While at the Botanical Gardens Library in Cleveland researching options for "organic" pest control for vegetable gardening, and home pest control (for ants,carpenter bees, etc) I paged through a table full of books. MY goal was to formulate a pesticide that would control garden and home pests, yet be so non-toxic as to be potentially edible by humans. My focus included using essential plant oils as active ingredients, but was open to other non-toxic solutions as well. While pour over a number of volumes and as a side I pulled this book off the shelf, knowing full well that it was not going to specifically address my issues in depth. After I reviewed this volume I quickly discovered I was wrong. "Common Sense Pest Control" is very broad in scope, covering everything from wood-rot, to bats, to ants, to slugs and offers "common sense" approaches to controlling, eliminating, and in some cases: living with, common pests. After finding great information for my specific research in this book, I realized this was a reference that I should not be without in the future. The book is older, but newer information on the subject that I have found, leans more to chemical-sense solutions rather than common-sense. Amazingly I discovered that this hidden gem was dirt cheap in perfect condition hardcover here on Amazon. Highly recommended - a secret bargain -- I debated writing a customer review about this book, as I was going to purchase 4-5 of them and give them to friends and family as gifts. (Please leave me a few.)

So much information but all of it useful. Whether you are an organic farmer, a backyard gardener or somewhere in between you will benefit from perusing this tome for advice every time you have a pest issue regardless of its form (animal, mineral or vegetable). I have an organic farm and have recommended this latest edition to everyone that will stand still long enough to listen.

It's missing a lot on entomology. The section it does have is pretty brief. Overall it's a good guide, but it is not a good reference to troubleshoot sick plants.

Great integrated pest management without using nasty pesticides. I showed it to a Master Gardener and she is getting a copy to add to her library.

The continuing story of how people of faith deal with the survival decisions they must make in an apocalyptic world. One passage as the grandfather is talking to his grandson, really moved me. This is not your typical apocalypse story. These main characters have a deep faith and the struggles they deal with show a more humanistic side, the sanctity of life, the power of love and the belief that a supreme being can and does answer prayers. Very enjoyable to read a story of this fashion and I am hoping Jeff Motes will continue the storyline wherever it goes. I find these three books even more entertaining as each chapter (mostly) is told from a different character's point of view. Very easy and quick reading and I highly recommend this series for anyone searching for a more personal side of an apocalypse.

Book number three of a three book post apocalyptic EMP series. I read the excellent POD (print on demand) trade paperback. I do not know if there will be more books in the series but if so, I will buy them.This book is a sequel to the first two books which run in parallel. The first book is about two people getting home after the EMP destroys their cars. The second book is about the people at home dealing with the new reality after the EMP has basically destroyed all electric devices.Things are tough at home. A large biker gang ambushed the County Sheriffs office and took it over. After a couple of weeks, people are having trouble getting food and reuniting their families. Even clean water is tough to get.The book performs an in-depth examination of an individual who refuses to accept the new reality. And that persons's compromised ethics make things worse for other people as they work around that person's manipulation.The author, an degreed Electrical Engineer and a licensed Professional Engineer, takes the point that an EMP over the USA will be so destructive that all computers in phones, control systems, and cars will be destroyed. He even thinks that LED light bulbs will have their inner circuit boards destroyed. I think that this thinking is a little extreme as car computers live in a horribly noisy and hazardous environment. Should the USA get EMP'd, I think that car computers will get locked up but a simple reboot (restarting) will clear the fault. But, I could be totally wrong !BTW, there are frequent mentions of Christianity in the book via prayers and such. At least once per chapter and sometimes several times per chapter. I have an acquaintance who is an atheist who was offended by the amount of prayers in the first book. I am a Christian so I appreciate the amount but others might not.

VERY good installment in what I hope will be several more in the series! A couple of points had me wanting to yell "WILL just grab Lizzy and leave" but the story played out very well with a big shocker towards the end These characters are believable and it's hard not to think of them as real people the author has done a remarkable job of pulling you into their lives and making them feel like family! I am a big fan of this genre and this series by far is one of my favorites I am hoping for more to come

I have read all three of the books "Once upon an Apocalypse". All three are great books to read. Book three is a very emotional read. It touched my spirit and I would have to remind myself "it is only a story". I highly recommend this book series. Great job Jeff Motes. Looking forward to book 4!

Jeff Motes had done it again. This third installment in his Once Upon an Apocalypse series deftly ties together the threads of the first two books and does it with pulse pounding intensity. This series highlights the things that could happen, especially in today's volatile political climate, and does it with characters and situations that certainly ring true. He shows the comfort that true Faith can bring as well as the wisdom of preparing for'just in case'. This series is exciting, thought provoking and informative with characters that are engaging and endearing. I highly recommend it.

A great read that efficiently concludes the journey of the first 2 books. As we see society starting to cope and adapt to the new challenges, the author clearly focuses on its further breakdown. The author has expertly crafted the story to convey the helplessness and fragility that society has become in that one wrong move can be perilous. Good forces must come together in order for one to succeed, however, individual courage and strength makes this possible. Jeff Motes does a fine job explaining how preparation is so important for the future success of the main characters. This fiction translates well into reality, where through great character development and vivid scenery, we can see the parallels in today's society if an EMP apocalypse were to actually take place.

Mr. Motes has truly hit his stride with this, the 3rd book, in his Once Upon an Apocalypse series.What would I do if the world as we know it experienced a cataclysmic disaster? Am I prepared? Do I have what it takes? Would I be a 'good guy' or would feelings of inadequacy push me into making bad decisions, wrong choices? These are all questions that you ask yourself as you read this series. If you pay attention, you'll find helpful tips as to how to give yourself a better chance at being a survivor rather than a victim.Like many who have left a review already, my life went on hold once I began reading Mr. Mote's latest book. Supper was forgotten. The sky grew dark. I was hooked! What will happen to Will and Lizzy? It was difficult to put down. The worst part about it? Now I have to wait for the 4th book in the series to come out!

A Heartfelt foreword started this very enjoyable book. Uniquely real, believable characters and plot lines. Unlike many books of this genre, the author uses dialogue that is realistic. The warnings and advice in this story are becoming more prophetic everyday. Take heed!

A great read for anyone entering the field of school administration in the US. This book explains the demographic shifts undergone by the city of Hartford (CT) and how the desegregation of schools promised under Brown v. board of education in 1954 never fully materialized. In some cases however, the gains achieved under Brown v. board of education were gradually rolled back due to suburbanization and the resulting ghettoization of urban centers and their public schools. The Children in Room E4: American Education on Trial is a chronicle, among other things, of the Sheff v. O'Neill, a lawsuit brought against the city of Hartford in attempt to wright he wrongs perpetrated against inner city public school children.

This book goes beyond simply explaining what the challenges in urban education are -- it shows where they came from. With a detailed history of the Supreme and Federal Court decisions since Brown v. Board of Education, Eaton illustrates how segregated and isolated schooling has been perpetuated and gotten worse in the last 50 years. Her analysis does it in two ways: first, by focusing closely on a high achieving Hartford class of students in their third and fourth grade years (the Micro view) and by showing how the Macro problems -- the legal history -- have enabled the complete ignoring and disempowerment of American cities.In so doing, Eaton tells the story of Sheff v. O'Neill -- a landmark Connecticut court decision on the vastly segregated and unequal state of schooling in the Hartford area. She explains how the legal team put the case together, the data they collected, their Constitutional interpretations, and their battles to win....If you are from Connecticut, interested in schooling or in school law, this book is perfect for you.

I recently read "The Children in room E4" by Susan Eaton for my education seminar. Before reading this compelling novel I was in the dark about the injustices of urban schooling. I knew that there were more minority students in the city school systems but I had no idea about the poor quality of education they were receiving. While I thought some parts of this book were dull and just informative there was a lot more to it. This novel does much more than inform about a court case, it allowed me to feel Mrs. Luddy's pain, I could feel the children's stress over these tests. It makes me want to do something. Want to help. What drew in to this novel was the opening about Jeremy that is really what kept me interested this whole time. I wanted to see Jeremy and his family succeed, I wanted to believe he could make it. But Eaton let reality set in and made me realize that won't be the case for most of these kids. I thought we gave an equal opportunity to everyone here in America but this books facts say otherwise and with the facts like the ones used in this book there is no doubt in my mind that something more needs to be done. Eaton brought justice to these kids like no one else.

I have used this book for several years in a course I teach on social change and found it to be a perceptive, well-written account of the massive inequities that continue to plague our education system. I think her approach of focusing on a particular student at a particular school while also examining a broader, ongoing school desegregation case strikes a wonderful balance between a very human, and heart wrenching story of how we limit the opportunities of individual students to succeed while talking about the larger causes for school disparities.

Just what I ordered and needed.

This was a valiant attempt by a very good historian to write a parallel biography of two historic adversaries. However it was painfully obvious that the source information was quite unparallel. This was particularly obvious in the early lives of the two subjects. While there was some information about the early life of Custer, all the author could do about the early life of Crazy Horse was to discuss how his life "probably" occurred. And as the book progressed, it became obvious that this was an effort to use earlier research about West Point Military Academy to publish another book. I enjoy reading Ambrose, and I looked forward to reading this one, but it was disappointing.Reading this, I learned a lot about Custer, but I do not feel that I learned much detail about Crazy Horse.

This should have 10 stars. I an 83 yr. old that has read over a thousand books since I got an adult library card at age 6. I have had to slow down my reading because of eye trouble, but the ability of the paperwhite to increase font size had helped me keep my speed up. But this book is the best thing I come across in years. I was born in upper Minnesota and spent time on the Sioux reservation. I've also read some things about Custer and The Little Big Horn. All were weak in early detail and the culture. This book delves deeply into BOTH the lives of Custer and Crazy Horse.and their opposite cultures. For anyone interested in the early West and the lives of the Indian tribes as opposed to the upbringing of Custer will find it all here.

Another one of those riveting, story like history books that Stephen E. Ambrose seems to put out effortlessly."Crazy Horse and Custer..." is an excellent, well rounded book that takes a topic that is very tender in American History, and presents both sides of the issue, allowing the reader to form their own viewpoint on the Native American's history in the northern Plains. On one side, there is Custer: the ambitious, romantic, and magnetic soldier that in a way is the perfect picture a young, forward thinking America. On the other, there is the calm, powerful Crazy Horse, who embodies everything we love about the noble Plains Indians--fierce, humble, kind, and simply taking life in stride, but like a coiled spring, ready to defend intruders who would disrupt their way of life.Ambrose takes these two, and does a wonderful job explaining how their society made them. Custer comes from a progress driven, hard working society that is the individualistic personae working together for a common goal--but always working, always moving forward, learning from the past to apply it to the future. Crazy Horse comes from the society that has seen it all. and is content with how it worked out for them. They take what they need, and let it go at that. They live as a giant family of independents who are content to reflect on the past, and bring it to the present.It is a gripping tale of blundering West Pointers, undisciplined Sioux war parties, and most of all, brave fighters, on both sides, pitted against one another in a battle for the Plains.

Of course, we all know some of the story of these two men. However, this book really fills in the blanks! Two totally different cultures but two fighting men with two different reasons to be fighting. I have always thought the Indians really were mistreated by the government and this account certainly agrees with my thinking. For some reason, white people did not think of the Indians as "human" which is unthinkable since they definitely were human - just with a totally different culture. They were hunters and gatherers who knew nothing about farming but that is what our government wanted them to do. The Indians were forced to give up everything - their culture, their way of life, the land they lived on because settlers kept moving west and our government did nothing to protect anything the Indians had. There is no wonder that the massacre at Little Bighorn happened. In fact, it was inevitable. If you have never been to the Custer Battlefield National Monument, you should go to see where it all happened. It is a truly remarkable site!I must add that I really liked the way Mr. Ambrose finished this book with "what happened to most of the main characters ". That alone gave closure to what happened to each person. I truly loved this book.

This is one of the longest books I've ever read. Because of my working life I shy away from long books because I of hectic schedules and reading times. But this book really captured my interest. Yes we all kind of know the story and yes we all know the outcome, but the back story of two completely different men is fascinating. You have George Custer a graduate of West Point and Crazy Horse who went to the School of Hard Knocks, but became a masterful military tactician as he matured. If you like history of the old west and want to learn of the plight of the Indian tribes getting pushed farther west for the white mans settlement and profits you'll like this book. Plus the author parallels the lives of Custer and Crazy horse from childhood to death in a well documented manner.

My brother has talked to me about this book for so many years, I finally decided to read it. I have experience with Native Americans, my brother with the Military . . . so he was particularly interested in hearing my impressions. I'm a bit more than half way through the book now. At first I had a tough time because Ambrose writes with a heavy hand . . . though it is obvious he has researched the subject matter to the nth degree, it's just difficult for me to read. He started to grab my attention when he was discussing the very interesting differences between Whites and Indians. His descriptions of Crazy Horse and the tribes with which he was affiliated were nothing short of fascinating. There is such detail about why and how they did what they did, you come away with a truly intimate view. Likewise, Custer's overwhelming, cloying arrogance is keenly proven throughout his entire life. We all know what happens in the end, but the phenomenal turns of events leading up to it are well worth your history-loving efforts.
