What if you could live your life over again, but without the benefit of being Bill Murray? That's the dilemma that Jeff Winston winds up facing here. When we first meet him he's in his mid-forties, stuck in a job that he doesn't seem to find as fulfilling as he used to and his marriage isn't so much unraveling as ossifying, old arguments turning into a very solid resentment that will probably last for the rest of their lives. Jeff is primed for a mid-life crisis of sorts, but instead of getting a hot young girlfriend or a new car, he gets something entirely different: a massive fatal heart attack. And that's how we start.But as you can probably tell since the book is called "Replay" and not "All the Bad Decisions I Don't Remember Making Eventually Haunt Me", Grimwood isn't so much interested in how we get here as much as what happens afterwards. And in this case, Jeff dies and wakes up . . . in 1963, with the body of his eighteen year old self and all the memories of his life from that point until he dies in the late eighties. At a loss for what to do, Jeff does what anyone else would probably do in the same situation: massively bet on the outcomes of future sports events to secure himself vast amounts of wealth and set himself up for a comfortable existence (if nothing else, this teaches me to pay more attention to who wins the World Series, as you really never know when it might come in handy) then making shrewd investments in companies that he knows will do well in the future. All is going swell, he's living his life almost exactly as he's envisioned it.Then he reaches the eighties and dies again. Thus a slight snag in the plan appears.And so it goes for this latter day Billy Pilgrim, who isn't so much unstuck in time as ricocheting back and forth like a rubber ball in the middle of two metronomes. Beyond the concept, which apparently did influence "Groundhog Day", Grimwood takes a deceptively simple writing style (I managed to polish the whole book off in about three hours max) and proceeds to milk the basic idea for all its worth. He applies a realistic filter to Jeff's first time through the merry-go-round, having him do all the things that most normal people would do in the same situation (including trying to change history . . . with unexpectedly interesting results) but by forcing him to repeat all that all over again (and again) he gives up an opportunity to keep revisiting the same scenario but with new wrinkles added each and every time. He attempts to rectify mistakes he made in his original life, tries to shake a sense of loss for what he left behind in previous run-throughs, all the while operating with the knowledge of the one thing that most of us will never know for certain: when he's going to die and how. He's not even sure if he'll come back each time but his constant struggle to both avoid his fate and try something different with his life each time makes for oddly engaging reading, as Grimwood keeps recreating the same scenarios but weighed with Jeff's knowledge of all his past lives layered on top of him, a burden he can't quite embrace nor escape.And yet Grimwood keeps making it interesting, like a wheel running over the same track again, working the groove deeper and deeper. On one of his go-rounds, Jeff comes to realize he isn't the only one reliving his life repeatedly and that wrinkle of two people trapped in overlapping loops of the same cycle, falling in love and losing each other and having to figure out how to find each other again, greatly opens up the possibilities of the book. He varies the repetition just enough so that you notice the differences more than the similarities, managing to simultaneously convey the joy of having your whole life ahead of you again, the drudgery of having to plod through the boring parts once more (I didn't mind high school and college at the time but the thought of having to go through and study for all those classes again with my old and shriveled late thirties mind is terrifying on some level) and the anxiety that comes when knowing exactly how much time you have only means that you're more aware than anyone else how absurdly little it really is. For Jeff and the woman who becomes his companion its like riding a treadmill tilted downward and coated in oil, you can fight as hard as you want to stay upright and stay on the belt but eventually you're going to fall away back to the start again.The fact that any of this succeeds is due to Grimwood's ability to give us forward momentum even when the plot is literally doubling back on itself. His imagination for the different scenarios is fantastic enough, like dropping the same actors into the same framework for a play over and over again and watching them improvise a different result based on what's gone before. He manages to keep the feel of it realistic by focusing on the characters themselves and how they react to something, both in their despairs and how they make it work (and for contrast he throws in a third person apparently experiencing the same phenomenon, whose reaction to it makes their wackiest moments seem like utter pillars of rationality), whether its buying stocks, betting on horse races, or making movies. What he doesn't do, and which I sorely appreciate, is make the focus on the book the characters' quests for the ultimate "why" this is all happening. Different explanations are floated and the reader can probably come up with their own theories, whether time itself is broken, or its aliens running an experiment or even some test from a higher power, but the characters quickly realize, as much as the reader probably will, that the explanation isn't the point. Knowing the why doesn't tell you anything beyond maybe that God as a weird sense of humor. Ultimately the characters are too busy living to worry about that and that's where the meat of the book lies, in the second and third chances that we all want but never get, the changes we make within ourselves with the weight of experience, the tragedy of loss and the joy of reconnecting and the grim certainty that even if you had all the time in the world, it would still be too little (something hammered home later when it becomes clear the intervals between dying and being reborn are becoming shorter and shorter).There's a line in one of my favorite Robert Frost poems that goes "I'd like to get away from Earth awhile/and come back to it and begin over" and here Grimwood makes us ask ourselves, what would we do if we had to do it all over again? Is fixing your mistakes (or what you perceive to be mistakes) the point? Is it the opportunity to try new things, to see if all those paths we never took would actually lead us somewhere better? Or is it simply worth the chance to revel in the day to day progression once more and not worry whether we get it right the whole time. Jeff ends the novel in nearly the exact place he began it, and yet it would be difficult to suggest he's the same person. Still, were his opportunities any better or more open than ours? You don't have to feel trapped to want to make a change and you don't need a freak spasm of time to give you an excuse. In a sense, we have it better than Jeff does for a good chunk of the book. Forced to go over the same temporal ground repeatedly, he has to make the most of limited tools and see his progress, for good or ill, erased. But for us, every day forward gives a chance to move away from where we were and push ahead to a horizon that might reside where we need to be. Within the borders of our years, we are boundless, perhaps more than we realize.

It is perhaps unfair to use "Groundhog Day" as a point of reference when discussing this book since the novel preceded the film by several years. Still, as a cultural touchstone, it is perhaps relevant. Jeff Winston ends up cycling back, not one day, but from his mid-forties to his late teens, or in terms of years, 1988 to 1963. Having 25 years to live over gives rise to a lot of opportunities to make money - from betting on the Kentucky Derby to buying the right stocks - and Jeff immediately takes advantage of this in his first (and subsequent) loops. What is less obvious is how new decisions can affect the future - his own and the world's.Author Grimwood cycles Jeff back into his own life, so that the changes he's made from cycle-to-cycle are not "saved" in the timeline. Thus, each time he's returned to the past, Kennedy can be assassinated again, he is dating the same girl, etc. How each of these iterations plays out, based on his choices and the consequences of actions in the various loops, forms the plot. To discuss it further would cause spoilers, but more importantly remove from the process of discovery that the reader and the character(s) are going on, to the detriment of the reader's enjoyment. After all, we know what's going to happen: Jeff dies in 1988 and is regenerated to replay his adult life. It's not the destination but the journey that makes the novel worth reading.And it is worth reading - this is perhaps the fastest I've finished a novel in several years. After a bit of a slow start, and once the surrounding cast is fleshed out (themselves not repeating but coming into and out of Jeff's life), you can't put the book down. Will Linda (his first wife) appear in this iteration? What happens to Judy, the college sweetheart? The poignant moments are when decisions are made that ultimately cause him to be a stranger to someone with whom he was intimate in a previous iteration, and all the loss that implies.The book is not science fiction - no attempt is made to physically explain Jeff's repeating (although he himself worries about it). There is no "Groundhog Day" requirement that Jeff grow as a person in order to escape the time loop. Rather, it is more a meditation, perhaps an "adventure", on how decisions lead to branching realities that can be either good or bad. Grimwood's writing makes it all very intriguing and grips you right to the end.

First read this in 1990 so it's nice to see that people are still commenting to this day on what, for me, is still one of my all-time favorites. At age 60 I still think about this novel and have to ask, "would someone please FINALLY give this story the cinematic version it deserves"?And why, oh why, did Ken Grimwood have to die at such a young age? The idea that he was working on a sequel at the time of his death and that we will never see it has tortured me for years. I hope he's enjoying his own Replaying.If you're up for an extremely similar (some might say totally derivative) story try The Unusual Second Life of Thomas Weaver---not nearly the impact of Replay but a simple, enjoyable read.

I love this book and was excited to update to the latest edition. But, I do not like the "loose leaf" version. I want a book that is already bound, especially for this price!

This is a thin book and an easy read. I may have misinterpreted the title. I was expecting it to be more of a "How to" create a home meditation space. Instead of a "Why to". The "How to" only takes up a couple of paragraphs, where to set it up, what to include, etc.The bulk of the book is Thich Nhat Hanh explaining why to set up a home mediation practice, very well written and interesting. He includes a lot of short 2 and 3 line poems and thoughts that are worth the price of the book alone.

I love this book. It helped me to create a dedicated space for meditation in my tiny home. I didn't think I could find a permanent space to meditate, but with the encouragement and wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh, I created a little sanctuary for my spiritual practice. Before reading this book, I would meditate anywhere in the house. It was very random, and my practice was very random. Just having the space, invites me to sit consistently. It made me see all of my home as breathing space, and to nurture myself, family, and visitors, with a sense of serenity and welcome. I have already read the book twice and will reread it for years to come. There are a lot of pearls to be mined.

I was expecting a guide to interior decorating (or lack there of) to engage in mindfulness. But looking back on the title it's pretty obvious that it would transcend decorations. There was a lot of focus on poems and breathing practices. There was advice on decorating but he leaves it up to the reader.What I really enjoyed is that it was a practical guide to meditation. It's a quick read and worth coming back to. I also enjoyed the illustrations.I'm giving it four stars because I didn't understand some of the conflicting advice in the book. At one point you're supposed to "shut the windows of the senses" but then you're supposed to ring bells, burn incense, look at nature/relatives, eat food. It just seemed conflicting but it did make me think that you could shut senses down by using one thing to focus on...Anyway the book is worth reading if you're experienced in meditation or not.

Small book. It isn't what I expected. This is tips for meditating and a few small meditations. I was looking for something more along the lines of how to create a great meditation space.

Excellent overview of how and why to establish a home meditation practice. The book covers how to create a physical space and how to create a mental space, as well as how to integrate meditation into your every day life. It includes short poems to recite while engaged in various activities throughout the day in order to become more mindful.

This little book is helpful in reminding me of how I must make a little nook that is my space to meditate. I can't always make it to meditation class and it is nice to have a spot set aside for only me and my practice. Sometimes meditation is difficult to do at home but give yourself this gift. It is well worth it.

A gorgeous little pocket or booklet. I keep next to my bed and re read regularly. It is very beautiful and poetic and provides lots of small meditation mantras and messages.

Meh, not the best book on creating space, some of the tips are a bit out there in regards to the cake in the fridge thing. Hard to take this book seriously, some of the mantras are a bit over the top with their metaphysical feel....IMO

Josey..........I don't know you but I love you !! I am making my breads along with your book .......each chapter is a new bread and it builds on the chapter before it .........I made the first loaf of bread and it was gone in two meals.........my husband LOVED it ........Sunday we are doing the wheat bread to go along with our dinner.. and I am making some flavored butter to go along with it too.......I will buy every book that Josey puts out.......this is a great book especially for beginners......he gets you on the right track and before long you are just flying to the next loaf of bread and a new level of baking!Take my advice, buy this book and any others that he puts out you cannot go wrong.

I started baking bread a few years ago employing the techniques of Artisan Bread in 5-Minutes. While that got me started, I remained somewhat intimidated by the whole process, especially recipes requiring sponge, sourdough starters or preferment, as Josey utilizes in his method. I approached this book with trepidation, a little overwhelmed by all the info and easy flow of options, but I have to say I was thrilled with the result. This bread has an excellent crust, flavor and crumb and slices beautifully for toast...something my previous loaves didn't. I'm sold...so much so I sent my sons to The Mill last time they were in SF in order to bring me a loaf. Sadly (for me) but happily (for Josey) he was getting married that weekend and no loaves available. Not to be deterred, they brought me a piece of cinnamon raisin (brown sugar and butter) toast. Awesome! Thanks to Josey for taking the time to write this book and to share his enthusiastic love of baking. I was intrigued by his journey and I am again inspired. I also like that he offers recipes for many types of grains, such as kamut. I haven't dealt with the metric measurements but have had no problems thus far by following the standard measuring method. I may even start a bread journal. If you buy this book, enjoy your bread making journey!

This book is flat out amazing. Fun, not pretentious, and empowering for the wannabe home bread maker looking to get started. And yes, for the one reviewer who gave it 1 star (there's always gotta be one it seems) it is -NOT- a book for experts. This is made pretty clear by the description " first true entry-level bread-baking cookbook" and also the intro. However, after a few loaves, you really will be creating some high quality, artisan type bread. My co-workers were amazed when I showed up one day with Cinnamon Raisin, Sesame, and Olive loaves (see pic) after only a couple of weeks of owning this book. Josey clearly put a lot of thought into recipes that totally work, but this book also encourages you to experiment in your baking and not worry about the occasional failure. One tip: don't wait too long before trying the 'raddest homemade pizza' recipes! They are now a tradition in our house, and a great way to use up those CSA veggies before they go bad! Great job Mr. Baker, I hope you put out another book someday.

So...I was spending the night at my baby sister's house in NOPA. In the morning, she says "we're going to walk down the street for lattes and cinnamon toast". Where we ended up was The Mill, where we had some amazing $4 toast and great coffee! I saw the book on the shelf, but passed and bought a loaf of Country Bread. Later I sampled this book on Kindle, ended up buying it, and started reading. My awesome niece bought me the hardcover, it's a beautiful book indeed...Now about the contents - it's a very well written book. I feel as if Josey is right there explaining in layman' terms what to do, what to look for, and so on. The first part of the book is broken into "lessons" and takes you from simple one-step yeast bread to pre-ferment...then to Sourdough.Ah yes, sourdough. As a lifelong Bay Area resident, as well as a Laura Ingalls Wilder fan, I've had a fascination with sourdough, but never attempted it - Laura and Ma Ingalls made it sound easy enough in "By the Shores of Silver Lake", but "The Little House Cookbook" said "Laura makes beginning a starter sound very easy, but it is not." That pretty much turned me off of even attempting it...until this book. Guess what?!? Josey and Laura are right - it IS easy. Just keep feeding it.I've delighted friends and family with my new bread making passion...bread isn't exactly on my bodybuilder diet, but fortunately it's not difficult to give away the results - I've gifted to friends, family, and brought crusty loaves when volunteering with my church.I'm attaching a photo of my whole-wheat cinnamon raisin bread that I baked last night.Thank you Josey Baker for a wonderful book!

A great relaxing read, with enough mysteries to keep me turning then pages between pauses to reflect on my own relationships. I will recommend this book to my friends.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I think everyone has a story or two to tell about a Mother in Law that they either have or know of. Lucy is married to Ollie and tries so hard to bond with Diana who is Ollie’s mum, but everything she does gives her the impression that she is not good enough or she doesn’t approve of her.Nettie is Diana’s daughter who is married to Patrick and desperate to have a baby, the lengths she will go to are bordering on obsessional.Diana is married to Tom and they are fortunate to have an extremely comfortable life with a successful business, living in a well to do area in a large home, and more money that the average person would ever see in a lifetime. Diana’s life has not always been like this though, as she was cast out from her home as a pregnant teenager. As she did it tough when she was young, she is determined to teach her two children that life wasn’t meant to be easy and don’t come asking for handouts.But then Diana is found dead at home. Was it suicide, or was it murder, and who would do such a thing? You will have to read this book to find out!This book had me turning the pages from start to finish. It was told in alternating time periods from the perspective of Diana, Lucy & Nettie. Sally’s writing keeps getting more intriguing with every book – just when you thought you had it worked out, another twist came, and I had not picked the conclusion at all. 5 very big stars from me.

A thought-provoking, emotionally-charged, insightful look into the breakdown and unravelling of a family.Lucy has always had a complicated relationship with her mother-in-law, Diana. When, Diana is found dead, evidence points to her having taken her own life. But, when the autopsy reveals she was suffocated, every member of Diana's family is a suspect – including Lucy.The mother-in-law/daughter-in-law dynamic between Diana and Lucy held a particular fascination for me. In Lucy’s case a combination of her past emotional turmoil and preconceived notions led her to make a snap judgement from the moment she met Diana. From that point on Lucy interpreted her every interaction with her mother-in-law as negative and pointed. Diana’s seemingly detached, apathetic, and indifferent personality did nothing to alter Lucy’s opinion and was further compounded by the fact that Diana’s husband, Tom, was warm, opening, and generous. In Diana’s POV it quickly became apparent that she’s not as cold and unsympathetic as she seems – rather she’s reserved, doesn’t like to be noticed or complimented, and is embarrassed over Lucy ‘s continuous attempts to try and impress her.Diana’s views on motherhood and her relationship with her adult children (Ollie and Nettie) also made this an interesting read. Her firm belief that adults should stand on their own two feet, and that hardship builds character, caused them to feel hurt and upset. It also made her somewhat of a hypocritical given the size and luxury of her own house, the flash car she drove, her expensive tastes, as well as her summer house at the beach.This was certainly a novel chock full of misunderstanding, jumping to conclusions, jealously and resentment. If only this family had of opened up to one another, and communicated more, things could’ve turned out very differently. I even choked up a couple of times after coming to this realisation, because that's how invested in these characters lives I was. There’s a current trend in domestic noir to make the mother-in-law, nasty, controlling and even psychotic. As much as I enjoy that trope, I liked how these characters weren’t so black-and-white. They were certainly flawed and damaged, but realistic and relatable. Who killed Diana, and why, was an explosive surprise that I didn't see coming. At one point I worried things were heading in a predictable direction, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The last couple of chapters were a little rushed, and over-the-top, but overall a satisfying wrap-up.This was a quick, easy-to-follow read, with short chapters told in dual POV (Lucy and Diana), using the present/past format. My first novel by Sally Hepworth was a thoroughly enjoyable experience that I recommend to all. I predict the mix of drama, contemporary, women's fiction, and crime/mystery will have wide appeal. And it wasn’t like she couldn’t afford it.The Mother-in-Law by Aussie author Sally Hepworth is an intense, gritty psychological thriller which I thoroughly enjoyed. Told by Diana and Lucy, and in the “past” and “present day”, it melded well and felt seamless. Plenty of twists, lots of red herrings and the trauma of relationships fed this book well. Highly recommended.

There are not many books that have me enjoying every single moment, but this is one of them. It was so hard having to put this book down and do my housework or go to sleep but I had to force myself to. I was hooked from the beginning and did not want it to end.Sally has written a page turning story, that you are not going to put down so free up your time and don’t start it just before bed.The Mother-in-Law is indeed suspenseful, thought-provoking, perceptive look into the relationships of a family. The story was told from both Lucy and Diana’s points-of-view through past and present events. This book will keep you guessing throughout and then questioning yourself as more is revealed.I do not want to ruin this story for you as you are going to want to enjoy every minute of it for yourself. Sally has created some exceptional characters and the plot is executed to perfection!!! It is not all black and white….I will definitely recommend this one!!! It is a top read of 2019!!!

This is a gorgeous recipe book, and it is great to look through. The personal stories are touching and the photographs are amazing. I think it’s tough to follow Cravings, which was such a surprise hit. These recipes are fine, but there was just something more appealing about the recipes in the first book. They felt more authentic.This book feels a bit forced, and a lot less like these are recipes you could see Chrissy making in her kitchen and more like the recipes people expect her to make in her kitchen because she has grown and matured since Cravings was released.Overall it is a good selection of recipes. But I wouldn’t consider it a must have for every cook’s collection of recipe books.

I love Chrissy and her first cook book so much. The first one was more authentic and the recipes were more appealing. This time, it feels like she is trying to be funny, and the recipes are just "alright" and nothing special. The photos and quality of the book are really good and there are some decent recipes, but slightly disappointed.

I'm a huge fan of the first book, I actually made quite a few of the recipes, and I'm not much of a cook. They were all delicious.While I haven't cooked much from the second book, there are many recipes I'm eager to try. I even bought a waffle iron to make the Parmesean waffle breakfast. I like that the recipes are ever-so-slightly more ... health conscious? It's still the same food you crave to eat, but there are a few more vegetarian-ish selections. I was going to say the soup chapter is the only dud for me, but I realized there is even a recipe there I want to try.I should mention that on top of it all, the author still has the same humorous, friendly tone of voice that makes simply reading this enjoyable.

I loooooove Chrissy's cooking. She is incredibly talented at creating foods that are out of this world. Her first book is a kitchen must have. This second book is also very good, but it has some recipes thrown in there that seem odd and unnecessary (nachos and hobo dinner??). Such a creative writer and chef, I just personally dont care for simple recipes that make it into cookbooks, they seem like page fillers.

This is a great book and Chrissy is an awesome recipe creator. Off the top of my head, I’ve made the clam chowder, garlic soy ribs, banana bread, and coconut chicken. I had actually been meaning to make clam chowder for a while, and prior to buying the book, I saw the recipe on an Instagram photo and pathetically zoomed in and made it. No regrets.I’ve only tried a handful of recipes, and they all turned out very well, but our absolute favorite is the coconut chicken and the delicious dipping sauce. I could eat that sauce for breakfast! The banana bread was great. The clam chowder will be my go-to recipe; the clam juice addition made it taste fresh and cut the heaviness. The garlic soy ribs were good.The OG Cravings was such a success that it’s impossible to follow. When you’re making a cookbook, especially your first, you want to put all of your best recipes in there (at least, I’d imagine). I feel like the OG Cravings is a more classic, authentic cookbook that is absolutely a kitchen must-have. I found the first cookbook more creative and motivating. I feel like there are a lot more steak, fish, and hard-to-find and/or expensive ingredients in here. The recipes may be a bit more sophisticated in general. However, paired with those recipes are some recipes that seem a bit like filler. Two nachos recipes, multiple grilled cheese recipes...you get the point.Back to the positive: I like this cookbook and I’m sure every recipe I make will be delicious. It’s still exciting and creative. It still has food you want to eat in it. I’m excited for more Thai Mom recipes and happy with the amount of sweet potato recipes! I use this book more than I’ve used 99% of my others and everything has turned out well, so five stars from me!

I’ve made a few recipes from this cookbook, and I’ve really liked all of the ones I’ve tried! I really loved her first cookbook, and she definitely didn’t disappoint with this one, either!

She is my favorite keep it real celebrity out there! Her book is amazing! She looks great and is so amazing doing this postpartum ❤ My babies will love their fluffy corndogs now! And like my 2 year old says "Snacks, on Snacks, on Snacks!!"

I have always been a picky eater, but when I ordered the first Cravings book, I was pleasantly surprised by how many dishes I was willing to try. As soon as I saw the second book was going to be released, I knew I had to purchase. The recipes in this book check all the right boxes for me: comfort + flavor coupled with Chrissy's sense of humor. The pictures are vibrant and the recipes go into great detail for those who may not know their way around a kitchen. My only question is when is book #3 coming out??!!
