"By now the number of how-to books about poetry is beyond count, yet there is hardly a classic among them. Packard's book qualifies." --Karl Shapiro"William Packard surely must be one of the great editors of our time." --James Dickey

Auden recounts a tale of two teachers walking through a wood in the spring. The first quotes Wordsworth:O cuckoo shall I call thee birdor but a wandering voice. The second adds:State the alternative preferredwith reasons for your choice. If the author of this skit was Housmann (so says Stephen Fry), little has changed in the century or so between our respective school days. Would-be teachers of poetry now being just as glib, just as clinical, and every bit as dull as their predecessors. The exception being that nowadays the second teacher would be read as some sort of ironic/sarcastic, self-referential postmodernist. He would though remain glib, clinical and dull, with the addition of becoming an incredible imbecile as well.Packard is no imbecile. He is droll where others are glib, expansive where they are clinical, he is intelligent, insightful and very far from dull. What he has achieved is commendable. The mechanics of a poem can be analysed and poured over and they have been by all and sundry. Those technical aspects however, can't be treated adequately in isolation from the the vision of the poem; its soul. To me this is what makes teaching poetry the most unenviable task. I know of know one who has been able to, in short, or at length, capture the essence of creating poetry, the 'art' of it, not as I understand it. Certainly not great poetry. And by that I mean simply poetry that has the power to exalt. Packard has approached this task as well as anyone. Having done so he is in rare company. Mary Oliver comes to mind. Strange that they should both be North American. Perhaps Europeans aren't quite so fearless. Or perhaps Europeans know better than to tread where angels wouldn't be caught dead?

This book is a clear, concise guide to writing and reading poetry, starting with a brief introduction of the history of poetry. The author provides explanations of devices, examples of verse forms, and writing prompts.

Just as many other 5 star reviews. Enjoyed reading this book.

Excellent book for poetry lovers, gibves nuts and bolts and beauty.

A great learning experience

Incredible. They said it was like new. It was definitely like new.

I found that this book had little to say to the 'soul' of the poet but a tremendous amount to say about the craft. I first picked this book up several years ago, and since then the chapter on 'Verse Forms' is something that has stayed with me -- whenever I wonder just what a 'sestina' or a 'villanelle' is I pick up this book. I have also found the example poems Packard uses to be unusual and therefore interesting and occasionally inspiring. It is a reference and it's not a 'feel-good' book, but it's one I value on my shelves, and which I've given to other people who want a little more discipline in their poems than free verse provides.

This book was everything I could have wanted; it is comprehensive in its listing of genres, forms, poetry devices and history, and has some good psychological pointers about the writer's life and the need to allow yourself solitude and time away from workshop madness. Its lists of books to read while writing, before writing and just plain writing literacy are superb, and its "writing challenges" (exercises for writing poems when you're stumped) are super. I'm working my way through them, day by day.

Because I consider myself a new theologian and did not grow up reading the Bible, much less pursuing theology, the title of this book appealed to me enough to buy it. And I am very glad that I did. Kelly Kapic has written a wonderful book that takes on a very deep subject which he knows a lot about. Lots of people do that, but not many are able to write about their deep subject in ways that are accessible to the rest of us who don't know as much about their subject as they do. That's an achievement for a scholar in any field. The fact that his field is theology makes this accomplishment so much more important for theology beginners like me.I grew up in the Catholic tradition, which very much leaves theology to the theologians, most of whom seemed to be priests with lots of degrees. Even after my conversion to the Baptist reformed faith, and despite having a couple of degrees myself, I at first resisted the idea that I would ever be, much less want to be in any way a theologian. But the more I read and studied the Bible and read the writings of holy men and women from across the ages and faith traditions, without realizing it I became a theology student. And not reluctantly, either, like one of those required courses you have to take to get your degree. I was actually enjoying it. Eventually I realized that if we are indeed a priesthood of all believers, then we are by definition theologians.Kelly Kapic lays out why and how this is so in a most readable fashion. Like most of the best writers in this area, his book is filled not only with passages from Scripture—both testaments, and he explains why that is important at one point—but also writers from Augustine on to the present day. Kapic has concentrated his own research on the early Puritan John Owen, so it is not surprising that he quotes him several times along with Luther and others from the Reformed tradition as well. I think, however, that any Christian of any of the three major traditions could benefit from reading this book, whether to gain new perspectives or to be reminded and refreshed in old ones. The book is divided into two parts. Part I, Why Study Theology, has three chapters. Part II, Characteristics of Faithful Theology and Theologians, has seven. This book really spoke to me in several places based on my own pilgrimage, which is one of his themes, but I think anyone who is serious about faith would find the same thing, even though every person's own particular pilgrimage is so different. This book not only spurs you to study, but to prayer as well.I own a Kindle 1100, the basic model. Not from any plan, I basically read the first half of the book on the Kindle, and the second half on my desktop using Windows 8. This Kindle edition worked well on both platforms. I really appreciated that it had good notes, but also a name and subject index, as well as a scripture index. It concluded with a short note on the author that contained a link to a short video of Professor Kapic talking about theology that I really enjoyed.I highly recommend this book. I can't help but reflect sadly that, like many a good sermon, it's the people who really need this book that will not read it.

I honestly don't see how anyone who is either starting to study theology or has studied it for decades would not benefit from reading this book. If you're just starting, it will excited and sober you at once about the task ahead, and if you're a long time theologian it will ground and refresh and challenge you anew.Starting this book, I assumed I would quickly skim through it and have heard most of it before. That did not happen. Each chapter is rich and dense (in a good way), with citations and references to theologians from a very broad (but orthodox) spectrum, both theologically and chronologically. I found this not just intellectually helpful, but also humbling: I felt very tangibly surrounded by a great "cloud of witnesses" all the way through. The chapters about personal character, service, humility, etc. were deeply challenging, and the chapters on faith/reason and history/tradition/authority very helpfully grounding.Like I said, if you study theology at any level, or are even remotely interested in it, I can't envisage a scenario where you would not be encouraged, challenged, and helpfully informed by this book. Very thankful for having been given it!

Theology, the study of God, is practiced by everyone. We all have ideas of God and so we are all theologians. As many have noted, the question is whether we are good or bad theologians. Kelly Kapic in his short book articulates a clear vision of how to study God rightly. His emphasis on a 'lived theology' underscores perhaps the most important of all lessons for a new theologian: all theology is practical. Theology is informed by the community of believers - past and present - and refined by 'doing' the Christian life, though always grounded in and tested by Holy Scripture.Perhaps the most impactful chapters were the ones on prayer and suffering/justice. Kapic reminds us in the chapter on "Prayer and Sudy" that only through prayer can we prevent theological studies from becoming cold and detached; through prayer we ensure our studies lead to a closer relationship with God as opposed to merely learning about Him.In "Suffering, Justice, and Knowing God," Kapic points us to the truth of Jeremiah 22:16 - we know God by defending the poor and needy. Our Triune God has concerned himself with a broken and sinful human race. And while salvation comes only through the work of Jesus Christ, we are all called to imitate our Creator through our concern for the helpless. Kapic keeps before us the glorious greatness of God along with His merciful nearness to creation.Whether you are new to seriously studying the one, true God or you have multiple degrees in theology, "A Little Book for New Theologians" will encourage you in, as William Perkins called it, the "science of living blessedly forever."

Packs a lot of punch for a small (121 page) book. It's a good book to get you centered at the start of seminary or after many years in the ministry. The last few chapters weren't as good as the proceeding chapters, but overall it was a good book. I especially liked the chapter on humility.

I had to order this book for a class and I have enjoyed it so much. It's a really great book for beginners in Theology. It's cute and small and I keep it on my desk. I have used it as a source for many papers.

A little slow at the start of the read; but not bad if you continue with reading. The meat and potatoes where closer to the end of the book. This was mandatory for a class and would not have been my first choice of reading.
