I am a self-convicted Australian bush poetry addict, with Irish ancestry.John O'Brien (FR P J Hartigan in his day job as Parish Priest in country NSW) is not a great poet, he never claimed to be. But he draws wonderful pen pictures of bush life in the early 1900s.The Irish immigrant farmers and their Australian born offspring, who he observed with great perception, love and humour, come to life in many of the poems. Those of us who grew up in country Australia a generation of so later can still recognise many of the people and circumstances he describes, e.g the gathering of the menfolk "outside the Church, ere Mass began, one frosty Sunday morn.."....who "talked of stock, and crops, and drought, as it had done for years",If this sort of thing interests you, get it. It'll make you smile, at least.

This book is a treasure trove and will be cherished by the whole family! Though they were all enjoyable, The Trimmins on the Rosary and the Parting Rosary were my favorite poems. May God bless John O'Brien (Fr.Hartigan) and my his soul rest in peace.

For a very long time I wanted a copy of such a publication.I am more than pleased with the hardcover edition sentto me. It's a trip down Memory Lane for me, especially"The Trimmin's on the Rosary". Am enjoying the manyverses contained in this edition of "Around the Boree Log".My thanks for this.Mike Kelly,ss.cc.

"John O'Brien" produced a series of pieces of rhyming verse, many of which are reproduced in this collection. Is it great poetry? No, it is not.But as a heartfelt expression of a generation of Catholic settlers in pre-latte Australia, it is possibly without peer. He has some of the lyric quality of Henry Kendall, some of the tragedy of Lawson, some of the joie de vivre of Paterson.Certainly a book I would not like to be without!

THIS IS A VERY WELL KNOWN BOOK THAT THROUGH A SERIES OF POEMS .... CONNECTS WITH THE EARLY IRISH SETTLERSIN AUSTRALIA.I BOUGHT THE BOOK VIA AN AMAZON VENDOR ... WHO CARRIED OUT EVERY ASPECT OF THE SALE .. JUST AS AMAZON WOULDLIKE. PERFECTLY WRAPPED,IN PERFECT CONDITION AND ARRIVED VIA THE POSTAL SERVICE ... BANG ON TIME.i would not hesitate to deal with this vendor again

As a young student in a country school, our brilliant teacher Ernie Hanrahan introduced us to the poems of John O'Brien. Needless to say, we all had to learn the classic- "Said Hanrahan", which I can still say today. Who said fear was not a motivator in those days?John O'Brien was the pen name of a very astute Catholic priest, Father Pat Hartigan (1878-1952), who recorded aspects of church and Australian rural life. He is ranked among Australia's favourite bush poets."Around the Boree Log" and other verses record the life of the priest and parishioners in rural New South Wales. The fireplace was the centre of family life in the days before television, and story telling helped fill in the long hours of winter darkness. Strangers passing by were invited to stay the night and everyone sat around the log-fire yarning.Even the "Presbyt'ry Dog" gets a mention. The smart dog knows that "when it is time for a meal and goes off to the nuns".It is appropriate that the last verse is "Come, Sing Australian Songs to Me":Come, Little One, and sing to meA song our big wide land to bless,Around whose gentle parent-kneeWe've twined the flowers of kindliness. This book of verse gives a valued insight into our past and the important influence of the Irish settlers.
