Such a sweet book with lovable characters so easy to love. I felt right at home in Strawberry Diner, cooking and sampling great country food loved by regular friendly friends and neighbors. My parents owned a similar business that I grew up in, a similar small town where everyone knew everyone else and a lot of their good and bad business. We did the simple things for entertainment that the Pick villagers did...thesmall carnivals, walks and swimming meets, rival playground games, Merry-go-rounds, cotton candy, tarts, lemon sheet cakes, coffee chats, cemetery cleaning, church choirs, charming good boyfriends, mistakes, rewards, dances, pets , bicycling, bonfires, canoing, water skiing, just everything that makes a small lake town a wonderful place to grownup and grow old in.I loved the book so much that I hated for it to end and hoped there would be another book with the same wonderful, lovable characters. I recommend this book highly for those who love the simple life and loves. CLB
I guess it started out okay. But plot points were completely abandoned and really sloppy. People literally just disappeared. It started out kinda dusty and got so saccharine so quickly it was crazy. People just fall in love and become best friends in days. Honestly, you could skip this book and be better for it. It was pretty bad.Guys I just thought about this book today and I came back to deduct a star.
This is another lovely story about the ladies that run the Strawberry Heart Diner. Nettie and Vicky own the diner together and are needing a waitress. When Nancie drives into Pick to visit her grandma's grave. Deciding to stop at the diner before heading to Louisiana, as she pulls into the driveway her car catches on fire. She remembers the two ladies who rush out to help her and the two men who put her car fire out from when she had lived in Pick. The ladies gave a job and a place to stay and the story just keeps getting better from there to the very end.Miss Carolyn has done it again. I haven't found a story of hers yet that I haven't enjoyed immensely. Thank you.
The Strawberry Hearts Diner was written by Carolyn Brown. Carolyn does a magnificent job of telling this story. She has taken the idea of a small town like the one she lives in and created the wonderful town of Pick. This town is small but everyone pulls together when it is for the best of the people. I love the idea of the two churches getting together and having church school at different times so all the kids can attend both of them during the summer. The closeness of the townspeople is shown when Carlton Wolfe comes to town trying to purchase land to build houses. The town closes ranks and rebuffs him with spirit and fun.Once you get into the book and get to know Emily, Vicky, Nettie, and Jancy, you are hooked and must continue to read to find out what happens to them. Jancy doesn’t think she is worth their getting to know but feels some responsibility to do the best job she can while she is there. I got teary eyed when she read the letters left for her by her own mother. This is definitely one of the better books by Carolyn Brown. It is difficult to wait for her next book to come out.
Nettie and Vicky own the Strawberry Hearts Diner famous for its strawberry tarts of which only two can leave uneaten from the diner with any customer...no exceptions!! Vicky believe that luck, whether good or bad happens in threes every summer. According to Vicky, it is mostly bad luck.Jancy, who has had her own string of bad luck, just wants to get out of Pick, Texas and make it to Louisiana where she can live with her cousin and hopefully start life over again. This time with a measure of good luck on her side. Unfortunately, or rather, fortunately, Jancy's car decides to go up in flames in the parking lot of the Strawberry Hearts Diner. Nettie and Vicky see an opportunity to hire an extra waitress for the summer and offer Jancy a job. With no car, no job, no place to live and only $16 to her name Jancy accepts the job. Vicky and Nettie also offer to let Jancy stay at their house next to the diner since she doesn't have a place to stay. All Jancy wants to do is to stay a few weeks to save some money to get out of Pick, Texas! Memories of when Jancy lived in Pick for several years while in high school were enough to last a lifetime.Emily, Vicky's daughter will be returning from college in a few days and will be helping out in the diner for the summer. Jancy isn't excited about working or living with Emily, as she always felt like she wasn't as good as Emily. This summer will be a season of growth for Vicky, Emily, and Jancy. All four women create an exceptional bond and learn that sometimes bad luck can actually be good luck!I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were all very likable and charming and I found myself getting caught up in each of their stories. The wise Nettie who was the mother to Vicky; Vicky raising Emily as a single parent wanting the best for her daughter; Emily wanting to be the pleaser but also wanting to be herself and guide her life in the direction she thinks is best; and Jancy, the girl who moved around a lot and never felt adequate. This is a story about family, growth, acceptance, and love. There is no cliffhanger but I do hope there is another book explores Vicky's upcoming new life and the changes in store for Emily and Jancy.I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
Enjoyable. Carolyn Brown writes an easy to follow stand-alone that the reader does not want to end.No graphic violence, drag-you-down drama or in your face religion. The storylines are believable. The characters are realistic with distinct personalities and emotions.Thought-provoking, informative and humorous dialogue.'According to the sermon that night, God worked things out. Whether folks liked it or not was up to them. They could be bitter or they could be better. Bitter had the letter I in it, and every single time people put themselves first, it became a problem that created a bitter attitude.'I may re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.
