Well! Ernest Dempsey has decided to shake things up in a huge way and no character is left untouched. That's all I'll say (no spoilers here). Our story begins with a puzzling find by an Australian museum curator. When she contacts archeologist Tommy Schultz for help, he and his best friend and sometime-Axis operative Sean Wyatt head for the Australian Outback, along with Sean's lover and art expert Adriana Villa. They are following clues to what may be a mystical Aborigine relic being hunted by a nefarious billionaire oil executive who plans to use it for his own gain. Mr. Holmes, the billionaire, will stop at nothing to obtain the relic.In addition to a strong plot with cruel, devious twists, the reader is given a great tour of major places in the Outback and a few very colorful characters who embody the Aussie spirit. It makes you want to book a trip for your next vacation. But when you do go, please don't order a Foster's to go with your shrimp on the barbie (read the book to get the joke).Thanks, Mr. Dempsey, for giving us all a punch to the gut with this book.
Maybe one for teenagers? Cheesey dialogue, cardboard cut out characters, ridiculous plotlines .. I am Australian and happen to be in Uluru where some of the book is set and it is pretty hard to be fully involved in the story when the writing about the area and culture is so inaccurate. A lot of the Aussie lingo is off the mark and it is obvious the author has not actually been here and his research has been only cursory. For example when his very experienced adventurers are at a time critical part of their treasure hunting expedition and are also desperate for rest, they book a hotel 6 hours away from the site!!! It obviously looks close on the map if you are an outsider but Australia is a very very large place - it made me laugh but I didn't want to read this book for comedy value. It's a bit like watching a movie where the actors just haven't got the right accents - all just a bit off putting!
I've enjoyed the Sean Wyatt books, but this one left me a little disappointed. The presentation of Aboriginal art did make me curious to know more and I googled a few interesting articles. Overall, the suspense was mitigated because I had it in the back of my mind that no one was gonna die or even be injured - even when gunshot. I like the Sean Wyatt character, but he is the only one developed to a point of richness & connect. And Tommy is turning into more of a buffoon with money than a real person with valuable historical/archeological information source as well as a wallet.I already have The Excalibur Key and am looking forward to reading it as soon as I'm done with this review - I hope it gets a bit grittier and characters around Sean get more richly developed.
The Uluru Code is bursting with his most colorful characters. Their antics, coupled with the danger that comes rolling out of almost every page really keep this novel moving. Then, you have the fascinating lore of the Aboriginal Australians. It's all about Didgeridoo sounds, secret artifacts, cave art, a golden boomerang. Absolutely fascinating to this reader. In fact, I was inspired to do some research concerning the ancient Aboriginal people. It amazed me to know they are likely the oldest race of humans on this planet.Just as the European settlers who came to America, the British arrived in Australia and had their effect on the indigenous people living there. This novel just brings some of this history to life and I loved reading the story set in this environment. It was rich and full of mysterious places. You could feel the magic that permeates the land and its people. I am grateful to Ernest Dempsey for giving us this beautifully written novel.
The Uluru CodeBy Ernest DempsI’m not going to waste a lot of my time here or yours. I found this book to be fairly silly if you’re looking for anything believable. In the first 15% of the book, an Australian man who is at home gets his house shot up by the bad guys but no scratches on him. There is a commercial lab building blown up somewhere in the US but the 2 people who are suppose to be working there, just happen to step out for a coffee. So no one is hurt there either. (Curses, foiled again!) And finally the guy who owns the building is flying off to Australia just a few hours after the explosion. C’mon, I think I could do better than that. I quit at page 68 because I didn’t want to waste anymore of my time on a book with such a weak story. I’m surprised at all the stars it got in the reviews. Not what it appears to me anyways. Sorry Mr. Demps.
Ernest Dempsey's Sean Wyatt series just keeps getting better and better, and having my three favorites together again was so, so good. This book takes place mostly in Australia, which I really want to visit someday, but with the wonderful writing and descriptions, I felt I was there. I laughed at Sean and Tommy as they indulged in their hilarious antics, and I also cried at one point, but I won't give away any spoilers, except to say that, at that point, I repeatedly mumbled "Oh no!" There was non-stop, edge-of-my-seat action that left me wishing for more, and I can't wait till the next book in the series. This book is incredible, and I can't praise it enough. Do yourself a favor and buy this book, and you will instantly become a fan! The only drawback? If this is your first Sean Wyatt book, you will probably have to go back and get them all - but what an adventure you will start upon!
Sean, Tommy, and Adrianna go down under in another exciting adventure. This time they are going to visit an Aussie acquaintance of Tommy's and get pulled into an adventure looking for the Golden Boomerang before a corrupt billionaire can get his hands on it.This is classic Ernest Dempsey at his best. From page one I was immersed in an exciting adventure through Austraillia's outback. I also love the author's notes at the end on the story and the background the notes give. Thank you Mr. Dempsey for sharing your wonderful talent with us! Keep the adventures coming!
