymous with clarity and demystification. If you don't already know, you will learn sooner or later that Chemerinsky is a rockstar, so you may as well start benefitting now. (After this book, I bought his federal jurisdiction book just because it had his name, and I didn't regret it.) He writes about the law in a way that early law students can understand the significance of the cases and doctrines. It was a great boon to class preparation, by spending a few minutes finding the assigned cases in the superb index and reading up on them to learn the main points. It is practically guaranteed that any case you will be assigned to read is at least addressed, and probably at some length, in this volume. And since con law cases are some of the most impenetrable you will read your first year, having a cipher to them is priceless. You can also let the doctrines or topics guide your reading. The table of contents is detailed and the book flows logically. When it comes to studying for the exam, this is a great resource to rehash and digest what you've covered. There is substantive discussion on all things constitutional law here, written in a way you can understand. You need to optimize your time during exam season and this will help you make sense of the mess without pounding your head against your casebook.Constitutional law is one of the most intimidating classes for a law student, so a resource this comprehensive, lucid, and reputable is a must.

This book is really well written! However, if you only need *some* information, this might not be worth it.WARNING: if you have Barbri and watched the Con Law videos and did not find those helpful, this book likely won't be helpful either (done by the same man). It all depends on how your professor teaches Con Law. I can definitely see where this book can help someone, but it was useless for my class because of how the exam works. For example, my professor covers three very broad sections/clauses, so this book wasn't particularly helpful because it didn't get into the meat of it all and how to do the proper analysis; just cases and topics from those cases. This covers almost every topic, but it is dense at times.

I didn't start studying for my final until about 1 month before my final... and I was super behind. I got an A and calied the course- this book is AMAZING.

I cannot reccomend this book enough! It explains everything so clearly. Con law can be very hard to understand at times but this book is a lifesaver! This book is the reason I got an A!

Clarifies the textbook information and cases. For the most part, it does much better than his textbook at teaching the concepts of ConLaw, together they provide everything you need to get through ConLaw I & II; but, it is a lot of reading when you add this.

best con law book you could get your hands upon

I used this for Constitutional Law and again when I was writing my Note. Chemerinsky is really good at explaining Con Law. He also provides a multitude of sources for anyone writing a Note related to a Con Law topic. I would recommend this book if you were like me and struggled to understand Marbury v. Madison.

I'm an aspiring writer, so when I sit down to read a book, I'm not just reading it, I'm also looking at the nuts and bolts the author slapped it together with. So for me, finding a book with a writing style I enjoy is hard because I'm picky about the quality of the bits its made of and how those bits are soldered together. This one has a few ups and downsPros:- Solid writing style: I have not found one, single, solitary typo, syntax issue, or vocabulary imbalance. Good job Gary!- Easy read: the author doesn't spend needless amounts of time describing places or objects and the plot follows a singe protagonist on a linear plot. It's impossible to get lost.- Casual length: its not too long, this book is only a few hundred pages.Cons:- Booooorrrrrriiiiiing!!!!!!! Good lord, this book is boring. It starts slow, continues slower, and probably ends in a veritable crawl (I don't know because I couldn't finish the darn thing). Aside from 1 creepy scene where Marco is captured Acre, nothing happens. Ever. And when that kidnapping in Acre is over, Marco shrugs his shoulders at the gruesome, near-death experience and decides, "I guess I'll tell no one about this." The sorcerer doesn't come after him again for destroying all his urns and ruining his ritual; and the only permanent impact it has on the main character is, "figs and sesames are yucky now." Wow Jennings... profound. Marco doesn't develop paranoia, or revulsion, or a hatred of dark arts practitioners. He doesn't try to get revenge on the boys who drugged him and left him to a horrible fate. He doesn't report it to any authority figure to prevent others from befalling the same fate. Nothing. Just "oh well, moving on." So why was it even in the book?As Jennings regales us about one uneventful scene and sets another, I keep waiting for something of significance to happen, a challenge to make the protagonist grow, getting separated from his dad and uncle, the appearance of a love interest, ANYTHING. I kept telling myself, "surely there must be a reason the author decided this middle-of-nowhere pit-stop was noteworthy enough to expend ink on," But we get nothing. Bad form, sir Jennings, bad form.- Weak Protagonist: The protagonist is a one dimensional, unlikable dolt with almost no interesting qualities. He doesn't have any goals or ambitions and just bounces around from place to place "experiencing" things, being led by his father and uncle---who are much more interesting characters than Marco, as they actually seem to have personalities and things they're striving for.- Too many pointless side characters: As he travels, Marco bumps into a ton of other people from paupers to princes, and -none- of them have any impact on the tone, direction, or pacing of the story. Marco doesn't really learn from them, none of them have anything unique or wise or memorable to say. Jennings could literally have deleted 90% of these dialogues and lost nothing from the actual plot.- Pedophilia: Uhh... Okay, so I get that other cultures are different, and this book takes place during a time period long before the present day... but I don't see how the incessant reemergence of little boys diddling each other and offering up their anuses adds anything to the story. Its uncomfortable, unnecessary, and serves no actual purpose other than perhaps to sate some unforgivably disgusting fetish for the author. Blegh.... what a wince-inducing waste of narrative. Jennings was better served by talking about architecture, ancient tools and tech, linguistics and cultural etiquette. Those are interesting ways to delineate their time / culture from ours. Not that any of that adds to the plot either. Which brings me to my next issue...- What is the plot, exactly? At the beginning Marco sort of gets an ambition: get laid. Its weaker than watered down Bud Lite, but at least he was trying to accomplish something. But after Marco's imprisonment in Venice, the plot becomes: go somewhere else, I guess. But he doesn't do anything. He just follows along. He doesn't learn any cool skills or develop concerns / goals / needs of any variety. Anything can happen in the big open world, especially in those times. Would it have killed the author to invent something besides, "we bought a camel today, then rode that camel for like 5 months. One day I swallowed a bug." The End.

Gary Jennings researched his novels to exacting detail, which gives his usually first-person-narrated stories an accuracy and sense of "being there" that few other authors can accomplish. Since Marco Polo was broadly quoted as saying that he had reported only half of what he had seen and done, Jennings took that quote as the springboard to tell the "other half" in The Journeyer. Oh, and does he! Jennings is a true tale spinner, a titillating yarn teller nonpareil. Although this review site's parameters for violence and sexual content are limited to only three perfunctory levels, Jennings' inclusions of violence and sexual content are of the most exquisite and delicious descriptive language. To be clear: if heat bothers you, this kitchen is likely not for you. Nevertheless, once begun, The Journeyer is a hard read to put down. It's erudite, historically and argot accurate, and just plain fun to consume.

I didn't think that Gary Jennings could top himself after the masterpiece that was "Aztec," but I was wrong. The amount of research that must have been done, and the attention to detail, then woven into this mesmerizing tale of a world that was on the brink of linking cultures previously kept separate by geography, topography, fear, and peril. You will love this book. You will alternately praise Jennings for his mastery at the craft of weaving a tapestry of curiosities and curse him for the sleep you lose when you absolutely must find out where the story leads. This is exactly the kind of book that can awaken in the reader a thirst for knowledge, history, and adventure. Be forewarned: if you lend this book out, you'll never set eyes on it again.

I enjoyed Aztec very much so I went into this book with high expectations. I made it exactly 30% in (according to my Kindle) and I'll read no more. The story is somewhat plodding at this point. What I can't stand is Jennings' fascination with pedophilia. He describes in great detail how young boys are raised and physically conditioned to be used by men starting at age 4. The story's protagonist (Marco Polo) takes a boy of 8 to sell him into sexual servitude. All the while Polo has to fight off his personal lust for the boy and the boy is gladly used by Polo's Uncle. Polo then decides to not judge his Uncle so harshly. These type of descriptions are repeated in different ways. I really don't like to read books that cause me to wince so much.

Gary Jennings did good research and seemed to have follow the original translated work of Marco Polo, adding his own imaginative detail for information Polo left out (personal info and opinions). His early bio (fictitious narrative) is wonderful and sets Marco's personality as an adventurer who is ready for any challenge. The whole story from start to finish is great. It was terrific to be able to buy the book at a low price and have it shipped speedily. I am reading it with two other books simultaneously - Mr. Selden's Map of China by Timothy Brooke, and The Illustrated Edition of The Travels of Marco Polo translated by Henry Yule and edited by Morris Rossabi keeping Polo's activities neck and neck with each. Good books all and each.

First read this book in paperback, many years ago. Hard to believe a book can make such an impression, that you can remember portions for years. Not sure how the author can describe the experience of a long ago traveler, and make it so believable. It was almost like he was in the mind of the journeyer, and conveys the experiences and encounters of the main character with such flair that you believe this is a real biography. Hard to believe the author can describe the terrain, people encountered, and the sight, sound and smells of this journey, without having been there. What an imagination.Thank goodness for Amazon and Kindle, I can read and enjoy this experience again. Long read, but worth it.

I found Elena Ferrante by accident, a name mentioned in passing in an article chanced upon in an otherwise empty minute. In some sense, isn't this how we always meet the people who will matter, by some whim of circumstance? Ferrante writes women as they are. The complexities, confusions, passions, losses - Ferrante distills this into female characters in whom you see pieces of every girl, maiden, woman, or crone you will ever know. I gifted this to my sister for her most recent birthday, and it's not often I gift books -- doing so reveals too much of who you are at the time you pass the book into the hands of another. There is nothing left secret after reading The Neapolitan Series.

I powered through all four books even though there were many disturbing images and developments. Growing up in 1950's Naples was complete foreign territory to me and terrifying in many ways as I had been raised in a more or less safe loving environment in Ohio where education was guaranteed and highly valued. I took away a number of valuable insights on relationships, raising children and personal development which I hope I don't forget. Much of what happens through out the story is harsh and hard to accept which leads me to believe that this is not for everyone. The beauty of the writing and the fascination with Lila and Lenu did keep me glued until the end of the saga and I am sorry to have to move on other writing. I hope I've learned something about improving my own writing. I send heartfelt thanks to the author for this amazing work.

I recently read What Happened by Hillary Clinton. Throughout the book she mentions books she read. This quartet is one she read following her election, and it appealed to me. I read all four books. They totally held my attention from beginning to end. They tell the story of two Italian female friends from childhood through old age. They're well written, and the characters are realistically developed.

Its follows the story of two girls, who are best friends, in the eyes of the world, but mostly rivals in reality. Their actions are dictated by a certain sense of one-upmanship towards each other. One of them is effortlessly brilliant, but devious. All this in the backdrop of Naples. The novel spans decades and follows the girls, right upto their old age. Their relationships, careers, children and all the ups and downs faced by them in their lives are covered. A lot is spoken about the political and social climate of Italy in those times. Its a fantastic read, albeit long (all 4 novels). I felt very involved/engaged in the story, such was the power of the narrative.

Elena Ferrante's words are magic. I read all four books in one week, because (obviously) I couldn't put them down. I had to know what happened to both heroines, their families, their neighborhood, friends, various locations in Italy, etc. The translational the books from Italian to English isn't always smooth. There are cultural and expression differences that just don't have a mirrored counterpart in English, but meaning is understood. I found the parts where the translation was not a perfect match to be some of the most interesting reads, because it gave you a truer presentation of what a native speaker would say and how they might express themselves. While on this train of thought, I was struck by the domestic violence and wondered whether this was a product of the time period in which the stories took place, whether it was common in poorer Italian locations (the author didn't show this type of spousal or girlfriend abuse amongst the wealthier characters)or whether it was simply fictionalized. It was interesting. Anyway - I could not recommend this series of books higher!!!

I read all 4 books straight through. It was seamless, just like one novel. The characters are complex. We see them grow from young girls, through motherhood and careers and finally older age. I could not put it down and their lives have stayed with me long after I closed the last page.

I love the story, the writing, the sociology in the book. Really describes life during the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. Even though it takes place in Italy, mostly in Naples, the author's experiences mirrored mine so muchWomen's issues, struggle to survive, all different social classes of people. Truly an amazing body of work

I am born in Italy and I have visited many parts of Italy includingNaples not long ago. I am from a modest family and I am the first to get college degrees, so to me it was mesmerizing to place myself in Elena's and see what the different upbringing did for the two girls and the future for both. Fascinating and good writing. Gina
