This book is notorious in the Equatorial Pacific. I spent 3 years on the island of Kiritimati, which is part of the Republic of Kiribati. I didn't read it until I had been there. If someone had told me that even half of it was true I would have said BS. But having experienced much of what he writes about, it is all true and then some. Great beach read. You can knock it out in a weekend.A belly laugh on almost every page.. Rumor is that when the Republic of Kiritimati found out that someone wrote a book about their country they thought it was wonderful.....until someone actually read it. Word is that Maarten Van Troost was sued for libel by Kiritimati. The case was thrown out because you can only libel an individual not a nation. He is supposedly now persona non grata in the Republic. You want a hilarious look at Pacific island nations this is it.

I downloaded a sample and it was funny and interesting, so I figure, what the heck. I wanted to like this book so much but only made it halfway through. He started to go into a long history of the people and the island and while I get it, I bought the book to read about his adventures. I also found his way of talking kind of condescending. He acts like he made this huge sacrifice while he grabbed onto his girlfriend's apron strings and milked her job to have his own adventure. Lame.

I haven't written a book, so I get it. Writing a book is hard. But common - you can't name your book The Sex Lives of Cannibals and have it be this dry and plodding. I'm on page 100 - that's right I'm reviewing without finishing it - and will say I've laughed out loud twice so that's something. All in all, it's a detailed play by play of living on a remote island and all the hardship that entails. Old food. Dirty water. Gross habits of the locals. Etc. You get the idea. I'm thrilled this guy wrote his novel and shared it with the world - but I'd skip this and read something by Barbara Kingsolver instead like The Poisonwood Bible if you're after adventure and a book you can't put down.

Well I have to admit up front that I lived from 1950 to 1969 on two of the islands mentioned in this book and that I have a smattering of 'Gilbertese' as it was known back then. I was just a boy growing up among the wonderful Gilbert and Ellice Island people and their then simple life.My rating of five stars, therefore is based on the fact I know this book to be true. I have friends living on Tarawa to this day.I saw my father in the author. My father lived on Ocean Island (now Banaba) from before the Second World War to the late fifties and I can still see him in his crisp whites going off to the office every day to work.,I can also remember the day we had the phone installed. Ours was one of the first because of his position on the phosphate commisssion staff. I can remember hand pumping water from the concrete cistern to the header tank, the rats, geckos, the mozzies the cockroaches, the spiders, climbing the enormous coconut palms with the steps cut into the trunks the I-Kiribati work gangs smoking their pandanus leaf cigarettes and paying their game of hackey sack with a square ball woven from coconut or pandanus leaves. And I have flown Air Nauru. Enough said.Perhaps this book is not for everybody but if you have ever traveled hard into remote corners of anywhere you will identify wit some of the yarns in this book and you will undoubtedly enjoy the light style in which it is written.

There's no real plot here, no through line that makes you curious what will happen next. But it is a charming account of remote island life - realistic, quirky, disease-ridden, lively. - from an outsider's point of view. It also has some interesting history about the area that will make you shake your head in shame over the way we treat this planet.

A fascinating book, often hilariously funny, sometimes disgusting and totally gross. But because it is a true account, I find myself citing the book often. Really interesting. Life on a remote tropical island is not always quite as romantic as you might imagine.... Not even close. Some of the chapters are really awful -- you learn way too much about things you hope are not true. Some are so funny you laugh out loud.

Personally, I only got as far as Hawaii, but this book about Kiribati echoes what I intuited while there. In brief: the natives are NOT happy and it is NOT paradise, at least for them! This book also captured more accurately than most the dissolute atmosphere of the South Pacific and the ennui of the place. You can't get this stuff in the official guidebooks which scream "aloha" and "paradise". This is what real life is like in this part of the world and in this part of a very large, isolating ocean. The brief section on gender relations was, to my mind, especially revealing.

This is my favorite J. Maarten Troost book. He really speaks to the escapist's heart in this one. He describes being in a mind-numbing job, feeling like he isn't truly living, so off he travels to a deserted island with his girlfriend. The entire book is sarcastic, optimistic and will make you laugh until you cry. I highly recommend this book!!

#20,784 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

In her debut novel, Author Jaime Jo Wright has delivered a compelling tale of murder and mystery through a time split story-line connected by an old abandoned house, the lives it touched, and the long protected secrets it holds. Gripping suspense, multiple plot twists, hair raising terror, and well developed characters travel across the pages and I found myself riveted by Kaine Prescott's and Ivy Thorpe's lives as they converged at The House on Foster Hill. Wright has woven a dual story so intricately entwined it took me to the end of the book to unravel and reveal the truth. And, it was a surprise...not what I was expecting at all. The seamless transition from one era to the other kept the smooth rhythm of the story flowing and held me captive with each turn of the page to the very end.Though the story in both eras has a dark  and ominous feel to it, it also offers light and life. Intertwined with the frightening evil that overshadows the house, a legacy of hope rises and shines through the strong women who refuse to let the house's secret ruin their lives or force them to live in fear; women who look to an eternal future. Wright does an exceptional job weaving faith into everyday moments in a natural, unforced way...as it should be. Talk of God's love and His promises written in scripture were flawlessly laid within casual conversation and deep reflections by the characters. Wright has crafted a well written debut and is an author to watch in the coming years. I look forward to more from her.

This is not my typical genre because it's usually too unrealistic, so when I decided to try this book, I wasn't expecting much. However, I was very pleasantly surprised! Not only did the characters seem real but the mystery itself was woven into the story seamlessly. The dual timeline added a nice twist and was quite interesting. Although there was romance in the book, it was secondary, which I prefer. It's amazing that this is the author's debut novel because it was excellent. Extremely captivating with just the right amount of suspense to keep me turning the pages as fast as possible.I enjoyed this book so much. If other authors would follow suit in writing a realistic mystery/suspense novel, I may give romantic suspense another try. Very well done, Jaime Jo Wright. You nailed it! I look forward to reading more by this author.

Excellent debut novel by Jamie Jo Wright. I don't usually read dual time novels, but the cover of this book just drew me in. The book is every bit as chilling as the cover. It contains all the elements necessary for a great suspense novel - unexplained occurrences, suspicious characters, as well as the spooky old house. Wright balances these with a touch of romance for the two women who find themselves gripped by the mystery of Foster Hill House in two different times. She connects the stories beautifully. I can't wait to read more from this author.

Because I had heard a lot of positive buzz about Jaime Jo Wright’s debut novel, The House on Foster Hill, I thought I’d offer it to my book club as a possibility for our 2018 schedule. The blurb sold it to my group, but it was the actual reading experience that gave it a unanimous thumbs up! We loved the spooky atmosphere, the engaging characters, and the mystery that spanned over a hundred years. Because we read a lot of suspense it isn’t easy to surprise us, but this one did. We never saw the ending coming! We are excited to have found another author to add to our must-read list.Dual plot lines set in the present day and in 1906, appealed to our members who like contemporary and/or historical novels. The two stories intertwine well. The action alternated between Kaine and Ivy’s stories keeping us turning the pages as quickly as possible — we had to know what was happening with both of these engaging and interesting characters. Kaine and Ivy are women of their times, but share a determination to get to the bottom of the mysteries that the shady Foster Hill House presents. Although some of us wanted to shake them from time to time, we generally loved them. The two male characters were a treat as well. Very different from each other, my group was split on which we liked better, but were pleased with how both added to the stories and the main characters’ lives. The book provided great discussion for our group — family history and secrets, human trafficking now and then, and keeping alive the memories of those who have passed.Often my book club gets off task during our monthly discussions, but this month we had no trouble staying focused on The House on Foster Hill. Kudos for an impressive first novel. We look forward to many more from an author to watch.Highly Recommended.Great for Book Clubs.Audience: adults.

The number of times this book gave me the chills! The twists, the turns, the unexpected’s! I enjoy a good book written in a dual timeline, and Ms. Wright does not disappoint. Both threads are well written, characters alive on each page, and the connection from one to the other is evident while keeping the reader guessing. The story lagged for me in a few places, and some of the dialogue didn’t seem in keeping with the era, but not enough to through out of the telling, or put the book down altogether. Seriously, this is a page turner and kept me reading several nights long after I should have put it down. This book was given to me as a gift. I offer my review of my own free will, and the opinions expressed in my review are my own honest thoughts and reaction to this book.#Blogwords, Tuesday Reviews-Day, #TRD, Book Review, The House on Foster Hill, Jaime Jo Wright
