"Studio Anywhere" is a great guide for photographers who want to improve the quality of their images without needing a ton of expensive gear or a permanent studio location. I really enjoyed the book, the author is very specific about how he lit each example picture, even including screenshots of Lightroom settings of how he color graded the pictures and fixed problems. The author covers many different scenarios: low-key portraits, bright and dark product shots, shooting with water, bright sky and dark night portraits... always in tight spots with minimal gear. Keep in mind the author really likes hard light, like rock-hard light from an unmodified speedlight. If you're a fan of soft, subtle lighting, you might not like all of his photos.A few nitpicks: The author frequently refers to speedlights as "bare-bulb strobes". Speedlights have lenses and mirrors that enable their features, they are not bare-bulb strobes. I think he just means "bare flash", meaning no modifier was used. Also he makes a big deal about how superior Neutral Density filters are to High-Speed Sync modes on speedlights, but he compares the two unfairly to make ND filters sound wonderful and HSS sound terrible, using different exposure settings for the two tests. HSS costs about two stops of power, if you put a two-stop ND filter in front of your lens, you will also need an additional two stops of flash power. Anyway, I'm just saying ND filters are not some magical solution to flash sync problems, using them requires more flash power just like HSS does, and ND filters make it harder to change lenses, since you also have to change filters when you do, possibly requiring multiple filters for different size lenses, step-up rings, etc. HSS just works. So, if you're looking for a collection of practical tips for using the world as your studio to take great pictures, "Studio Anywhere" is highly recommended!

I'll be honest. I enjoyed this book the first time I read it, but really considered it only about 1/2 good, since it includes a lot of Lightroom examples and I don't use Lightroom. While the content I read was good and felt it was worth the money, I just considered it a good solid book, but not a standout. However, as I've had this for a few years I continue to gain new knowledge every time I pick it up. For example, Nick's gear is simple, but does the job. It's a clear example of how little you really need to do professional work. Anytime you find yourself "Needing" more photo gear, take a look at Nick's gear and you may find you have more than enough gear to do excellent photography. Then there are the examples. As I grow as a photographer different chapters appeal to me. Nick covers people and products...and those have had different appeal to me at different times. However, whichever subject I find myself interested at the time, I find Nick's book to have something to help me grow in that area. And then there's the extensive Lightroom examples. I haven't made it to using Lightroom yet, however I have now found that I can at least apply many of his principals to my work in Rawtherapee. And once I make it to using Lightroom, I'll bet I can appreciate those even more.I've found myself with the opportunity to have a very small photo studio in my home, and with Nick's book I'm extremely confident that I'll be able to put even that small space to great use.To me, this book has great appeal to someone who may wish to start a photography business. It doesn't cover the travel/landscape/artsy photography. But it DOES cover topics that would be the bread & butter to someone who would like to bring in some money through photography. It covers a lot of corporate type shooting, along with product and portrait photography.I don't usually write reviews...but found myself referencing this book over and over for the past two years...it's good stuff!

The idea behind this book is great - you really don't "need" a studio. However, I am a little disappointed how much the author relies on using "post" to make up for lack of lighting, when in many of examples it would have been easy/possible to add another flash. Obviously we'd all like to not have to carry around that little bit extra gear, but it just seems to go against the whole concept that we do 90% of our shots without a studio. We are not talking run and gun here, we're talking posed sittings, which may or may not have time pressures and baggage allowance issues. On the whole the guidelines and ideas are great, but I do feel the heavy reliance on "Lightroom" to fix what we didn't get on set, is a little off-putting.

Yes, some of this SHOULD be obvious to anyone that has held a camera for a few years...but it's still a good read.Yes, some of this might indeed make you say, "Well, duh." And feel all smug about yourself. And yes, some of this might make you say, "D'oh!" And feel embarrassed that you hadn't figured that out yourself. All in all I think it's a good book.I think it's good for those just starting out, for those with a full studio as a way to see things differently, and for those that HAD a studio ;-) but are looking for ways to make it work without one.

this is one amazing gem of a book about portraiture photography. the author of this wonderful book is extremely talented and knows how to explain it and explain it well he did! I like the style of this book. its like reading a diary/blog and you can see how a professional photographer thinks and works with lighting on various locations with limited budget. this is without a doubt one of the best books that explain working with lighting which is a bit complicated for beginners. also the post-processing tips on Lightroom is quite insightful.I'm glad that I bought this book and I would recommend it to friends and serious armature photographers.

The Trouser People: A Story of Burma in the Shadow of the Empire, by Andrew Marshall

Amazon.com Review

In The Trouser People, Andrew Marshall recounts his ambitious crisscrossing of contemporary Burma, which emerges as isolated, heartbreaking, fitfully resilient, and, to Western eyes, certainly, often exotically unfathomable. Marshall's compass is the life of a now-obscure Victorian adventurer, Sir George Scott. He draws distinct parallels between British imperialism and Burma's crushing, present-day military dictatorship. But The Trouser People is less analysis than witty, candid travelogue, highlighted by excursions into the remote territory of some of the country's many ethnic minorities. Most fascinating among these are the Wa, former headhunters who now control much of Burma's drug trade. Through their territory Marshall tramps in search of a mysterious lake, whose waters, Wa myth has it, were their birthplace. This muscular, anecdotal narrative, by centering on individuals and the quotidian complexities of Burmese life, washes a country too often capsulized in black and white into bright color. --H. O'Billovitch

From Publishers Weekly

Beginning with an unusual Burmese monk who keeps a cell phone in his robes and negotiates with Thai border police regarding arms smuggled to the insurgent army fighting Burma's military regime, Marshall recounts his adventures in Burma over a five-year period, inspired by the diaries of late-19th-century Scottish adventurer Sir George Scott (The Burman). Scott furthered the interests of the British colonials (aka the trouser people) by mapping and photographing remote areas of Burma. As Marshall, chief Asian correspondent for British Esquire and coauthor of The Cult at the End of the World, follows in Scott's footsteps, he provides an informed history and his own observations of a country where most people "have never known true peace or true freedom." Burma is ruled by a brutal military dictatorship, and its democracy movement is symbolized by the house arrest in Rangoon of Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi. Marshall retraces Scott's steps from Rangoon to Mandalay in 1880, when the despotic rule of King Thibaw, a reign that mirrors current political conditions, was coming to an end. All of the author's adventures will hold readers' interest, but his difficult journeys to tribal villages of the Shan Plateau, through drug-trafficking territory where head-hunting only ended in the 1970s, are particularly enthralling. Although Marshall's sardonic humor may not appeal to all, this is a valuable firsthand look at areas and living conditions in a country relatively unknown in the West. Avid readers of travel literature will love it. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

A great book about tragic events in a beautiful country. The author shadows the travels and travails of Victorian adventurer/administrator, George Scott. The result is a narrative that is readable and engrossing. Marshall presents a wealth of historical material in a relatively short volume (quite unlike the typical contemporary non-fiction book). He is at his weakest when he romanticizes Scott's relationship with the locals in Burma and skirts the excesses of colonial rule. He also neglects Scott's more patronizing and condescending writings about the people of Burma. On the other hand, Marshall presents a very readable account of comtemporary history in the country and a credible portarait of the current regime.I have visited Burma in the past few years and Marshall's descriptions of people and places were quite evocative of what I saw. Hopefully, the same will be true for other readers, regardless of whether they have traveled there or not.

I picked up several books to read on my Kindle while traveling to Burma in December, 2013. I was with a tour group, which is basically how you have to go at this point, and our first stop was at the Scott Market in Yangoon. This book is based on the author's fascination with George Scott, who was an eccentric mixture of colonial and ethnographic fervor. The author tells us a lot about Scott and then leads us in Scott's footsteps through Myanmar of recent years. Things are changing so fast that a book published even a few years ago is somewhat out of date, but the stories Marshall tells feel very contemporary. It was the most valuable book for the trip.

The short of my opinion on this book is that if you are curious about Burma,(or think you could be curious) then buy this book. The writing is superb, the author has an exceptional capacity for observation and an endearing personality, the book is very dense(yet fun) on the score of interesting facts, and the basic conception is very imaginative. I admit that I've not read any other books on Burma, and only a few other travelogues, but regardless, - and I mean this in the most objective sense possible - this book is d*mnd good! Some of this has undoubtedly been included in other reviews, but... The whole structure of the book is woven around the travels through Burma of two people, the author and a 19-th century Victorian goomba, George Scott. Having two parallel story threads roughly a century apart, I felt, did a lot to put things in persective, and at times really set my imagination on fire. Reading one page, I'm(armchair-wise) traveling with the author to a distant, intriguing village high up in some beautifully forested and rice-terraced hills; on another page I get to read about some Shan chief who, killed by the British, was boiled into some kind of goo by Shan rivals and decanted into vials which were sold as potions for bravery; on another I'm wondering if the author is going to be beaten by soldiers and dumped in the fog-ensnared mud while undertaking some foolhardy quest in a northern Wa drug state, trying to find a mythical lake; and on another I get to witness George Scott defuse the mistrust of a xenophobic Wa village, armed with nothing but a sense of humor that apparently transcended culture. And interwoven with all these wonderful, exotic stories, are many facts, historical and contemporary, on various customs, superstitions, political circumstances, human rights violations, and on every other matter of conceivable relevance. Such as the efflorescence of soccer in Burma in the 19-th century, for example. In summation, the author has a sharp eye for detail, the ability to make very intelligent writing, a sense of adventure and an abundance of curiosity, and the wit and passion to put it all together into a very satisfying read, and this he has done.

This is not an even-handed scholarly study of Burma -- thank goodness. It moves along just like a journey, in fits and starts, pausing here, rushing there.Focusing on Sir George Scott, British Empire-builder of a hundred years ago, Marshall paints a vivid picture of Burma today. His writing is extraordinarily full of life, leading the reader from sympathy to outrage, from suspense to laughter. This is not a book you want to give to someone recuperating from surgery: Marshall is one of the funniest writers I have ever read, and would play havoc on surgical stitches. One point I would like to debate: his discussion of the Kayan/Padaung families working for the Hupin Hotel in Yawnghwe/Nyaungshwe. I know the family that runs the Hupin personally -- several branches of the clan, actually, and count several of the staff among my friends. Yes, they are not running the hotel for their health, and yes, they are making a profit, but in all sincerity, I do not think their dealings with the Kayan are as heartless as Marshall depicts. There are two families of Kayan by Inle Lake. Marshall met the ones hired by the Hupin, not those moved in by the government. The Hupin went into the mountains and made a deal with the family: they would build a house for them, give the men jobs in factories around Yawnghwe, the women would work for the hotel, and the kids would go to school at Hupin's expense. They are paid monthly salaries and medical expenses, and any weddings and what-not are paid for by the Hupin. Some of the children have reached high school, and are still going strong. Few children in the countryside get so much schooling. One little girl envied all the attention her big sister got from tourists because of the rings on her neck. The little girl raised such a fuss that her parents agreed to let her have rings on her neck, even though she had not reached the traditional age for that. BTW: she refuses to go to school. The price for a photo with the Padaung is US$3: this is split 3 ways, between the guide, the hotel, and the Padaung (US$1 is a good day's wage for someone working in Yangon, a week's salary for the countryside.) The Padaung are free to go back to Kayah state. When they go, they bring handicrafts back to the hotel, which they sell to tourists; this money goes into their own pockets. My friends from the Hupin asked the Kayan to lower the price of the bracelets I was buying, and let me tell you, it was a struggle! These are not listless zombies meekly obeying a master's wishes.Marshall describes a concrete compound. I am not sure what he is talking about, unless it is the area outside their compound, beyond the bamboo bridge. Their wooden house was built Kayan style, in accordance with their specific wishes. They are an extremely conservative tribe. Marshall makes much of the women not leaving their compound. The Padaung are shy people, and the women do not speak Burmese, so they are not willing to range far. Also, I have heard from separate, unrelated sources that there is a danger for Padaung women to roam, because there have been cases of their being -- not exactly kidnapped, but taken off for show in Europe.Marshall says "the hotel staff member broke into a practiced spiel." We may not be talking about the same man, I did not speak English with the Padaung man I went with, but I suspect the "practiced spiel" may be memorized word for word by someone who speaks minimal English, and may not have confidence in leaving the beaten path.I deeply feel that the Hupin is more than fair in its dealings with its staff, whether they be Burman, Shan, Chinese, Kayan, or others. When I told the Hupin family what Marshall had written about them, they were quite hurt. Frankly, they are making enough money from tourists, they do not feel the need to exploit the workers. Marshall went to Burma expecting to see the disadvantaged being exploited, so when he saw the disadvantaged, he assumed they must be getting exploited. In the case of the Hupin, I can vouch that he was wrong. All in all, though, this is an excellent picture of Burma, including parts most of us will never see. I hope Marshall is hard at work on his next book. This is an author to keep an eye on.

Mengzi: With Selections from Traditional Commentaries (Hackett Classics)

Review

The Mengzi is one of the richest philosophical texts in classical Chinese philosophy, and Van Norden's translation is among the few that do it justice. His translation is further distinguished by its accessibility and is unique in including substantial selections from later commentaries. As such it is both an essential scholarly resource and a great introduction to Confucian thought.--Justin Tiwald, San Francisco State UniversityBryan W. Van Norden accomplishes two impressive feats in this important new translation of Mengzi (Mencius). First, he presents the text in a traditional fashion, with indispensable commentary interwoven into--yet always clearly distinct from—the text. This opens up the text to modern readers as never before in a translation. Second, he both lets us hear the voice of the text's greatest commentator (Zhu Xi from the twelfth century) and gives us a translation faithful to the text's original time and philosophy. The supple balance with which Van Norden pulls this off makes this translation perfect for students, general readers, and scholars alike.--Stephen Angle, Wesleyan UniversityThis is the most accurate, readable, and philosophically revealing version of the Mengzi available. It has the added virtue of a running commentary that weaves together Zhu Xi's explanation of Mengzi's thought with Van Norden's exposition and insights and his selected bibliographies. The inclusion of Zhu Xi's comments allows readers to appreciate more fully not only the depth of Mengzi's original vision but also its power to inspire creative interpretation by one of the greatest minds of the neo-Confucian period. The result is a magnificent work that brings the study and understanding of Mengzi's philosophy to an unprecedented and most impressive level of rigor, sophistication, and interest.--Philip J. Ivanhoe, City University of Hong Kong

There is no need to repeat all of the positives stated in the product review above. It is a very solid translation, probably the best available in contemporary English. I have four minor concerns.First, the translator adds his own commentary to the passages--and while this is mostly a good addition for the reader, sometimes he writes things like "It's a shame the Chinese Marxists didn't study this point" or the throwaway, " A very profound passage indeed!" I find such moments to be both insightful and distracting. They are insightful because it gives you a view into your translator--his prejudices, his need to always "be" in the text--and knowing things like this can help you weigh his presence as a translator, help you understand how he might be inclined to interpret if not slightly skew context, meaning, etc. They are distracting because, frankly, when reading Mengzi, you don't really want to read the translator, you don't really want to be told when a passage is profound for the translator or anyone else. And, say, if you're an expert on Chinese Marxism and the translator isn't, you might find his comments like the one noted above to be rather half-witted.The second concern is that the translator does not reference the Hackett edition of Kongzi's Analects. I understand that the translator can do his own translations, but there are some irksome little discrepancies between how he references Kongzi and how Slingerhand translates the same passages in the Hackett Analects edition. The third concern is that the translator believes he can deftly differentiate the true, original meaning of the text from deviances found in the Neo-Confucian tradition. This poses us with several additional concerns, two worth mentioning: a) those with an understanding of Gadamerian hermeneutics would, perhaps, be a little more demure and less likely to assert such a claim; and b) the translator assumes he starts with a pure, uncontaminated, original (sacred?) text. In all, these concerns can lead the reader to a false sense of confidence that for some, no doubt, will prove to be somewhat "Orientalist."The fourth concern is barely worth mentioning, but I will note it anyway. As the translator states in his introduction, his translation is an improvement over previous translations for several reasons, one being the addition of commentaries (including his own commentary), his resort to vernacular English, and his standardization of references to titles, units of measure, and so on (although I think he should have kept "li," and anyway, instead of using feet and inches, why not metric?). More importantly, he also notes that there are a number of passages where he has identified a mistake in previous translations, and provides an example involving king Xuan and a cow being led to slaughter. However, it would have been nice to see notations throughout the text when such moments occur, along with a brief rationale, all in all, like he does with the king Xuan example. Having those notational additions would have really embellished the scholarly value of this edition. But I will reiterate: You're not going to find a better, more accessible English translation, and even if you can read Chinese fluently in a manner that made sense to Mengzi, you probably wouldn't get as much out of the original text as you're provided here. All translations have deficiencies. Knowing those deficiencies only improves the value of the translation.

I purchased this book for a Chinese philosophy class I was taking at Berkeley. This is a wonderful read all by itself, and content is well worth the price paid for the item. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning more about Confucianism and Mengzi in general.

Understanding By Design

From the Inside Flap

What is understanding and how does it differ from knowledge? How can we determine the big ideas worth understanding? Why is understanding an important teaching goal, and how do we know when students have attained it? How can we create a rigorous and engaging curriculum that focuses on understanding and leads to improved student performance in today's high-stakes, standards-based environment? Authors Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe answer these and many other questions in this second edition of Understanding by Design. Drawing on feedback from thousands of educators around the world who have used the UbD framework since its introduction in 1998, the authors have greatly revised and expanded their original work to guide educators across the K-16 spectrum in the design of curriculum, assessment, and instruction. With an improved UbD Template at its core, the book explains the rationale of backward design and explores in greater depth the meaning of such key ideas as essential questions and transfer tasks. Readers will learn why the familiar coverage- and activity-based approaches to curriculum design fall short, and how a focus on the six facets of understanding can enrich student learning. With an expanded array of practical strategies, tools, and examples from all subject areas, the book demonstrates how the research-based principles of Understanding by Design apply to district frameworks as well as to individual units of curriculum. Combining provocative ideas, thoughtful analysis, and tested approaches, this new edition of Understanding by Design offers teacher-designers a clear path to the creation of curriculum that ensures better learning and a more stimulating experience for students and teachers alike.

UbD is a great instructional concept, but it tries to be too much and fails to deliver meaningful quality content for both new and experienced teachers. It almost seems as if Wiggins tries to reinvent what teachers should do but takes two steps back and says "use what fits your needs." The books were supposedly created to be read in any order, but each chapter references other chapters and reuses graphics. Sometimes it appears as if Wiggins is trying to reinvent what was already made: Bloom's Taxonomy and verbs, different forms of formative assessment, and teaching practices that I am already aware of before I read the book. In fact, it was difficult to understand what exactly is UbD until about chapter 5, which could have easily been stated much earlier than saying "it's complicated" and not providing a clear blueprint. The first few chapters seem more like an attempt to sell a concept like a TV commercial.Much of the work consists of visual grids, forms, and graphs that sometimes make the concepts more confusing than helpful. The process of constructing lesson plans is further complicated by using abbreviations that serve little purpose other than to the lesson writer himself. In other words, unless your colleagues also understand your specific design, a UbD lesson plan would not be understood by even a well-trained educator. It attempts to create vague templates with so much room that nothing seems concrete, such as evaluative criteria, objectives, and daily lessons. Don't believe me? Just read the template about a driving lesson, there is no scoring guide next to its "criteria" to show level of performance. GRASPS is nearly the same. Even with the Forms/FAQ, I left more confused than enlighted about some "revolutionary" design concept.Furthermore, there is a danger in overusing the "understanding" method of teaching, especially in lower grades (K-5). There is so much emphasis on higher-level thinking that it suggests taking away assessment of other knowledge in order to obtain "a mile deep and an inch wide" level of understanding. The author wants students to make meaning of their learning in a complex way rather than just recall the material. While I agree that students should learn in a meaningful way, the level of depth can be inappropriate for lower grades in given subjects as suggested, such as math.Summary:UbD can be best described as a way for teachers to organize what they already know how to do while adding a level of complexity to the process. Emphasis on content the teacher already knows. This includes unnecessary labels (AMT, WHERETO, GRASPS, Facets), renaming lesson planning norms (rubrics, big ideas, essential questions, unpacking standards, differentiated instruction), and generic classroom instructional strategies (see table of content in "Classroom instruction that Works"). I bought this for a college class and felt that I got nothing out of this series, not even as a new teacher. While I acknowledge that there are some reviewers who feel that this book has been life-changing, I prefer concrete and specific plans to help me reflect on my practices a year later. UbD is merely a "thinking process" to help one focus on what they intend for their students to learn. It is best suited for upper grades and must heavily be modified to work with elementary students. I may use UbD as a curriculum map, but certainly not for teaching lessons.

This is a useful text for planning lessons or units that follows up the UbD text written by the same authors. It is not a book about philosophy or learning theories. It's only about what principles and questions teachers should take into account when planning. There is no rigid following of a template or guidelines. What are the principles espoused by W & M? That lesson planning should be geared toward "understanding" rather than rote memory, and that it should begin with desired results, then move to assessment techniques, and finally, to the activities. This process is called "backward design." If students "understand," then they may be able to transfer the acquired knowledge to solve problems and make decisions, making learning more meaningful. The authors also discuss the four learning goals - transfer, meaning, knowledge, and skills - and the three stages of learning - acquisition, meaning-making, and transfer. These latter three did not appear on the original UbD.Although the authors discuss many of the ideas covered in the early UbD text, the templates, the dialogues, and the guiding questions make this text an excellent complement to that first text. This is not to mention that this is adaptable to the recently established Common Core Standards. The dialogues were a great way of showing significant differences between mere coverage of content, and meaningful learning. This latter concept is achieved by asking Why am I teaching this to my students? What do I expect students to do with the skill or content? This book is not anti-standards or anti-standardized exams. It is not a critique against any particular public policy although the authors have criticized the excessive number of standards, and policies that encourage teaching by the test (they did so in UbD).On the contrary, this book helps teachers enhance their lesson planning and meet goals established by standards and educational policies in a more effective way, without sacrificing learners' academic development. This is one of the most useful books on lesson planning that I've read so far. It's also an eye-opener as to what education should be about. It avoids getting into fruitless debates about what os the True philosophy or scientific theory about learning. Very practical. I recommend it to any teacher who wants to improve lesson planning in the classroom.

I think the ideas are valid, but it seems the authors are overcomplicating the content and concepts. Everything that needs to be said could be done in half as many pages. It's ridiculously redundant.

Definitely a must have for any educator. Wiggins and McTighe are almost the pioneers in this field and thought of backwards design (Robert Tyler first thought of the concept in his published work from 1947) and their concepts are easy to implement and are what I would call a no-brainer. As in it should be something that all teachers are already implementing in their lesson and unit planning already. However, we all know that it is not already in the forefront of every educators mind or else there would not be a need for this book. This book will definitely teach the educator or potential educator how to start to think about the goals of a lesson and then to plan the lessons on how to get each student to those specific goals (backwards design). It is an easy concept and once understood and fully grasped by the educator he/she can start to educate their students in a way in which the students will benefit by truly gaining meaningful knowledge from the course they are taking with the educator and be able to apply the knowledge and demonstrate understanding.

I had to read this book for a graduate course, and it is, quite possibly, one of the most enlightening education texts I have ever read. I bought the kindle version for the course, but I'm planning on buying the print edition so that I can re-read it, with more notes. It's that good. I wish I had read it years ago, and I have found it's impacted my teaching from chapter one. I'm encouraging my principal to offer it as a book study.

Very cute book for Valentines. Brother Bear gets an Anonymous Valentine before the big hockey game. It turns out that the Goalie on the other team is a girl. We don't know this until the game is over. There is a page of stickers about half way through the book.Yes, this book does mention God and has angel bears with wings, halos, and harps. While it isn't over the top there are some people who have been offended by the slightly religious nature of this book. The Berenstain Bear books are now written by the son, Mike. Stan and Jan died some years ago. This book and others written by Mike are published by ZONDERKidz which publishes Living Lights Berenstain Bear books to "help children learn how God wants them to live everyday." This is the statement on the back of the Valentine Blessings book. If you don't want a religious Berenstain Bears book you need to check to see who published it before you buy.

Honestly, this is just a silly book. The references to the Bible are used out of context. The book is all about a girl having a crush on Brother Bear and Brother Bear being disgusted. And Sister Bear is written as just a starstruck, silly girl with nothing going on but being infatuated by "love." So unless your 4 year old is interested in "crushes" - unless you want to explain to your 2 year old why a brother and sister "sigh" and grumble about showing love and affection to one another - unless you want to elevate Valentine's Day with your preschooler to a day about romantic love vs. a day about sharing fun with friends - DON'T get this book. Truly a disappointment.

You can count on the BB to deliver a nice story with a lesson.

gift

Even though this is almost more like that other valentine book (Comic Valentine) I like knowimg how Mama and Papa first met, and I always like it, when these books come with stickers. I hope they make another valentines day book next year.

We LOVE The Berenstein Bears. This book is a great story along the lines of other books in the series. The pictures are bright and fun, and as always, there is a good life lesson for the kids. My girls (3 and 5) love this one!

Nice learning book. My granddaughter enjoys it!

My kids and I have recently rediscovered many of the Berenstain Bears books. What I really like about them is that they teach the values we try to instill in our kids. I look forward to reading more of these books with my children.

Men We Reaped: A Memoir, by Jesmyn Ward

Review

"Men We Reaped reaffirms Ms. Ward's substantial talent. It's an elegiac book that's rangy at the same time. She thinks back about her brother, and about her old dead friends, and about their nighttime adventures in cars. Then she declares, 'I don't ride with anyone like that anymore.'" - Dwight Garner, New York Times"Jesmyn Ward left her Gulf Coast home for education and experience, but it called her back. It called on her in most painful ways, to mourn. In Men We Reaped, Jesmyn unburies her dead, that they may live again. And through this emotional excavation, she forces us to see the problems of place and race that led these men to their early graves. Full of beauty, love, and dignity, Men We Reaped is a haunting and essential read." - Natasha Trethewey, US Poet Laureate , author of THRALL and NATIVE GUARD, winner of the Pulitizer Prize"An assured yet scarifying memoir by young, supremely gifted novelist [Jesmyn] Ward... With more gumption than many, Ward battled not only the indifferent odds of rural poverty, but also the endless racism of her classmates... A modern rejoinder to Black Like Me, Beloved and other stories of struggle and redemption - beautifully written, if sometimes too sad to bear." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Jesmyn Ward is simply sui generis. I am reminded of Miles Davis' quote: 'Don't play what's there, play what's not here,' after reading her memoirMen We Reaped. This is one might virtuosic, bluesy hymn. Beautiful."- Oscar Hijuelos, author of THOUGHTS WITHOUT CIGARETTES"Jesmyn Ward is an alchemist. She transmutes pain and loss into gold. Men We Reaped illustrates hardships but thankfully, vitally, it's just as clear about the humor, the intelligence, the tenderness, the brilliance of the folks in DeLisle, Mississippi. A community that's usually wiped off the literary map can't be erased when it's in a book this good." - Victor LaValle, author of THE DEVIL IN SILVER"Men We Reaped is a fiercely felt meditation on the value of life that at once reminds us of its infinite worth and indicts us - as a society - for our selective, casual complicity in devaluing it. Ward's account of these losses is founded in a compelling emotional honesty, and graced with moments of stark poetry." - Peter Ho Davies, author of THE WELSH GIRL"Jesmyn Ward returns to the world of her first two books, but here in the mode of non-fiction. A clear-eyed witness to the harrowing stories of 'men we reaped,' she quickens the dead and brings them, vividly alive again. An eloquent, grief-steeped account." - Nicholas Delbanco, author of LASTINGNESS: The Art of Old Age"Jesmyn Ward's memoir is a miracle. In it, she writes with such clarity and beauty that her discoveries and revelations could very well change the way her readers understand the world. She also makes the unbearable nearly bearable with her poetic prose and her life-affirming passion. This is fierce, brave exploration, but it is also art - timeless, universal, and unrelentingly inspired." - Laura Kasischke, author of THE RAISING"This is a beautifully written homage, with a pathos and understanding that come from being a part of the culture described." - Booklist"Jesmyn Ward's heart-wrenching new memoir, Men We Reaped, is a brilliant book about beauty and death. The beauty is in the bodies and the voices of the young men she grew up with in the towns of coastal Mississippi, where a kind of de facto segregation persists." - LA Times"Ward has a soft touch, making these stories heartbreakingly real through vivid portrayal and dialogue." - Publishers WeeklyWinner of the National Book Award, Winner of the ALA Alex Award, Finalist for the NYPL Young Lions Literary Award, Finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Nominee for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. - Salvage the Bones"The novel's hugeness of heart and fierceness of family grip and hold on like [a] pit bull." - O, the Oprah Magazine on Salvage the Bones"Searing.... Despite the brutal world it depicts, Salvage the Bones is a beautiful read. Ward's redolent prose conjures the magic and menace of the southern landscape." - Dallas Morning News"Ward uses fearless, toughly lyrical language to convey this family's close-knit tenderness, the sheer bloody-minded difficulty of rural African American life...You owe it to yourself to read this book." - Library Journal on Salvage the Bones"Salvage the Bones is an engaging novel that, on the surface, seems like a sorrowful tale of a broken household, yet holds beneath it the cherished story of family and loyalty." - The Root"Men We Reaped is an important, and perhaps essential, book, in large part because this accomplished and deservedly lauded novelist somehow summoned the strength to bring us all home with her to the white-hot center of her pain, to the place where that wolf resides." - San Francisco Chronicle"The good news, at least for readers, is that Ward tells a rotten fucking story fucking brilliantly. Her prose is conversational and unadorned. It's deceptively simple, until a moment of wrenching tragedy - or surprisingly often, one of astounding beauty - arrives with dangerous propulsion, knocking you off the foot that had seemed to care." - Willamette Weekly"Ward creates nuanced and loving portraits of African-American men and boys...a must read." - The Dallas Morning News"At a time when many claim America has moved into a post-racial era...Ward uses her family history to reach a personal, yet universal, understanding of the effects that race, class, and gender have had on her life, her community, and her generation." - BUST

Jesmyn Ward is a literary alchemist. She has woven the lives/deaths of 5 young black men, together with her own memories of growing up among them, and applied her skills as a writer to elevate pain, poverty, racism, drugs, alcohol and a lack of meaningful employment for most of her contemporaries, particularly the men - to elevate all these tragic consequences of segregation and slavery - into a kind of universal tragedy, which nevertheless feels redemptive because of the telling of it. And the how of the telling.I spent much of the tail end of this book weeping. For its sadness. For its depth. For the courage to face and write so many painful truths. For the beauty of her prose, the stark honesty in revealing so much of herself, her love and grief for those cut down so young. For the wisdom and strength of black women struggling to raise children under such conditions. For the human wreckage this nation permits. For this woman, rising up to memorialize searing and painful truths.I cannot forget this book. As a writer Ms. Ward is the Hilary Mantel of Mississippi. Someone who has transformed her own personal pain into exquisite prose. Someone fearless in writing about emotions, deeply understanding of her characters, honest yet sympathetic in portraying things which might be unspeakable under most circumstances, but which in her hands become cathartic, almost religious, even when most terrible. She is my new favorite writer. And I’m just sorry that at 73, there are only so many more of her future books I’ll live to read.

I am 70 years old, grew up in a very integrated northern urban community. I thought I knew something about race, but Jesmyn Ward and her memoir proved to me that I knew nothing. Now, I know just a little, and I thank her. If you want to know a little, read this book.

This book was very well written, and I think it's an important and easy to read representation of being poor and Black in the south. I have to be honest, it was really hard for me to read this, it has a lot of tragedy surrounding racism and income inequality has put Black people in Mississippi in a terrible situation, and how difficult it is to get out of. You're probably going to cry, but you're also going to learn a lot about the way people in our own country live, how awful it is, and how important it is that we advocate for change.

I purchased Men We Reaped after a riveting hour-long interview Jesmyn Ward gave to NPR radio stung me with anticipation. The book changed my life.Ward takes you back and forth through time seamlessly, on a journey to uncover meaning behind the deaths of five men in her life. Along the way I played devil's advocate in my head. As the answers begin to appear through the Louisiana fog, I looked for 'holes' in the theory. I found no valid reasons why a critic might dismiss her case. That's just one of the themes. There are others, but simply listing them here in a sentence would be an injustice. Ward weaves them into the memoir using the very personal thread of her own life story. Technically, the writing is a virtuoso; I found myself re-reading paragraphs and wondering, 'How did she just do that?' Emotionally, it is raw electricity.Simply put, everyone needs to read this book. It is too important not to.

This memoir inspires deep empathy and cracks a window onto the experience of rural, black poverty. This isn't a scholarly overview of the problems young black people face, it's an emotional overview that captures and transmits the frustrated hopelessness and grief that crests when Ward loses yet another friend or family member.

This book is why I signed on to Amazon today...to leave a heartfelt, thoughtful review. When I began reading Ms. Ward's book, I mentally said, "I've got to send copies to my family to read." See, I am from Mississippi, the Mississippi Delta. And the poverty, hopelessness, internal and external reminders of your nothingness playing on a loop are all too familiar to me. I left the Mississippi Delta in 1990 for college and law school after that.Through the years, my voice has been stifled by the pain and hopelessness I feel when I watch or hear of the systemic poverty and lack of hope in Mississippi. As a lawyer people often ask me to speak on my childhood, my life after leaving Mississippi, how I feel now when I return to visit my mom, my siblings, my dwindling aunts and uncles. I have never been able to verbalized the anguish, the torment that materializes in my dreams on a monthly basis and culminates with me falling into a black hole thick with sewage.Until now, I hadn't read of a book that gave life to my childhood, to my mom's struggles and triumphs. Until Men We Reaped, I felt alone and stuck in these memories. Thanks be to Ms. Ward for trudging through her memories and giving life to the lifeless men of her family and community. This book is one of the best I've read in a long while, and I read quite a bit. I finished the book this morning, and I am picking it up again next week to highlight some of the lyrically poignant pieces that speak to my soul, the inner child that had to grow up very quickly in order to survive, to thrive. Now I know this book is not only for my Mississippi family. Not only for black folk or poor folk or oppressed folk. This is a book for humanity. For the man who can't seem to find the life that settles warmly around his shoulders. For the moms who struggle to hold it together when all they really want to do is disintegrate from the inside out. For the sons who want to leave a legacy but are too xxxx to break away and fight for their right to exist, be, do. For the daughters, like me, who are, out of necessity, taught to be strong-willed, strongest, strong-bodied, strong-24/7 but who need to be allowed to be weak and wanting and vulnerable and woman.Buy this book. Read this book. You will be different as you devour the final page of Jesmyn Ward's memoir, and it will be a good kind of different.

Digital Signal Processing with Matlab Examples, Volume 3: Model-Based Actions and Sparse Representation (Signals and Communication Technology)

From the Back Cover

This is the third volume in a trilogy on modern Signal Processing. The three books provide a concise exposition of signal processing topics, and a guide to support individual practical exploration based on MATLAB programs. This book includes MATLAB codes to illustrate each of the main steps of the theory, offering a self-contained guide suitable for independent study. The code is embedded in the text, helping readers to put into practice the ideas and methods discussed. The book primarily focuses on filter banks, wavelets, and images. While the Fourier transform is adequate for periodic signals, wavelets are more suitable for other cases, such as short-duration signals: bursts, spikes, tweets, lung sounds, etc. Both Fourier and wavelet transforms decompose signals into components. Further, both are also invertible, so the original signals can be recovered from their components. Compressed sensing has emerged as a promising idea. One of the intended applications is networked devices or sensors, which are now becoming a reality; accordingly, this topic is also addressed. A selection of experiments that demonstrate image denoising applications are also included. In the interest of reader-friendliness, the longer programs have been grouped in an appendix; further, a second appendix on optimization has been added to supplement the content of the last chapter.
