Wow! What an awesome book and a great find. I am a third year medical student and spend the majority of my day seeing patients in clinic, rounding in the hospital and designing treatment plans under the supervision of a resident or attending physician. Although I came into third year feeling well prepared from all of the book knowledge I acquired over the first two years in pathology and pharmacology, once you hit the wards you instantly feel overwhelmed and underequiped to deal with the hundreds of decisions even a medical student needs to make every day. Although you might pick up a new, previously undetected carotid bruit in an asymptomatic patient, do you know what the next step is? If you go ahead and order a carotid duplex ultrasound, what are you going to do when it comes back with a 50% occlusion? Consult surgery? Do nothing? These difficult decisions come up all the time and this book, 50 Studies Every Doctor Should Know, gives you the most essential studies that are the foundations for evidence based medicine. Love these books. My son, who is 9 has been reading them for a little over a year now and this book is wonderful. I must say that this one is not one of his favorites. He is a history junkey, lol. He so far seems to love the Jackie Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E Lee, What is the world series the best as a 8 and 9 year old.I also read these to him in the evenings and I really enjoy them as a 40 year old father. I have learned so much from them as well. Sometimes I read them before or after my son in order to have an educated discussion with him about the subject of the book. I really also get alot out of them as well.

I'm baffled by some comments made here by people who are disappointed that this is a children's book. "Age Range: 8 - 12 years" is clearly listed in the details listed for the book.My daughter is 5 1/2 -- too young for this book, you would think, but she stumbled onto Queen Elizabeth in one of my history magazines and began peppering me with loads of questions about her. Finally I bought and read this book aloud to my daughter, and she adores it! We must be into our third or fourth reading of it now, and her curiosity continues.That's not to detract from the age range recommendation; I think an 8-year-old would respond well to this book. The fact that it actually appeals to a 5-year-old is proof of the strong storytelling in this narrative, I think. Well done!

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.

This is my prediction for a novel of such high-caliber.Tressa Harlowe’s odd vineyard-keeping father has disappeared from their mid-1800’s castle. Sadly, the search begins not so much for him, but for the treasure rumored to have been behind.I should mention the narrative switches between first person, the rich heiress, Tressa; and third person, Donegan, the vinedresser in a class beneath her. Considering the societal differences so important at that time, this is extremelyclever of Politano.This book grasped my attention from the start and held on, like the sea and mist that surround the castle and rarely loosen their clutches on it or its land.Sadly, no matter what time period, people change very little. There are those who hear of someone else’s fortune and justify it should be theirs instead; schemers descend like vultures determined to get their share of the grand meal.Obviously, Politano is an anglophobe and describes the area, life, and characters with a poetic prose that makes them “a wonder to behold.” She is a romantic in the linguistic sense of the word.Fortunately, Politano is quite the romantic in the more common sense of the word. We see several possible romances, involving more than just the main characters. Which will thrive, and which will die, because there was no real connection?Speaking of connections, Tressa has three main interests: her father, (and the vineyard because that was his obsession); relationships, and the fortune. Politano weaves them all together in an unforgettable story of agricultural lessons for life, including the spirit, romance, and intrigue that will leave you amazed at the experience you have just sojourned.Hard to pick just a few quotes, but here are some faves:“Strength comes to the branch through connection, and that’s what I’m offering.” How Tressa needs connections in more ways than one!“It takes a harsh summer to yield abundance in the vineyards...When you feel you’re dying in the summer, all a branch needs to do is hang on.” So timely for anybody going through a rough patch!“...isn’t the sort of man I would imagine knowing much Scripture.” ‘No, ...he simply lives it out.’” We all need to live out our faith like that unnamed character!I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. (I also bought my own copy.) This did not affect my opinions in any way, nor was I required to leave a positive review.

I reviewed Joanna Davidson Politano’s debut novel Lady Jayne Disappears and adored it, so I was quite excited to get my hands on her second work, A Rumored Fortune. Also a historical Christian romance with a strong female character, this one did not disappoint – and it too features a good mystery and more than a few twists to keep you on your toes.Tressa is kind, thoughtful – and as Donegan reveals to her, naive about and sheltered from the world outside the castle in which she lives. While she lived a life of wealth and one free of material concerns – at least up until shortly after we meet her character on the page – the luster of her privileged life is dulled as we read of her childhood, and what saves her from the “poor little rich girl” stereotype is that her character is genuine, clever, and caring to those she engages with.A Rumored Fortune is a layered tale. The alleged death of Tressa’s father draws out greedy fortune hunters, and it quickly becomes obvious that some people can’t be trusted…or can they? With plenty of red herrings to make us second guess who is there for Tressa and who will try to take advantage of her, Politano also shows that people are more complicated than they appear on the surface.And there are twists! Caught up in the search for the missing fortune her father is said to have hidden, I found myself wondering if the fortune was more philosophical (was it actually Tressa, or the vineyard itself); why had her father pushed her away, and what was the mystery behind the source of his wealth; what had happened to her father; and who could she trust? The author beautifully weaves all these questions together, and as one seems on the verge of revealing itself, the story takes another turn.The author also weaves in an excellent reflection on women and marriage, and love versus necessity as a driver in this period. From Tressa’s mother and her cousin Neville’s former actress wife Ellen Langford, to her hapless ladies maid Lucy and the very cheery, generous but poor Mrs. Sullivan, her treatment of the necessity of marriage for stability versus for love is human and perceptive, and her treatment of both her mother and Ellen’s situations are insightful and much more layered than I expected – a thoughtful treat.The Christian element is much more prevalent in this novel than her last, but Tressa’s faith is as well woven into the essence of her character as it is into Donegan Vance’s, so it doesn’t feel gratuitous or preachy. A Christian myself, I’m ever leery of books where the main character prays for rescue and God responds with a billboard and fanfare and flashing lights; I like to think God sends us what we need, but it’s up to us to see it the solution in front of us, and this is one of Tressa’s strengths. She reveals that as a lonely child she had easy conversations with God, and as an adult she questions the prompts and pushes she receives in response to prayer as wishful thinking – again, something relatable as a rational, overthinking adult. If you are not overtly religious, this may make you uncomfortable, but I would encourage you to view it as part of her innate characteristics (she’s kind, she’s creative, and she’s of deep faith) as it explains much about her character and it’s development.All in all, A Rumored Fortune was a lovely stand alone mystery AND romance. For me, though, its true strength was in the character development. We watched some of the main characters grow and change and even heal; through secondary characters like Tressa’s mother and Ellen, the author made me push past the stereotypes of those who married for wealth and status by revealing the weaknesses and fears that drove them, humanizing them to where even if I couldn’t like them, I could understand them. If a book can grant you a change in perspective, even if it was unintended, that is a gift.

What a wonderful story! I thoroughly devoured Joanna Davidson Politano's latest book. Rarely do I end a book with a prayer, but following the last line of the book was a scripture verse from John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing", so I quite naturally ended with a prayer asking for help to always abide in Him. It was so nice to see the author on Facebook on release day sharing her own personal growth during the writing of this story. The lessons of the life of a vineyard corresponding to scripture was so lovely. What is not to love about the handsome Donegan, a true example of the Father's unconditional love. The story is a treasure hunt to be sure, in more ways than one! I highly recommend A Rumored Fortune!

I didn't think I could love Joanna's second book as much as I loved her first, Lady Jayne Disappears, but I did! Tressa was the kind of strong, beautiful, jump-over-a-balcony-railing Victorian heroine I love to read about. Donegan is gruff and heroic, with just enough Darcy in him to make a girl sigh. The author does a fantastic job of revealing true character throughout the story, while keeping the secrets of who and what to trust until the very end. The writing is lyrical and the story is fast-paced and full of intrigue. I highly recommend this book!I received a copy of this book from Revell and now offer my honest review.

Bought this book new because I need the codes for online access. No code came with it. Which means I am now going to have to purchase that.

Was required for an undergraduate class. While this book contained a lot of useful information, it was apparent that different parts were written by different people, and often had contradicting information.

This is one of the best finance textbooks you'll find. It's not too basic (although some of the concepts are pretty basic), and it's not too difficult. If you're an intermediate investor it'll give you a good base. If you want to get a finance job it will certainly give you a good base. Investments by bodie Kane and Marcus is a step up, and that should be your next read, although some concepts repeat. This is a must have book if you want to build a solid foundation. It's definitely a four star book.

This book is better than most of the textbooks I have had to get for my finance degree. It was used and in pretty good condition too.

Fundamentals of Investing....

I would recommend to others. I am enrolled in UVA's CFP program and this is the text being used. I thought the theories and concepts would be beyond my level but surprising the author did a nice job writing the text at a level that is easy to grasp. Off course you need some basic understanding of money, finance and accounting. Other than that the book's great.

An amazing curated collection of socially relevant social justice art education content and curriculum from the bee hive collective to an art educator using the Post Secret Project in her classroom to create an secret exchange project. I looked to this book in a difficult time at my own school when a student committed suicide and teachers were being silenced as to the self-harm aspect of his death. Students knew about it and knew that he had been relentlessly bullied. I was searching for answers as an art teacher to help my students without openly rebelling against administration, I found the answer in this last project and modeled it as a project to build empathy in my students as a way to prevent other students feeling like an island in the way that this boy had. In this way I was able to address the issues surrounding the suicide, the bullying, and all of the feelings of guilt the other students had about taunting him as well without openly defying admin. I was able to stand as a advocate and emotional support to my students because of the support that this book offered me when I needed creative ideas for social justice in a very disenfranchised community. <3

This is an interesting little book that provides a unified algorithmic presentation for more than two dozen calendars of current and historical interest. The book gives precise descriptions of each calendar and makes accurate calendar algorithms available for computer programmers. The complete workings of each calendar are described in verbage and then mathematically. Working computer programs are included in an appendix and on the accompanying CD.The one thing I didn't care for was the choice of Lisp as the implementation language in appendix B. However, this isn't too big of a problem since equivalent Java programs are on the book's website along with the Lisp implementations. Also, since the mathematical equations of conversion are clearly given, you can choose your own implementation language with few problems. The following is the table of contents:1. If you need to calculate a leap month start in a traditional Korean calendar this is a book for you. As far as I have found, this is the only source of such information, covering majority of world calendars.

In the course of building a 10,000 year clock I needed to know a lot of obscure details about various calendar systems. Calendrical Calculations not only answered all my questions, but it also introduced me to a lot of interesting information that I never would have thought to ask about. It is one of those rare books that is both an authoritative reference source and a fun read.

An excellent book on the history and workings of various calendars. But don’t use the source code! The licensing agreement is a trap. Use the code in GNU Emacs from the Free Software Foundation distributed under the General Public License. It does everything the authors code does (except for two obscure calendars) and it's free and always will be.

I am amazed by the clarity and "simplicity" of the text in the book.Calendars are not simple at all, but the approach taken by the authors makes the algorithms involved very accessible. I also appreciated the decision to focus on clarity rather then performance.

This book contains conversion routines for many of the world calendars (ancient and modern). It also contains some hisorical background. More especially, it contains excellent algorithms for the astronomical calculations needed to calculate Moon and Equinox positions needed for calendars that are Lunar or Equinox related (such as the Chinese and Original French Revolutionary Calendar). The explanation of the algorithms and descriptions of the exact details of calculation of calendars is extremely clear and well researched.Another book along the same lines is the Standard C Date/Time Library by Lance Latham which is much thicker, covers more calendars and contains more historical information of calendars origin - but lacks the astronomical calculations contained in this book by Dershowitz and Reingold.Reviewed by Ira J.
