My first clue should have been that this book didn't have the "Look Inside" option where you can preview the first few pages. If I had, I wouldn't have chosen it. I'm an avid reader, and as a matter of principal, I finish what I start, but honestly, it was hard. There were too many characters, too many storylines, far too much jumping back and forth. I've read other books with a similar format and it has worked, but this book, for me, simply did not. I found not one character I felt vested enough in to care about, it just felt to me that the author threw everything in to the many plotlines, including the proverbial kitchen sink, to try and make a suspenseful story, but in my humble opinion, it fell flat.

I could not put this book down... I loved the complexity of the seemingly normal characters and the slow building suspense. Although "We Were Mothers" wasn’t the first Kindle First my eyes drew to ... I am pleased I chose it. Seething with intrigue and mystery, it’s like a Liane Moriarty book - when seemingly normal people have complex lives and do unthinkable things...“We Were Mothers” is set in a leafy suburb and while at first it appears the neighbours are close... Cora and Sam; Dash and Laurel; Jade and Jeremy; Sarah and Clarke; Anna and Mira and Asher, and there's Maggie - all have complications and layer upon layers festering...Over the course of one weekend, two close families are impacted by a crisis that unveils a disturbing web of secrets And lies...You do have to concentrate and work out the characters quickly as it is told from different points of view. Building quickly with each chapter With many stories colliding... this is what makes it a great read...Katie Sise’s novel had many twists and is a good choice for those of us who love a domestic suspense novel... 4.75 StarsI am a verified purchaser in AUSTRALIA

I felt like I just read a screenplay for a really bad soap opera! It was so bad! I had to skim page after page because the dialogue and plot lines were so far fetched, it literally felt like I was in a Days of our Lives storyline. The author has potential but seriously, I feel like I wasted two days on this drivel. Skip this one!

This book! Maybe it’s because I live in a town that feels not too unlike this setting, or I’m a mom and can relate to any number of these well-written characters in different times of my life, but I could not put this book down! I lost few hours of sleep when I was reading this book because it was too suspenseful to put away for the night. Highly recommend!

Almost every single man in this book is a dirtbag. I think the detective is probably the only one who wasn't. The blurb is a little misleading, Mira doesn't disappear until the book is almost half over, so it wasn't quite the mystery novel I thought it would be. More like everyone is harboring a lot of secrets. The book is told through four POV: Cora, Sarah, Jade and Laurel. Cora is married to Sam and a mom to twin toddlers. She's very neurotic, and I had a hard time relating to her. Even when my kids were young I tended to avoid parents who demanded organic everything and "why no gluten free options?" types, I found them exhausting. I did admire her backbone when it came to Sam, she was no doormat. Sarah is Cora's mother and her husband left her for another woman. Her younger daughter Maggie died several years prior at age 22, and it has truly shattered her life. Jade was Maggie's BFF and is married to dirtbag Jeremy, who looks like a model but has little personality. He really was drawn too vague. He needed "more" to his character to be convincing. Laurel is Cora's neighbor, married to dirtbag Dash who is a surgeon. Their relationship is very odd and disturbing. Laurel's young adult daughters cause a lot of avoidable drama in the book. The book is very angsty and it does take awhile to get interesting, but when it picks up steam near the final third of the book I found it hard to put down.*Kindle First pick

Drivel. That's all that's in these women's brains. I am so fortunate not to know any of these people. This is a disgrace to women.

Halfway through this book, Sarah, a main character, thinks about her daughter Cora "she's so smart. And now she's just a mom." She believes that Cora's " lack of ambition" is related to a recent tragedy. Because lack of ambition is the only reason an intelligent woman would want to stay home with her kids. That's where it lost me. The melodrama was silly, the male characters had no nuances, whatever. But condescending to moms who are probably your target audience? Pass on this one.

I loved this book for so many reasons!! As the mom of three young children, currently living in a pretty idyllic town not dissimilar from where this riveting story unfolds, I was instantly able to relate to the setting and the characters. But that isn’t what sucked me in. This book nails it on the micro and macro level. On the micro - the details, wit and brilliant characterizations quickly had me engrossed - not only when I was reading it but in those in-between times when I was forced to put the book down to mom or wife...I started envisioning where certain characters would live as I was driving around my town or feeling like I was going to bump into one of them on the grocery line.On the macro, the twists and turns and scandals are not only gripping - but are also a reminder that you shouldn’t always buy into the perfect “instagram” and “facebook” lives of the rich and beautiful. There is a lot that hides behind the surface and thankfully in my case I was able to walk away feeling that I may actually have my sh*t together! This book was too fast of read - I can’t wait to re-read it!!
