I have now purchased probably six or so of these books. I give them to my friends who have a parent with Alzheimer's. I have given one to my dad and two to my sister because mom has Alzheimer's. It's written with compassion and reminds us that our mom or dad, spouse, sibling are still there. It's up to the rest of us to be in their world, not vice versa.

This is what you need when the disease takes over the short-term memory. They live in the moment then forget. You need to create another moment so they will be happy. I threw a birthday party for my patient in the morning. She had forgotten about it beforI got the dishes washed. I should have taken more cupcakes and repeated the party. It's also fun to have birthdays once a week. This book is fabulous because it explains the "moments" and keeps you sane.

I have one and bought this one as a gift. Great book to help us deal with people, be it loved ones or any other person, with dementia or alzheimer. Told in a way that is easy to under stand and helps the reader understand how that person might be feeling when we say certain things and they react different then we they would have before this disease set in.

Beautiful book, wonderful stories. My uncle is in a memory care unit for dementia. Someone purchased a copy which is left near the door to the unit. Whenever I visited my uncle, I would read sections of this book and enjoyed it so much I purchased a copy for myself. I loved reading it, so I shared my enthusiasm by purchasing another copy for a good friend whose husband has Alzheimer's. We are both grateful for the loving suggestions and ideas of how to better accept and deal with these devastating illnesses. Great purchase!

Good resource and is an easy/quick read. I don't agree with everything in this book but is much better advice than I've seen in other books. As someone dealing with a family member suffering with dementia, I can tell you that there aren't many really useful tools out there. But this is one I recommend.

This book is easy to read, filled with so many helpful thoughts about dealing with the difficulties of memory loss and confusion of loved ones. I've purchased 5 copies and have read the book, given it to others dealing with the same situations. This is a positive and helpful book that shows how to build happy memories in difficult times.

This book has really helped me deal with my wife's Alzheimer's disease. Although I was learning about the disease, and through trial and error, becoming better at comforting and caring for my wife, I wish I had read this book sooner. This book tells you why some people behave the way they do, but more importantly, it's a "how to" book on what to do to make things better. I think i'm getting pretty good at providing "moments of joy" not only for my wife, but also for some of the other residents of the care facility..

The writing style of this book was off-putting at first, with its excessive use of rhetorical questions and "n" in place of "and". However, I recommend ignoring that and reading it anyway, because the information it contains is both insightful and practical. The "nutty caretaker" approach is genius and truly works, and my entire family is now using it with my dad who has Alzheimers. The chapters are very short, so if you are busy you can read and digest one of them quickly between other tasks.

This book was truly amazing. I discovered this latest series, The Days of Elijah after reading through the Economic Collapse Chronicles and the Seven Cows, Ugly and Gaunt Series. I have the audio and the kindle versions of all these books and flip back and forth depending on where I am I am listening/reading. I commute a lot and Mark Goodwin has become a new favorite, discovered through Kevin Pierce - my favorite audible narrator. I knew if Kevin Pierce was reading, then it was a recommendation that I could get on board with.After putting on the first book in the Days of Elijah, I quickly realized it was a continuation from the Days of Noah - and of course went back and read/listened to that series first. I highly recommend that you read Days of Noah first, the back story is more than character development, it helps to bring you to the place in the author's narrative that began in the first.The first book in the Days of Elijah series, Apocalypse, created such a passionate and plausible cause for getting right with God, it had me re-examining my own relationship with Him. The second book has managed to push even deeper into that relationship through a compelling narrative that is both realistic and terrifying, tied closely with real advice for surviving potentially devastating or life-threatening events. It is not possible to not hear the screams in your own mind, not pray for good over evil, not picture the look of anguish or peace on the face of characters we have come to know and care for through Mark Goodwin's masterful writing. Some day it could be me, or you, or someone we care for.My only complaint with this series and the others, is I have finished them all and now have to find a new author to tide me over. Book 3 cannot come soon enough!

Many Christians may have differing views interpreting the end times. Mark provides a description of prophetic events as if they are occurring to the story's characters that capture my attention as a Christian. Kevin Pierce does an excellent job of narration and holds my attention as I drive and listen to this exciting story. The way the story ended with sort of a twist for me and left me thinking the third book will have to encompass many more events, a more global scale perhaps. At least based on my understanding of the end times. I look forward to the next installment.Some reviews refer to "Christian Preppers" as if they will be enduring these end times. A reminder: All the Christian preppers are gone at this point. The hope remains for those who are experiencing the seven seal judgments and have become Christians.

Oh to have lived in the time of the Patriarchs. The Days of Elijah continue to set the table for the second coming. Spoiler alert, if you want to know how this series ends, read the Bible. Thanks again to Mark for keeping the faith fresh and relevant as we all prepare for what plans await us as the Doomsday clock ticks down on mankind.

Absolutely Fantastic! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book series. I love that the books have a Biblical foundation. In a world that has tried to scrub out any reference to God and religion these books are a wonderful breath of fresh air. To me, the events in the stories are realistic and Revelations has been thoughtfully interpreted.I've read the entire series beginning with The Days of Noah and now I'm excitedly waiting for the next book in The Days of Elijah. I can hardly wait! You should read the books and make preparations for the Rapture. Be sure to have your heart right and be a child of God.

This book was fantastic and a great part 2 in this series (part 5 in the overall series.) I bought it on Kindle as soon as I saw I could on Amazon and started reading. All of Mark Goodwin's books are fantastic, but, I was worried this one wold leave me like the last one, on the edge of my seat waiting. It does leave you ready for book 3, but not nearly as eventful as part 1 did. Looking forward to reading the next, as well as the finale from his other series!

I don't think Mark Godwin can write a bad story. His words are so visual. I wasn't much of a reader, but my mom turned me onto "The Days of Noah" and I couldn't put the books down. I purchased my first gun, from reading this book. The one the FBI agent, Mr. Smith recommended. I then read, "The Days of Elijah" and when they meet Moses, I was just as excited and in awe as the characters in the book. "Seven Cows Ugly and Gaunt," was truly an eye opener of what the US could become if we don't bring God back into our lives. My husband thinks I'm crazy because I'm becoming a "Prepper!" There were times when I would have to remind myself that what was happening in the book, was not really happening in the world! Now I'm reading, "The Economic Collapse Chronicles" and they are just as exciting. I think if I had to do over, I would read the Chronicles first, Seven Cows Ugly and Gaunt, The days of Noah, and then the Days of Elijah last. Trust me when I say, YOU CAN NOT PUT THESE STORIES DOWN. They are fictional characters but the history of America and where it is going, as well as the Bible and God's promises to Believers and non believers is FACTUAL. The Days of Elijah takes you chapter by chapter of the Book of Revelations as well.

I have all of Mark's books- and several copies to share with others... His books are EXCELLENT from a literary perspective- great characters, exciting story lines and plot twists, and a good look at the inner thoughts and motivations of the characters... The books are also great from a practical perspective- providing rock solid advice and wisdom for those looking to be prepared... The books are also exceptional in dealing with character and the reality of God and His judgement without being "preachy"... I highly recommend him as an author- all of his series are GREAT!!!

This is the book I've been wanting Jared Wilson to write for years. I read "The Prodigal Church" a couple of times. But it was more of a "what not to do" book. It was a critique of the attractional model of church ministry. This book is a positive sequel of a more biblical alternative to the attractional model. It is the "Deep and Wide" for the gospel-centered movement.This may also be Jared's most well-written book. Jared is a fantastic writer no matter the subject. And in this book his gift really shines. While the book is laid out by subject that is typical of most church ministry books, a story of the fictional LifePoint church is interwoven throughout each chapter. The story really makes the topics discussed in each chapter come to life while not making me cringe for seeming phony.I don't agree with everything in the book. My journey has taken me from the attractional church world to the missional gospel-centered church world to now the more confessional Reformed church world (I'm still Baptist though). Therefore, I'm not as convinced as Jared when he starts getting into missional church language or even his use of Johnathan Edwards' works when it comes to measuring church health. But I get where he's coming from and agree with 90% of what he says. And I find it all very helpful when thinking about how we do church.I commend this book to anyone at any level of church ministry.

It feels like we should be done body slamming the seeker-sensitive movement. Wasn't that so 20 years ago? Unfortunately, like the undead in a bad zombie movie, it just keeps coming back. And JCW's latest critique of the movement is as readable as it is timely.Split into a fictional dialogue between a disillusioned seeker-sensitive pastor and his staff and a more traditional, how-to format, the book is accessible for people like me who don't tend to finish Christian living books. I read the first few chapters and move on (with apologies to all my favorite Christian authors). So a little liveliness goes a long way in this genre for me, and Wilson's tone and style in both formats here are a breeze to read and understand.It seems to me this book was written with practicality in mind. Yes, yes, we all know the attractional church method is bunk---but how do we pull our churches out of that mindset? I pastored a church for several years that was struggling with this very question, and it's almost funny how well Wilson's fictional bits nail the actual conversations that go on in that kind of a situation. He poses important questions and offers practical steps, rather than just dunking on the Osteens, Stanleys, and Hybels of the world without holding forth some kind of alternative.I guess the big takeaway from this book is yes, moving away from man-centered ecclesiology to God-centered is going to be awkward, difficult, and costly, but it's also going to be worth it.

Helpful, honest, insightful, and challenging. Wilson’s writing is witty and palatable. If the always prowling enemy of comparison and jealousy speaks to your mind then you will benefit from this.

This is the book I wish I had when leading our church through a gospel renewal. There's nothing new or novel here. It's not the typical "church growth" book, with 5 innovative and simple steps to break the 200 barrier. Jared simply lays out the biblical alternative to the attractional "seeker" model of church, helping the reader rediscover the biblical priorities of faithfulness and fruitfulness. It's a reminder of what the church is, who the worship service is primarily for, and that the gospel must be the driving force of all we do, rather than simply be assumed.This is a must-read that is clear, biblical, practical, and filled with wisdom. I also found the appendices particularly helpful. The first summarizes the basic principles and steps from each chapter, and the second is a troubleshooting manual of sorts with answers to many "what-if" questions related to gospel-centered ministry.The hard part will be getting pastors to read it that don’t think they need to.

Jared does a tremendous job laying out the issues plaguing the modern church but doesn't just leave it there. Instead, he offers very real and practical solutions to the church leader in how to identify the difficulty with the modern paradigm, and how to fix what's wrong. He delves into the philosophy behind church growth movements, explains the Biblical corrective, and gives the fix. This book is so needed and is a very fresh take. Very well done and very helpful!

This book is very helpful in identifying what the church is to be verses what we tend to make the church. Jareds writing makes it easy to understand. Truly timely and very very helpful. My ministry is better because of this work.

I showed this book to my gifted 4th graders and the boys who previously showed very little interest in reading immediately loved this book. They loved the dust jacket, then they took that off and loved the texture of the book cover (which is like the skin of a basketball). Thank you, Kwame Alexander, for these hooks before they even opened the book. Then they loved that it was poetry (fewer words per page..."I'm on page 32!"), and they loved the first page - maybe the best first page ever written for a boy reader.These kids were immediately sucked into the story. They loved the dynamics between the twin brothers, and the confidence of the narrator. They loved the father's pride in his son and that the father's language and taste was cheesy and dated.I can't thank the author enough for writing something that sounds so real, so relevant, so current, for boys who want to recognize themselves and their families on the page. It's not easy for an adult to write authentically for children using current language and icons that appeal to children. The boys in my group didn't know all of the basketball stars in the book - I needed to tell them who Magic Johnson was, for example - but they are a bit younger than the intended audience.

The Crossover, a Newbery Medal winner, is unusual; it’s children’s lit in the form of poetry, yet with a definite story line. It’s about a junior high school kid, Josh (a/k/a Filthy) and his parents and twin brother, Jordan (J.B.). The book centers around basketball; the twins are basketball stars, and their father was an NBA-caliber player who played briefly in Italy. Their mother is a vice principal.I'm not the intended audience for this book -- I don't particularly like basketball, I'm well past school age (by a lot), and I'm not really all that fond of poetry -- so I had reason to suspect that I might not like this book. However, I'm an omnivorous reader, and appreciate good writing of all sorts, and by the end I found that I enjoyed it a lot. I do think it’s a rather strange choice for the Newbery, although it is very creative. So it’s a very different book, but the story itself is universal. I’m glad I read it.

I read another book, IA: B.O.S.S., by a talented author, John Darryl Winston, that had some basketball content and middle-grade boy friendships that I really enjoyed. Therefore, when I came across The Crossover, it intrigued me. The talented author Kwame Alexander did not disappoint. The book contains a tight plot that encompasses family, friendship, love, health, and more. Kwame accomplishes a difficult and ambitious masterpiece by telling a story in short rhythmic verses. Kwame also does a great job capturing the essence of brotherhood between twins, Josh and Jordan Bell, mingled with the complicated dynamics of being in junior high (Jordan falls in love with Sweet Tea, and Josh wants a sip.). This is a great book for junior high kids and older. It's an easy read with a touching story. I also love the difficult vocabulary words that are introduced throughout the book.

Kwame Alexander's THE CROSSOVER (2014) is not a stereotypical basketball story. Rather, it is a universal story with educated, black characters of growing up, of family, and of love told in narrative verse (poetry). Having said that, Alexander does tackle some contemporary issues of black life: of driving while black, of the consequences for black men who do not regulate their temper, of poor diet and not seeking medical treatment. At its core, though, the story is about the love between twin brothers who think they are drifting apart as they go through puberty and the role that basketball plays in healing them through their obstacles. THE CROSSOVER is an engaging, emotional read that is ideal for those who love poetry, basketball, or may be reluctant readers.

I admit that I initially got this book because of two factors: one is that the author is a Virginia resident and the second is that the Kindle price was incredibly cheap, something that was likely done because the book won a Newbery Award. It's not a particularly long novel, but it's short length works in its favor because this is an exceedingly powerful book.The entire work is told in verse and it's beautifully done, as Alexander takes full advantage of the format to craft visually lovely free verse that truly leaps off the page. It's a book that's very much meant to be viewed, although part of me is curious to listen to the audiobook so I can experience how the narrator interpreted various portions of the book. What ultimately works best here is that the characters are all believable and best of all, there are no "bad guys" here. Even though we're really only given the perspective of one of the two brothers, it will be very easy for readers of all ages to interpret how either brother is feeling at almost any given point of the book- an element that I'm sure is going to be the focus of many, many school lectures.I can easily see this book becoming a staple of multiple classrooms and for good reason. It's amazingly well crafted and even better- it's fiction that will appeal to any age and any gender. This book deals with a lot of difficult topics, from growing up to family issues to various different things that just about every child will deal with when they're young and I whole heartedly recommend that parents read this book as well and discuss it with their children and heck, maybe even make up a few verses for themselves.

As a former librarian, I wonder what books children and young adults will read and enjoy. As the mother of a 13-year-old, I wonder what books will pull him away from his computer games. I believe that The Crossover by Keane Alexander is such a book. It is full of action and contemporary references, as well as realistic family dynamics. The poetry filled the book with movement and song; it is almost as if it gave flesh to the book. I wish there were more books with male protagonists like this in this age group. I could not put this book down. I cannot wait to share it with my son.

A factual and interesting narrative tale that preserves and presents what Tibet was like approx 100 years ago and what Tibetan Buddhism was like prior to coming to the West. Important work. Worth reading for any one interested in Buddhism, Shamanism, explorations, supernatural, travel, history, etc. Highly rated A+++

Brilliant book, I have bought about five copies. This book gives a fascinating account of Alexandra Davids-Neel's first hand experience with the Lamas, and Mystics, and Sorcerers of Tibet. I have made gift of it to friends, and a couple Professors over the years. I have it in hardback, paperback, and now for my Kindle, so it's always with my on my android phone. If you are interested in Mysticism, and the Tibetan culture, while by now means all encompassing, this is a wonderful well written book, expertly translated from the original French.

A most remarkable book relating mystical events the author personally witnessed during her years living in Tibet as a woman lama. She is always careful not to over-assert or over-interpret. These events are certainly un-explainable, from a Western perspective, but what I enjoy is the observation that from the Tibetan perspective, there is nothing miraculous or magical about it. It's just the working of an universal law, a law in which the trained mind can tap into power that are inaccessible to the rest of us. Some of these events, such as the Tumo practitioner's ability to dry wet rags sitting in the snow at 18,000 feet, has been later documented and proven scientifically. What it does leave me is there is a lot we don't know about ourselves.

This account of Alexandra David-Neel's travels through Northern India and Tibet is absolutely fascinating and I plan on reading it again, soon. Her encounters with HH the XIII Dalai Lama are insightful and provide an insider view of the apparent territorial status of the time. The title is fitting, Magic and Mystery!The book arrived quickly and in great shape, thanks to an excellent seller!

What a very informative writing of life in Tibet in the twenties. It would have been extremely brave of the author of the book to hide her identity and travel through that country unnoticed.

A truly great book

Alexandra David-Neel is a must read for anyone studying tantra in the west. She gives valuable intuitive insight into esoteric studies and its effect upon the ego and the western mind.

Great book! For those who have tasted something of the higher life, this book might motivate you further to go looking for the actual experience. I paid for the book while roaming the streets of Kathmandu. The title was enough to ring a bell.
