On a visit to Venice, de Blasi meets a local bank manager who falls in love with her at first sight. After "the stranger" (as she coyly calls him throughout the book) pursues her back to her home in St. Louis, Mo., she agrees to return to Italy and marry him, leaving behind her grown children and her job as chef and partner in a cafe. Although the banker, Fernando, lives in a bunkerlike postwar condominium on the Lido rather than the Venetian palazzo of her dreams, and some of his European ideas about women clash with her American temperament, the relationship works. She survives his criticism of her housekeeping and his displeasure at her insistence on remaining a serious cook (in modern Italy "No one bakes bread or dolci or makes pasta at home," he tells her), and they marry. Then one day Fernando surprises her by announcing that he is quitting his job at the bank where he has worked for 26 years. They leave Venice, he espouses her interest in food and they now direct gastronomic tours of Tuscany and Umbria. De Blasi's breathless descriptions of her improbable love affair can be cloying, but she makes up for these excesses with her enchanting accounts of Venice, especially of the markets at the Rialto. She conjures up vivid images of produce "so sumptuously laid as to be awaiting Caravaggio" and picturesque scenes of the vendors, such as the egg lady who keeps her hens under her table, collects the eggs as soon as they are laid and wraps each one in newspaper, "twisting both ends so that the confection looks like a rustic prize for a child's party." In a final section entitled "Food for a Stranger," de Blasi (Regional Foods of Northern Italy) includes recipes for a few of the dishes with which she charmed the stranger. I had higher hopes for this book. Its not a 'bad' book, but it was a book where like other people have said, I just could not connect with the characters. I couldn't finish it which is a rarity for me. I found the fact that she married a man she didn't know at all, except for meeting two times before, then moving to Venice a bit hard to grasp - but hey it happened and it's been successful for her, which is wonderful. He quits his job, just like that, to move to Tuscany and I dont know.. I just could not engage myself in this book. It plodded along. I've been to Venice though so I did like the descriptions of Venice life although some of her descriptions of the Venice women, particularly on the beach were not flattering. (she calls it a circle of hell, I wanted to remind her YOU moved to THEIR culture so don't put them down). Maybe it was the writing style that lost me? I can't really place it but I lost interest in the book and skimmed the last half of it.
A quick, but delightful read. The author has a wonderfully romantic story to tell, of falling in love with a man AND a city, and she has a fresh and expressive way of telling it. She describes the give and take of a relationship saying, "…there are seasons in the life of a couple that function, I think, a little like a night watch. One stands guard, often for a long time, providing the serenity in which the other can work at something. Usually that something is sinewy and full of spines. One goes inside the dark place while the other one stays outside, holding up the moon." The book is filled with gems such as this. I am looking forward to reading her next book and now I am itching to return to Venice.
A quasi love story of two people from very different worlds who meet "later in life" and make a life together in Venice. Story reads more like a travelogue than a romantic tale. If you are interested in learning more about life, traditions, food, wines and customs of Venice, then you will be busy taking notes. However, if you are interested in romance, don't think this is the book for you! Italian male lead in this story was painted almost secondary with little focus on him...almost painted as mysterious. Now reading "A Thousand Days in Tuscany" which picks up the story where left off in Venice; but only because I hope the travelogue details are offered once again. I am most interested in travel to Tuscany and look forward to gaining local insights. Forget the romantic aspect...just wasn't included in Venice book.
Hmmmm where to begin with the review...I read the cover jacket and I had to read this novel, after all who doesn't want to hear the details of a genuine love story with the setting being Venice Italy - unless you lack a pulse you will want to know the details of the romance the jacket noted. Sadly, the book was more a travel/food writing than it was a love story. Don't get me wrong Ms. de Blasi did a wonderful job painting the picturesque city of Venice and its people and culture, Ms. de Blasi even included some scrumptious recipes. I felt the author failed to touch upon the romance, after all this is a memoir of a love story. The author spent more time and detail explaining Venice and food she skipped over the love of her life. The book felt emotionally void for me, I want more details of what she was feeling and how she fell in love. Ms. de Blasi is a food journalist and it is apparent in this novel by her continued description of Venice's culinary offerings. The style is terribly descriptive (food wise, not so much in the romantic department), almost too descriptive and it seems flowery at times but...she left a enough of the story where I am wondering if the follow up novel would provide more details into the actual love story. I will add, the differences between the couple was touched upon, after all they are strangers that don't know each other and they decide to merge their worlds - you know there is going to be some potholes in their world but again, the love aspect was flat and I was wanting more details.If you're looking for a book to read at the beach or on a plane this is for you. I had high expectations for this book and I was disappointed.
An account of the author's days as a resident in Venice. She gives up her house, business, and life in the United States to marry a Venetian whom she hardly knows (She refers to him as "the stranger" throughout the book). She does not know but a few words and phrases in Italian, and her husband doesn't know English. This and the cultural differences cause a few conflicts which they both have to iron out. The book was interesting and held my attention. The author does a very good job of describing the city and it's islands, the many Venetians she comes to know and love, her impressions of Italian men, favorite restaurants and bars, food and drink, a little history and art, and she does it all with some humor thrown in. A must read before a sojourn in Venice. It is the first in a series. She has also written books on her experiences in Tuscany and Sicily.
A marvelous tale that is laced with wonderful cooking recipes and romance. It is a tale one finds almost hard to believe: a lady leaving her established life in middle age moving to Venice and marrying a man she calls the stranger. It is a tale of the possible; where love and hardwork create a wonderful life and good marriage. Above all, the story takes place in the city of Venice! What better location to combine love, foodand dreams! At the conclusion the reader may wish to make this move him or herself! I must admit, moving to Venice with my wife seemed agreat idea!
By the time I finished the book, I felt as if I'd read a series of letters from a friend, reminding me of the Venice I loved on two visits. I recalled the flirting I did, and wondered "what if?". I had walked the entire length of the city from Piazza San Marco to the railway station, and the author reminded me of many of those spots. Along with the author, I heard the water lapping as she walked along the canal, and smelled the fish frying from the osterie, and browsed through the goods at the markets by the Rialto. She wrote in prose poems, a valentine to a city of dreams. And her recipes made me hungry! I'm glad I already bought more of her books.
