About the Author
Rand Richards is a San Francisco-based historian, author, and lecturer. Two of his books are local bestsellers: Historic San Francisco: A Concise History and Guide and Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City's Past. He has lectured before many groups, including the California Historical Society, the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, and the San Francisco History Association. The latter organization recently awarded him their Oscar Lewis Award for his contributions to knowledge of San Francisco history.

Though intended as a guidebook for travelers, this volume would be (and was for me) equally useful in historical research: for each of the hundreds of buildings he observes, Richards provides a date of construction and/or use--precise when available, approximate otherwise, including dates of buildings that were once on that site but no longer are. Thus by using it you can begin to get an idea of what was in the city at any approximate time you want to know about. Each walk includes a street map, and there are many bw photos (albeit mostly rather small) and various brief essays about notable Franciscans ranging from Donaldina Cameron (savior of Chinese slave-girls) to Janis Joplin.
This book provides 18 mapped walks through different neighborhoods in San Francisco, focusing on the history of the city, each walk taking about one to two hours, each one accompanied by detailed stories keyed to specific buildings or sites. For instance, the walk through Chinatown takes you to some of the tiny alleyways that used to be entrances to the innumerable bordellos in the region before the 1906 earthquake, along with the still functioning "Tin How" temple up three flights of stairs. This book is not to be confused with a guide to places to eat and so on. Obviously it's only going to be useful to those who are willing and able to spend many hours discovering the city. But if you're interested in seeing and learning about the historical background to this great city, it's hard to imagine how this book could be beat.
Interesting and detailed. The book has fair maps and good detail. While not mediocre, the book may be beyond many with a more casual eye to see the city and the tours would best be made on a second trip or a prolonged one, if at all. Many have details that are related to areas not on the beaten path of common tours, at least of the top 10-20 sites. For most, this book is not either necessary or useful, but for those with a desire for depth of knowledge it is a good source of information.
This is the best walking tour book that you do on your own. I've purchases 4 copies now and give them to everyone I know who comes to live in the city. Beware the tour of Civic Center, you really don't want to be distracted and reading a book in the Tenderloin district (currently the roughest area in SF) which is where it ends. China Town tour was mind blowing.
A Fantastic guide for walking in San Francisco. This book has very clear text and directions to tour the city. Be warned San Francisco is a city made up of hills. The guide warns you where they are and how difficult each walk is and an estimate of time for the walking, I found those off only because it points out interesting spots that you will want to take a little while to explore so I would add at least 20 minutes to each tour at least to enjoy the places that are pointed out. Just an Excellent guide.
Great book for walking my beautiful city.
I recently moved to SF, and this book has become my handy guide, helping me explore different areas of the city that not even a lo of locals are aware of. Easy to follow and very interesting - if you are going to be in SF, try a self guided tour or two on your own with this gem
