This is THE best book out there for biologists (and others who do data science, I'd think) who want to get up to speed in R. The book is very efficient, funny, smart, and yes, actually fun! I highly recommend using the 2017 2nd edition which is based on Harvey Wickham's packages including dplyr and ggplot2, which are more effective and easier to learn than base R, and are becoming the norm for R users. I both use R and teach it, and I've used many different books and online courses, but if you only have time for one source this should be it.

This is a great book for getting started with R. It has been been revised dramatically since the first edition and the use of Rstudio really brings the book up to date. I also enjoyed the teaching method that the authors use. They introduce new concepts and functions and then encourage experimentation and exploration more than just following along with the examples. For that reason the material is engaging and fun to work though. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is just beginning to use R or Rstudio.

This is a great book from anyone who has never opened R before to an amateur wanting to gain more skills. They walk through the chapters slowly and -if you can believe it- it's actually kind of fun to follow along. Besides buying the book, everything is free from the program to all the data sets they use (available on their website). I started this book for my Master's program and have learned more than I thought I would after just a few months by using this book.

Great introduction to R. I would highly recommend buying this edition if you already have access to the first as it teaches dplyr and ggplot2 which I found easier and powerful after trying to learn both this way and base R methods for the same tasks from a (borrowed) first edition.

For anyone who has never heard of this religion or has a passing interest, this is an ideal book, portable and easy to read and not too technical. I could have done with a bit more on theology, liturgy and religious practices but that would have made for a bulky tome which might not suit the needs of a casual observer. Jim.

While the title of this book is "An Introduction" it goes into great detail and for me, reading this book, was in fact a colorful journey into a world that, as a Christian, is startlingly familiar. My favorite chapter would have to be "The Two Existences and the Problem of Evil", where the Spiritual and Material worlds are discussed with such freshness that it is as though you are just discovering them for the first time. Clark's description of the Zoroastrian Creation Myth is also fascinating - and it is nothing like Genesis 1!

This book is, hands down, the best systematic presentation of the Zoroastrian world-picture that I've ever read. It brings together the Gathas, the priesthood, the Yasna Liturgy, cosmology, and culture to show Zoroastrianism as a living faith in all its glorious complexity. Dr. Clark does a wonderful job explaining terminology and open debates. He thoroughly documents all of his sources for those interested in digging deeper.The only flaw I found with his work was that he was, in some ways, too enamoured with his subject. Sometimes he almost loses his scholarly objectivity, especially when comparing Zoroastrianism to other living religions, Christianity in particular. One example will suffice: Late in the book he notes that Christian missionaries used "unfair" tactics in their analysis by comparing the Vendidad quite unfavorably (read the book and you'll understand) with the Gospels and arguing from that that Zoroastrians should convert to Christianity. Dr. Clark remarks something to the effect that "of course a fairer comparison would be to compare the Vendidad not with the Gospels, but with Leviticus". Actually, his desire to present Zoroastrianism in the best possible light as a viable contemporary tradition has lead him to "lose it" here. It is imminently fair and reasonable to compare the Vendidad to the Christian Gospels and not to Leviticus because Christianity (except for some real fringe groups) doesn't claim Leviticus has any normative authority over Christians in the same sense that the Zoroastrians claim the Vendidad is authoritative over them. Comparing Vendidad to Gospel *is* comparing apples to apples.Other than this and a couple other "Come on!" moments, the book was quite informative. It's refreshing to read a book by a scholar who is passionately devoted to his subject.If you would like to learn more about the Ashavan community or about the Gathic faith, this is the book to read!

Every so often I find books that I really love and Victoria Strauss’s newest Color Song is one of them. The first book Passion Blue I loved just as much. Color Song does stand on it’s own but you get a lot of background in Passion Blue that I think makes Color Song all the better. The books are classified as YA Historical Fiction and I do love YA books but I think these books are just perfect for the adult reader as well. I started Passion Blue a few days ago and was completely hooked so when I put it down I immediately dove into Color Song. What did I love so much about the book – the art, the color, the passion, the writing, the characters, and ultimately the beauty of the story itself.Giulia has been living in the convent she was forced to enter and it is there that she is allowed to do the one thing she loves above all else and that is to paint. Giulia creates beautiful art but she also carries a gift that allows her to hear the singing of the colors she creates and uses. It’s important to note that in 15th century Italy it was unheard of for a woman to be allowed to be a painter so it is only behind the convent walls that Giulia’s dream can be realized. Maestra Humilita saw Giulia’s gift and despite some obstacles has always supported her. When Maestra Humilita lays dying she she gives her Passion Blue formula to the one person she knows will honor it the most – Giulia. However in doing so also puts Giulia at risk from others who are desperate to get their hands on the Passion Blue formula as well.Giulia decides to do the only thing she can do and that’s to leave the convent. At eighteen she seemed years older in maturity and I loved her passion for art, color, and life and her willingness to risk everything to get it. The author’s writing is beautiful as she vividly describes 15th century Italy and all it’s trappings. I listened to the audiobook of Color Song which is narrated by Justine Eyre and she does a fabulous job. She has just the right tone of voice for the telling of Giulia’s story and the time just flew by listening to her. I’m really hoping for another look into Giulia’s life in the future!Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction!

I liked the general story line a lot. It really appealed to me as a woman whose tried her hand at the arts. Just a very nice story overall, very much a "feel good" book without unrealistic sex scenes, etc.

This is story every young person should be required to read. Many talents and gifts were never revealed by the people of that time and their archaic understanding of the role of women

I ordered this book after reading Jenny Han's other series To All the Boys I've Loved Before, which I loved. This book is really poor in comparison. The characters are flat and seem very cliche. I didn't feel connected to any of them or really care what happened to them at all. I usually don't mind a slow plot in novels, as long as the characters are well-drawn and engaging. But this book had almost no plot, as well as flat characters, so by the time I got to the end, I didn't care what happened. I had planned to read the whole series, but I'm so glad now I waited to order the other books. I won't be reading more.

This book was a pleasant surprise to me. I was recommended to read this back in college, and I just kept putting it off. I am not sure why, but I did not know what this was truly about and wished I picked it up sooner.I really enjoyed the characters and the plot. I am not a huge fan when stories jump from past to present, but it did not bother me too much in this one. It might have helped that I listened to the audiobook.I figured out the heartbreaking scenes from the beginning, but I still ended up tearing up during the big reveal.Overall, I really enjoyed this and will definitely pick up the next book….especially with that ending.

This book touched my heart . I've read the whole series twelve times already. The pages are filled with passion,sadness,confusion, and loss.The words are written in the perfect way to have your heart pumping and aching for the same kind of love story.You won't find any other book with the same heartwarming kind of writing.This will make your heart melt away making you hold your breath until the and , then leaves you with more emotions. I highly recommend this compassionate book to anyone with a pink heart.I love this book and ill always will.

I read this book after reading Jenny Han's "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" which I adored, but this book really flat in comparison to that one. I found it extremely shallow and to be blunt, a fairly boring story. I still finished it sure, because having read another Han novel I thought maybe there was more to come…not so much.Although it was a short, shallow, simple story it took me a few weeks to get through it just because it was dull. Nostalgia factor, eh… character quality… boring…. overall plot? Already asleep thinking about it. The kindle edition has a preview to the next book in this series, which I didn't realize was series quality, but ok I read it anyway and it was still no better than the original.I would not recommend reading this book, although I finished the book it took me awhile and I was never excited to pick it back up, rather I was excited when it was finally over!

I just want to put a disclaimer on this series to let you know if you are thinking of reading it, it will leave you feeling REALLY dissatisfied in the end. You will read all 3 books waiting for the ending that will never come...or it comes in the form of a few pages pretty much as an epilogue. The story you are waiting for and WANT to read about just happens in summary form. It's really frustrating. So be warned!!The first two books they build up one of the characters, making him seem like this amazing guy, even though you know ultimately she is attracted to the other brother. Then she finally gets with the amazing guy and everything is perfect, only for the author to completely destroy the character that you have grown to love. It REALLY made me mad. Then she pushes you to want Belly (I hate her name btw, I don't care if it's just a nickname) to go with the other guy, who in my opinion, never did anything throughout the series to ever make you want to root for as a love interest. I perhaps could have been persuaded to like said guy if them finally getting together wasn't a summary at the VERY END of the last book.But I did read all 3 books so I guess I liked them enough for that. But if I would have known how they ended, I probably wouldn't have started to read them in the first place. It's not a BAD ending, there just isn't enough of what you have (supposedly) been waiting for for THREE books. I need more than just a summary in a few pages at the end. Disappointing for sure.

I'm sorry to say I did not love this book. I gave it two stars because I did finish reading it. Otherwise I would have given it one star. The main character is so amazingly self absorbed and there is such a lack of communication between everyone. No growth in the characters….. I just kept reading thinking it was going to get better and things were going to be worked out. Or that it was going to get better and it just didn't. I just don't love books that go that route.

I loved the characters in this book and the sweetness that is Belly Fisher. I loved the descriptions of the summer house and the days that never wanted to end. I just wish it wouldn't have ending so abruptly. It's like the editor sliced it in the wrong spot or something and just wants us to read the next books. Well, I would've read them anyway, but I like my endings a little sweeter.

So I thought this was going to be so lighthearted and cutesy and then boom! It gets so real and heartbreaking and yet so beautiful. Jenny Han’s writing is impeccable and the storyline superb. And I have to note, being a Virginia girl, having my favorite rollercoaster mentioned just makes me love this author so much!

If you don’t want to know what happens, then you better not read this review. I probably would’ve given this book 5 stars, if it wasn’t for one very tragic event. Early in this book Ryan, one of the 4 original characters dies. I had always figured that one or two or even three of these characters would die at some point. But it should not have been him, especially at this stage, still relatively early in the series. He was the youngest character, and really my favorite one. I had always liked it how he had gone from being a little coward to a good strong character with a desire to serve. When he dies, it hit me so hard, I could hardly bear it. Never before in my life had a fictional story ever been so emotionally painful. This put a real scar on the series for me, and nearly ruined it. It was probably a few weeks before I was able to start reading it again.Aside from this unacceptable tragedy, most of the book is quite good. I think “Escape” would’ve been a more accurate title, because that’s what they’re usually doing. Some parts almost go on for a little too long, but it’s quite exciting.I find it interesting how the “Left Behind Kids” series often covers the various plagues of the tribulation even better than the main series does. In this book, the 2nd and 3rd Trumpet judgments (the objects falling from space) are covered quite well. In the main Left Behind series (the adult series), these events are basically just mentioned, whereas in this series they have characters who actually experience them. This makes it significantly more exciting and interesting.

Im am reading this series for the second time and I love them! The first time through though I compared the bible verses to what said in the book to make sure the authors weren't just making stuff up. These books are very incitefull as to what is coming when Jesus raptures his church. Very scary stuff. This series is a must read for everyone Christian and nonchristian alike.

Love these books. I read the adult ones for the second time last year & loved them so much I thought I’d read the kids. I like how the authors link them together using the same characters, but from the kids point of view. Awesome Biblical knowledge!

I needed a crash course into LDAP, and that book was the only one available - and for a good reason! The author, while probably a competent engineer, is a complete failure as an author / teacher. He cannot express even simple concepts. After spending a few frsutrating days with this book, I turned to other texts. Now, already understanding LDAP, I still find most of this book misleading at best. Of course, lack of editorial review did not help this book either; many places in the book don't make sense not just from technical, but also from grammatical standpoint.Don't waste your time on this one - read "Ldap: Programming Directory-Enabled Applications With Lightweight Directory Access Protocol".Or even better, simply install iPlanet LDAP server and read the documentation.

I like this book better than the other books I have seen on the subject. I liked that he uses multiple languages and gives several good implementation projects in the back. The only thing I would have liked is more alternative uses for LDAP besides the ubiqitous address book. I would like to hear of some really creative uses for this technology. Kind of like the SQL storage example, but more of these. I guess we'll have to invent some, and then version 2 of the book will be able to list more. :)

This book is too Windows centred , Not enough on Open LDAP , too much on the other versions of the LDAP servers .I was very disappointed .

I am up to page 168 of this book. So far it has been sufficiently worthwhile to read, so I plan to continue to the end. There are several good aspects as well as unfortunate ones. First the bad news, therefore leaving a better taste in ones brain.'Implementing LDAP' seems to suffer from lack of editorial review. For ex, page 163, a sentence reads "In an asynchronous operation, you might set an LDAP search running, freeing your computer is to perform other tasks(...)". The sentence needs to be corrected by removing "is". There are numerous examples of this type of mistake. Either Mark, in being the Champion he is, had to stay up way too many nights to write this book, or Wrox press did not bother to review his work. I suspect the later.Further, the work presents several different explanations on at least one term. For example, about RDNs, it explains "In general, when we talk about an RDN, we usually mean the left most part of a DN". (p 148) Yet earlier in the text, it is stated that "The DN is made up of components, each of which is called a relative distinguished name (RDN)" (p 48). These two definitions are somewhat different. I, the reader, am left to resolve this. (By doing my own editorial review ? )Yet, on a more positive note, I found this text one of the more readable, and less filled with "fluff" than other texts. One text I had attempted put me so to sleep, and was filled with how "LDAP would solve this and that and marketing people like it, and so did CEO's etc". It was one of those big door stoppers. "Implementing LDAP" does not seem to suffer as much from this. It is a worthwhile read, especially for the discount price I got it from in a NYC discount book shop (which is filled with newer texts).The above kind of thing is usually the norm in most software literature that is out there, especially by lesser known outfits. (I never have this kind of problem with O'Reilly.) With this in mind, I believe "Implementing LDAP" deserves the rating I gave it. To WROX - proofread it and I'll give it 4 out of 5.

I picked it up in the hope that it would provide me answers, which otherwise woud take me too long to ferret out by way of experimentation.Unfortunately, (and despite the numerous times Mark has answered by questions on Usenet) I must regretfully say that this book is not well written. It is the poster-child of books which are all too hastily marketed, without peer or expert review.Here are some of my specific gripes.1. Typos. Alas, after all the spell checkers and such other publishing software tools, when will a book by a computer professional, on a professional computing topic, from a technical publisher rid itself of typos? WROX Press - PLEASE read something by Academic Press, etc. Perhaps you will learn how to form a reputation for excellence.2. Articulation. I was taught in grade school that not all ways of composing a sentence are equal. The narrative in this book reeks of the writer's haste and downright dismal editorial work (if any was performed).3. Rigor. May we see precise and exact definitions for terminology? Whatever happened to brevity, closure and correctness?4. Lastly, simply put, some LDAP protocol and, particularly, JNDI features have been wrongly interpreted by the author. Parts of the JNDI chapter so confused me that I simply returned to the JavaSoft Tutirial and my own initative.With the author's reputation and good work (elsewhere), this book could have been a great and timely work. Perhaps if you employer pays for it, its not a loss to you. Just glean whatever is of value and return it to the library...I am indeed very disappointed. While they cover different aspects of the same topic, compare this book to "Understanding and Deploying LDAP Directory Services" by Howe, Smith and Good and you will see what makes a truly great book on LDAP.

Yes I guess the title states that. I am not an implementor, yet wanted to understand more about this LDAP thing as a system designer (with a strong RDBMS background). So I only read the first 3 chapters - after that the book becomes heavy-duty detail level.In summary, I found the first 3 chapters well explained, but not conceptual enough for me. It is written at a lower level, but sometimes a bit too simplistic.Still, I would recommend the book for the implementor who is a beginner at LDAP. The book is vendor independent, and you'll learn much about recent market offerings.
