The scholarship and volume of information regarding each era is extraordinary. My only issue with this is that you need a dictionary (print or digital) to follow some of the vocabulary and the author can get repetitious at times, or drift off in "PhD- land". With these caveats in mind, this is an exceptional piece of scholarship that has enlightened this reader regarding many aspects of the history that I have never encountered in my 70 years. Big thank you to Mr Goodman.
An excellent review of Judaism--not of Jews or Jewish History told as events. This is a much needed intelligent telling of the development of theological thought and practice. Should be read and in the library of all those interested in the topic, It is extremely well researched, highly informative and well written. Easily recommended!
I have not found a better book on the subject. Martin Goodman's expertise is a gift to anyone wanting to understand Judaism, from 'in the beginning' to eschatology.

Very interesting to just pick up and read anywhere the book opens up. Great writing with tremendous detail. Should be on everyone’s bookshelf.
This is a classic. In clear concise writing Mr Goodman gives a wonderful job of telling the history of Judaism. From the Temple time to the rabbinic teaching all is discussed in interesting prose. Well worth the purchase price!
