Review

“Laura Mattia tells it like it is!  This enjoyable read is packed with timely, in-depth research, accompanied by vast insights into the gender gap in the financial services industry and what we all can do to improve the situation.  If you work with women in financial services or are considering entering the field, you should read this book. Women, this is required reading!  Men, do yourself and your bottom line a favor and read this book!” (Sheryl Garrett, CFP®, Founder of the Garrett Planning Network)“Sitting down with Laura’s book is like sitting with your own personal career coach, knowledgeable friend, and mentor.  Using her own experiences and those of other women currently in the financial services business, she offers guidance, tips, and common sense to help you become the success you want to be.  A must for all women who are committed to this career, and even those who are just flirting with the idea.” (Deena Katz, CFP, Texas Tech University, USA, Co-Founder Evensky & Katz/Foldes Financial) “This is the right book at the right time, and everyone in financial services should read it. Laura Mattia brilliantly combines data with real-life stories to inspire readers to take action. Her inclusive, realistic approach to addressing the lack of gender diversity in the industry is refreshing. She not only highlights how complex the issues are, but also provides a blueprint for change. If you are a female advisor, a woman considering a career in financial services, or a man who believes in gender parity, this book is for you.” (Kathleen Burns Kingsbury, Wealth Psychology Expert, Author of How to Give Financial Advice to Women) “The barriers to entry for women are now well-established, but the collective action needed to take down these obstacles is harder to mobilize and sustain. In this book Dr. Laura Mattia has stepped up to the challenge by focusing on strategies and actions that can be taken by women themselves―particularly those seeking to become CFP® professionals.  Dr. Mattia empowers women themselves to be the engineers of change within financial planning, rather than waiting for others to make it happen.” (Eleanor Blayney, CFP®, Author of Women’s Worth, former Special Advisor on Gender Diversity to CFP Board Center for Financial Planning)

As someone who runs women's retreats and spiritual healing workshops I am interested in understanding the stress that my female clients experience. The financial world is foreign to me but the messages embedded in the culture are not. I know too well the lack of confidence, self-esteem and sabotaging beliefs that women face, regardless of profession. The exercises that Dr. Mattia employs in this book are very similar to the exercises that I use and they are great for creating a positive mindset, especially to fortify against obstacles. I really like her approach in encouraging women to take control over their career and to positively and consciously plan their steps to success, whatever that means to her. Most importantly she encourages women to choose a path consistent with their values and to focus on achieving those values by using their strengths. Positive psychology teaches us to focus on strengths and it has been shown to increase wellness and success in various different domains. This is a must read book for any woman who is struggling to achieve career well-being and happiness in her profession.

Although its primary audience is women in financial services, Gender on Wall Street provides a comprehensive look at the gender-specific challenges all women face, supported by related studies that support and enhance the author’s observations. For me the book’s real power lies in three helpful features: 1) the many personal stories shared throughout: Mattia’s own experiences, those of women she has mentored or who have confided in her, alongside stories shared by well-known women in public forums. These stories prove that we are not alone, and help us see that new options and opportunities do exist, (2) the valuable Mentor Insights which appear throughout the book, providing ideas on how to think about or handle certain situations; these mentoring moments really get you thinking about how you would address similar circumstances, and (3) the thought-provoking exercises that encourage you to apply what you read. These useful, easy to use tools are great frameworks for self-analysis. The three I found most helpful were Analyzing Your Career Values, Identifying and Utilizing Your Strengths, and Your Strategic Career Plan. Time spent reading this book and completing its exercises is certainly worthwhile, and perhaps even life-changing!

I picked up this book for my daughter, Alexa who just graduated high school and is considering majoring in business or maybe even finance. This book provided a foundation for our career discussions and helped me guide Alexa to decide upon her major and what type of career she would like to pursue. I encouraged Alexa to complete all the exercises at the end of each chapter; from identifying her values, her strengths and her vision to even creating her desired brand message. It was also helpful for us to discuss the challenges women face and how my daughter could avoid them. Ultimately, we are inspired since Alexa feels much more prepared to enter the financial world and thinks she wants to become a financial planner. This book helped my daughter to envision her future and should be a must read for any female considering a career in finance.

This book is one of the most empowering books I’ve ever read on career development. Laura Mattia is not just telling you about her experiences but she gets you to think about your own situation and prompts you to engage in self-reflection by asking invoking questions. I should add that this book is applicable to many career fields, not just finance. It is an excellent read for women who are looking to improve their professional career. There are several things about this book, which make it unique, but I’ll just focus on five. First, Laura writes the book in a way that makes you feel like you know her. Somehow, she is able to establish her authority on the subject while at the same time imparting her wisdom intimately as if she was your more experienced friend, sister, aunt, or mentor. For example, while there are so many positive stories in the book, she's not afraid to bring up some very real issues such as bullying.Second, one of the things that I love about this book is what Mattia calls “Mentor Insights”. They are little nougats of wisdom that are sprinkled throughout the chapter. They are one of my favorite aspects of the book. For example, in chapter 5, she writes, “Your beliefs are the internal building blocks that help you develop your personal power and confidence. They are the single biggest influence on your self-confidence, which is critical for taking personal responsibility for the direction of your own career”. As you go through this book, you’re reading about Laura’s experiences and the experiences of her colleagues but the narrative also allows you to think about your own experiences and anything that you might do to change and take charge of your future. The Mentor Insights is one of the tools that one could use in this thought process. Another cool tool is the group of exercises at the end of each chapter. Normally, I do not like doing self-led book exercises, but Laura makes them engaging. You get the feeling that doing them will help you learn something about yourself and will allow you to improve in the area that the chapter is focusing on.Third, the content of this book is just unmatched because it’s part author’s (and others’) experiences, your own insight (through the exercises), research, psychology, and industry background and history. For example, I love the way this book digs in and explains the value of financial institutions to society and links this to altruism. It explains in great detail the soft parts of a career in financial planning. As someone who works in the financial field, it helps to be reminded of the "feel good" stuff that makes so many of us choose and stay in the profession.Fourth, Laura mentions that one of her many degrees is a bachelors in psychology and it certainly shows through in the book. There are questions and exercises (as mentioned before) that help you to uncover your own opportunities, barriers, challenges, strengths, etc. For example, there is reference to a university website where you can take a quiz to learn more about your strengths for free.Fifth, and finally, I just love the research references. Laura will discuss a topic in the book and will reference some really cool research pieces to back up what she’s saying. As a research and facts buff, I love this aspect of the book. All in all, if you’re looking to grow in your career and could use some advice from a seasoned female professional on how to accomplish your goals and become your best professional self, this book is for you!

This book was fun and easy to read while being insightful and practical. Ihave some new ideas on how to manage my overall life. I am inspired by theidea of establishing goals that I can track because they are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. I also would like to aska couple of friends to create an advocacy circle to establishaccountability and support for each other. I agree that we women are oftenso busy taking care of everyone else that we sometimes forget to takeresponsibility for ourselves and we also don't spend enough time supportingeach other. The exercises at the end of each chapter were very helpful andreally got me thinking about my next steps. I really enjoyed the book!
