This book has some good information, but I found it somewhat shallow in many respects. I was hoping for a more scholarly account. But overall the author covers a lot of territory. The breadth is there, but the depth, not so much. We are not getting "inside" these organizations as the subtitle claims, but we do get a sense of what they are about in a second-hand hearsay fashion. If you know nothing about these organizations then this book is not a bad start.

Early Christians were not admired by Roman politicians - their refusal to worship the emperor was a bit of a problem, and became a much bigger one when Christians began converting others to their point of view. Roman leaders encouraged stories of their scandalous activities, employing them as a weapon to suppress the movement. It didn't help that Christians kept to themselves, did not admit strangers to their ceremonies without the approval of a known member, and demanded new members undergo a test of faith before being admitted. On the other hand, declaring yourself to be a Christian following Christ's crucifixion was akin to signing your own death warrant. Another problem arose from Christians rescuing abandoned Roman infants left outside to die by families unable to feed them - it became assumed that, given their practice of consuming flesh and blood, gathering abandoned babies was a source of raw material for their disgusting ceremonies. That they were cared for and raised as Christians was not considered plausible. 'Incest' became another widely spread rumor about Christians - growing from their practice of referring to each other as "Brother" and "Sister." Using an instrument of torture as a symbol and identity added to Roman's initial view of Christians as a menacing secret society. The underlying precept was 'anything that is good should not be kept secret, and anything kept secret cannot be good.'In 1191, Conrad of Montferrat became King of Jerusalem, appointed by Richard the Lion-Hearted, celebrated hero of the Crusades. Conrad planned to glorify his reign by driving Muslims from the Holy Land forever. Before getting started, however, he was stabbed to death by three Muslims posing as Christian monks. Henry, Count of Champagne, hoped to become Conrad's replacement and almost immediately married Conrad's widow, hoping to inherit the title that had eluded him. Instead he was given an administrative position requiring several trips from Jerusalem into Persia. During one of those journeys, he encountered the source of Conrad's demise - the Assassins.Their actual power lasted little more than 100 years, waning with the advance of the Mongol hordes. Spiritual descendants of that group formed a small secret society that terrorizes the U.S. today - it's called Al Qaeda. The group grew out of a 7th-century schism among Muslims in 632 that produced Shiites and Sunnis. No event in any other religion, even the Christian Reformation, produced the enmity created by this division. Battles between Shiites and Sunnis usually ended in defeat for the Shiites, always outnumbered about ten to one.In the period leading up to the Crusades, individual Shiites living among Sunnis risked death upon discovery. Forced to live in a clandestine manner, they became adept at maintaining secrecy and demanding that members be totally obedient to instructions from their leaders. Two of the most significant splinter groups were the Twelvers and Ismailis. The Twelvers believed only twelve true imams (leaders) existed and the twelfth has remained alive and in hiding for the past thousand years. The Ismailis are further split into various segments including the Seveners and the Nizaris, who insist that the imams will never vanish from the earth and identify the Agha Khan as their imam. While the Twelvers are substantially larger in number than the Ismailis (90% of the current population of Iran and about 60% of Iraqis), the Ismailis have tended to be more violent in response to their minority status within a larger minority. Many secret societies and religious cults tend to be organized at the epicenter of a series of concentric circles, with ultimate power residing somewhere in the hub. From the foot of a pyramid, you can see the summit, but from anywhere within a circular organization you can never accurately measure proximity to authority. Thus, Circular organizations better conceal and protect their leadership more effectively than pyramid structures.Who are the most dangerous members of the various secret societies? According to sources claiming inner knowledge of the group's true purpose, they are Freemasons. When anyone questions this assertion, conspiracy theorists bring out an impressive array of proof, beginning with a recital of influential men through history who were undeniably associated with Masonry - including many signers of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. More recent members include Truman, Ford, Churchill, and Duke Ellington. To a few fanatic historians, almost all Masons, at the root of their achievements is a historic andlink with the Knights Templar, who began as Defenders of the Christian Faith, became the bankers of medieval Europe, and succumbed to the machinations of a greedy king and a complicitous pope. The Knights Templar safeguarded pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land and battled Islamic armies for control of Jerusalem. they obeyed rules of chivalry and asceticism, dedicating their lives to the glory of God and the protection of Christian pilgrims.During the period between 800 and 1300, European kings claimed wide authority over lands now known as France, Germany, Britain, but the countryside was effectively ruled by individual lords and barons. The lords dispensed justice, levied taxes and tolls, minted their own currency, and demanded military service from occupying citizens. Many could field larger armies than could the king. Around 1050, making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land was considered a duty for every able Christian as a means of assuaging guilt and appeasing God. In 1096 the first of nine crusades set off.Taking part in a crusade meant at least two years of travel across rugged and often hostile country. Vows of poverty, chastity and obedience not only suited their obligations to chivalrous behavior, they also were assumed to facilitate their entry into Heaven. This evolved into their receiving substantial assets from patrons, as well as booty seized from defeated Muslim fighters.Kindle Problem: When I tried to resume reading the Kindle reader requested I log in a 2nd time, then reset my current page at 0. Great gift

Amazing book......real eye opener.......

Too many duplications and no continuity from chapter to chapter.

great reading if you are in to this area

This books brings out all the grit and secrecy that has given life to these organizations. They are a link to the past but an evidence of the potential of groups willing to have a secret agenda in today's society. Based on fear and shameless promise, there will always be an attraction for some individuals' membership.

Just like the theories and history of secret societies, a little bit of truth gets exaggerated into a fish story. This author can't believe his own BS! Boring; repetitive; waste of time. Too much speculation by the author; based on theories about theories, all unsupported.

Such a sweet book with lovable characters so easy to love. I felt right at home in Strawberry Diner, cooking and sampling great country food loved by regular friendly friends and neighbors. My parents owned a similar business that I grew up in, a similar small town where everyone knew everyone else and a lot of their good and bad business. We did the simple things for entertainment that the Pick villagers did...thesmall carnivals, walks and swimming meets, rival playground games, Merry-go-rounds, cotton candy, tarts, lemon sheet cakes, coffee chats, cemetery cleaning, church choirs, charming good boyfriends, mistakes, rewards, dances, pets , bicycling, bonfires, canoing, water skiing, just everything that makes a small lake town a wonderful place to grownup and grow old in.I loved the book so much that I hated for it to end and hoped there would be another book with the same wonderful, lovable characters. I recommend this book highly for those who love the simple life and loves. CLB

I guess it started out okay. But plot points were completely abandoned and really sloppy. People literally just disappeared. It started out kinda dusty and got so saccharine so quickly it was crazy. People just fall in love and become best friends in days. Honestly, you could skip this book and be better for it. It was pretty bad.Guys I just thought about this book today and I came back to deduct a star.

This is another lovely story about the ladies that run the Strawberry Heart Diner. Nettie and Vicky own the diner together and are needing a waitress. When Nancie drives into Pick to visit her grandma's grave. Deciding to stop at the diner before heading to Louisiana, as she pulls into the driveway her car catches on fire. She remembers the two ladies who rush out to help her and the two men who put her car fire out from when she had lived in Pick. The ladies gave a job and a place to stay and the story just keeps getting better from there to the very end.Miss Carolyn has done it again. I haven't found a story of hers yet that I haven't enjoyed immensely. Thank you.

The Strawberry Hearts Diner was written by Carolyn Brown. Carolyn does a magnificent job of telling this story. She has taken the idea of a small town like the one she lives in and created the wonderful town of Pick. This town is small but everyone pulls together when it is for the best of the people. I love the idea of the two churches getting together and having church school at different times so all the kids can attend both of them during the summer. The closeness of the townspeople is shown when Carlton Wolfe comes to town trying to purchase land to build houses. The town closes ranks and rebuffs him with spirit and fun.Once you get into the book and get to know Emily, Vicky, Nettie, and Jancy, you are hooked and must continue to read to find out what happens to them. Jancy doesn’t think she is worth their getting to know but feels some responsibility to do the best job she can while she is there. I got teary eyed when she read the letters left for her by her own mother. This is definitely one of the better books by Carolyn Brown. It is difficult to wait for her next book to come out.

Nettie and Vicky own the Strawberry Hearts Diner famous for its strawberry tarts of which only two can leave uneaten from the diner with any customer...no exceptions!! Vicky believe that luck, whether good or bad happens in threes every summer. According to Vicky, it is mostly bad luck.Jancy, who has had her own string of bad luck, just wants to get out of Pick, Texas and make it to Louisiana where she can live with her cousin and hopefully start life over again. This time with a measure of good luck on her side. Unfortunately, or rather, fortunately, Jancy's car decides to go up in flames in the parking lot of the Strawberry Hearts Diner. Nettie and Vicky see an opportunity to hire an extra waitress for the summer and offer Jancy a job. With no car, no job, no place to live and only $16 to her name Jancy accepts the job. Vicky and Nettie also offer to let Jancy stay at their house next to the diner since she doesn't have a place to stay. All Jancy wants to do is to stay a few weeks to save some money to get out of Pick, Texas! Memories of when Jancy lived in Pick for several years while in high school were enough to last a lifetime.Emily, Vicky's daughter will be returning from college in a few days and will be helping out in the diner for the summer. Jancy isn't excited about working or living with Emily, as she always felt like she wasn't as good as Emily. This summer will be a season of growth for Vicky, Emily, and Jancy. All four women create an exceptional bond and learn that sometimes bad luck can actually be good luck!I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were all very likable and charming and I found myself getting caught up in each of their stories. The wise Nettie who was the mother to Vicky; Vicky raising Emily as a single parent wanting the best for her daughter; Emily wanting to be the pleaser but also wanting to be herself and guide her life in the direction she thinks is best; and Jancy, the girl who moved around a lot and never felt adequate. This is a story about family, growth, acceptance, and love. There is no cliffhanger but I do hope there is another book explores Vicky's upcoming new life and the changes in store for Emily and Jancy.I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Enjoyable. Carolyn Brown writes an easy to follow stand-alone that the reader does not want to end.No graphic violence, drag-you-down drama or in your face religion. The storylines are believable. The characters are realistic with distinct personalities and emotions.Thought-provoking, informative and humorous dialogue.'According to the sermon that night, God worked things out. Whether folks liked it or not was up to them. They could be bitter or they could be better. Bitter had the letter I in it, and every single time people put themselves first, it became a problem that created a bitter attitude.'I may re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.
