This book was massively disappointing, I don't know how it has so many positive reviews.First of all, the book is tiny. It's got 80 pages of large print, widely spaced text with a few basic diagrams thrown in. If you shrank the print size and spacing down to normal book sizes I think you'd be looking at about 40 pages, which is pretty paltry. I read it in about an hour.Second, the information presented is poorly laid out, frustratingly lacking in detail, and poorly edited. The book jumps around with little sense of flow, repeats itself, and uses Wikipedia as it's only reference.Third, despite promising to in the title, it doesn't actually teach you to make Moonshine, Whiskey, or Vodka!! It doesn't seem like too much to ask a book to actually deliver on the promises in it's title, but incredibly this book fails at that. This book gives sketchy "recipes" without any details on what to do with the ingredients for Moonshine, Whiskey, etc... but amazingly says right there on page 60: "In this book we don't really have time to cover everything...so we are going to make rum." Then the author says that if you want to actually learn all the steps for making something other than rum, you'll need to buy his other books!! What kind of shady bait and switch nonsense is this?Finally, as other reviewers have noted, the author has a bizzare habit of arguing nastily in the comments with folks who give his book low reviews. Had I read the reviews more thoroughly before purchasing this I would have seen the warnings for everything I've listed here, noted the strange way the author responds to constructive criticism, and gone elsewhere.There are other, much better books availible. I have read some other books on moonshining which were better than this one.1) Paraphased from book - The air lock device is half filled with water and it allows CO2 to escape without letting oxygen in. The yeast is happily eating the sugar and making new yeast but needs oxygen to do that.My response: Keep oxygen out but the yeast needs it. So which is it, In or out?2) It told what to put into the thump keg but not how much to put. I had to google to find out you never fill it over half full because it will puke it out.3) Some of the recipes sucked. I have never seen ones that required 3 pounds of sugar to 1 gallon of water. The rule of thumb is 1 pound of sugar to 1 gallon of water.

A very well written and educational book for anyone curious about the process of making alcohol,it covers everything from how to make stills to different mash recipes

Jeff King explains a lot of what's going on in distilling. Yes it is for the beginner or someone who wants to understand what goes on in the making of spirits.

The book is easy to read and provides good explanations on how to distill alcohol. Particularly, liked the explanations on bourbon, scotch, and gin.

And Jeff has a wacky sense of humor that is evidenced in his writing.( Could it be from too much sampling of the product?) Great information that does show how easy it is to make your own sippin' whiskey.

When my husband became interested in the art of distilling, the worry, problem solving, and occasional mash making was left to me. This is a great book if you are looking for the basics of distilling. It is concise and well written. It allayed my fears, gave me enough information to be obnoxious, and provides some easy to follow mash recipes. When I purchased the paperback edition, I was alerted that a free kindle edition was thrown in as a bonus.

This book provides a gentle review of differential and integral calculus. About 2/3rds of the material is devoted to differential calculus. Numerous fully worked examples, as well as problems with full solutions, are provided in each Unit. Each of the 28 Units ends with a relatively long list of exercises, usually hovering around 20 or so. Fully worked answers, not just solutions, for all exercises are provided at the end of the book. However, the solutions are not completely without problems.Some of the features which make the book appealing as a basic introduction may limit its usefulness for those who need to use calculus for more advanced work or "real world" problems in the immediate future. Examples are overly simplified compared to even modestly complex applications in the undergraduate curriculum or the "real world". As an example, the Unit on Linear Applications presents a demand function for a homemade cake business, where the business can sell no more than 10 cakes. This is excellent for a novice calculus learner, but it might disappoint the economics’ major who might hope for a few more realistic examples. The business nature of problems used in the text and exercises will limit the books value for engineering and science students.The book, as one might expect of any mathematics book, is not free from errors, although the number is smaller than one would expect for a book with this many worked problems. Also, most of the errors are fairly obvious and should not be a problem, even for beginners. As an example of the errors one might encounter, here are some from Unit 6. On page 79 a "+" is inadvertently changed to a "-"; example 5 gives the wrong vertex for a quadratic function, and the graph of 6.1 gives incorrect values for f(-1) and f(-5). In Unit 7 we can see that these occasional problems continue. For example. The reader is asked for the answer to Problem 6b, where the question is asked how we can “Interpret the y-intercept”. However, the answer presented for 6b, is for a question not asked, i.e., “how can we interpret the answer given to part 6a”?. Occasionally a problem solution is left off as in Exercise 5d in Unit 11, or a problem appears, Exercise 20 in Unit 15, that is unconnected to the material in the Unit.The book is an "old style" calculus text in that it emphasizes repetitive pencil and paper problem solutions. The text and Exercises often provide a small amount of material on and for the TI-83 graphing calculator. However, the emphasis is clearly on solutions to simplified problems, easily solved by hand. The exercises provide for extensive repetition. For the reader having problems, this is extremely helpful. Others, however, may select to solve only a few of the end of chapter exercises. Some may even decide to solve only the examples and problems in the text and skip the exercises completely, as the text presents all the necessary material clearly. However, the book provides plenty of opportunity to complete exercises if wanted.In summary, this book is an excellent basic introduction or review of calculus for the business or economics major. It is a friendly introduction, with concepts clearly explained with relatively few errors considering the large number of examples, problems, and exercises presented. Fortunately, most of the errors are easy to see, and the reader will have few, if any, problems.I kept track of the time to read the chapters and solve all chapter exercises. Based on my results, it should be possible to complete the book at a reasonably comfortable pace within a month, or even less time with a more concentrated effort. I devoted only 3 hours/day and I used a TI Nspire calculator (a more modern version than the calculator referenced in the text and presented in the exercises).

Its different from the text I used just a few years ago to learn calculus. It explains things step by step instead of just assuming you follow their thinking like most calc texts do. I realize the reason for the other texts doing this but in the end it gets distracting and confusing for the student and this text seems to realize this. The author of this book takes the time to explain EVERYTHING they're doing in a problem including the basic math/algebraic stuff so you don't have to waste time on it and you can get down to getting used to calculus. When I first learned calculus it was scary and confusing, this text makes it so much simpler. It does show you a lot applications for it in business which might be of help to you business majors out there. Unfortunately for my case, I can't say I found them to be too useful as my reasons for needing calculus are much more scientific. I wish there was a part two to this text because there are a few harder integrals and partial derivative problems that I use but are hardly touched upon. I need a version of this book for advanced calculus. (like the kind you use in physics and chemistry) Perhaps we can call it "Forgotten Advanced Calculus".

If you're an old guy like me returning to college to finish your degree this book is a must. This book is not a text book but rather an example book. You look up the type of problem you need to solve and there will pages of examples, broken down to show you how to solve it. This book is great at kicking the cobwebs loose after 2 decades of not using calculus.

This book helped me to prepare for a college calculus course. I hadn't taken a math course since 2001. This book helped refresh my memory on the building blocks of functions and graphs and then moved me ahead to derivatives and integrals. Each unit is explained very clearly with basic practice problems. The author does a wonderful job of adding new skills onto those learned in previous units. Each unit keeps you moving forward. The lessons are basic and work well to prepare a student for more difficult ones in a college class. This doesn't go as deep as a college course, but does a great job of preparing you for it. I am doing well in my college course because this book taught me all of the basics.The author also wrote a book just like this one for algebra (called Forgotten Algebra). I went through that one first. I would recommend it also for anyone wh isn't readily familiar with fractions, exponents, square roots, radicals, and linear and quadratic equations.I owe a large debt of gratitude to Barbara Lee Bleau for writing Forgotten Algebra and Forgotten Calculus. I don't have much of a math background. The last math course I took was trigonometry 12 years ago. With these two books I gained the knowledge and confidence to succeed in a college calculus course. I highly recommend both books to anyone looking to brush up on algebra and calculus or learn it for the first time.
